How to lose a billion dollars: Semtech agrees to sell its cellular IoT module business to Compal for $62 million in cash. Semtech paid $1.2 billion in 2023 for Sierra Wireless. It’s not clear if the sale to Compal includes the connectivity business too but I’d guess not. But that only accounts for about a quarter of the revenue of the old Sierra Wireless business. By my reckoning, the cellular hardware business generated revenue of $262 million in the year to January 2026, based on the latest annual report saying hardware revenue was up $34m on previous year (when it was $228 million). That growth bucked the trend in recent years. So that’s a 0.24x revenue multiplier. The connectivity business is around USD91 million based on the above, which tracks a bit down from previous years. The world of vehicle rental, leasing and sharing is changing, driven by connectivity and automation. Vehicle rental, leasing and sharing have traditionally involved a series of manual processes between the end of one customer's journey and the start of the next. Once a vehicle was returned, rental operators needed to record mileage and fuel levels, inspect the vehicle, assess whether maintenance or cleaning was required, update the rental agreement and prepare the vehicle for its next customer. At busy rental locations, particularly airports, these activities could create operational delays and keep vehicles out of service for longer than necessary. The growing use of connected vehicles, telematics, IoT technologies and automated data platforms is changing this process. Instead of relying entirely on employees to physically check and record vehicle information, rental and mobility operators can increasingly receive data remotely and automatically. Fuel level, mileage, vehicle location, return time and other vehicle information can be transmitted directly to the operator's systems, helping accelerate vehicle returns, reduce manual intervention and improve fleet utilisation. Wireless Logic has been on the acquisition trail again, this time through its Brazil subsidiary Arqia, which has picked up the IoT connectivity business of Algar, comprising the customer base, the platform and its go-to-market capabilities. The two businesses will operate independently until the transaction is completed, at which point the Algar connections will be migrated to Arqia. Algar had 4.2 million IoT connections at the end of June 2026, which (by my reckoning) a bit more than doubles Arqia's base in Brazil and pushes the overall Wireless Logic installed base of connections up by about 20%. The appeal of the Brazil market is impossible to ignore. According to Transforma Insights' IoT Forecast Database, in 2025 it was the fifth biggest cellular IoT market in the world by value, accounting for over half of the Latin America market by both revenue and cellular connections metrics.
