The UK is becoming a faster, more predictable, and higher-performing environment for global commercial research investment. A year on from the launch of the government’s landmark Life Sciences Sector Plan, we have transformed the research landscape.
📅 Central to this progress, figures show the average time to set up a commercial interventional clinical trial has fallen from 169 days to 122 days - with further reductions still being made.
⏩ This marks major progress on the commitment to get UK clinical trials up and running within 150 days, dismantling unnecessary bureaucracy to bring innovative treatments to patients faster.
🌍 Complementing this success, in the last year we have delivered 31 global firsts and 69 European firsts in England - a key indicator of our ability to deliver at pace and scale.
We’re making the UK a globally leading destination for clinical trials, delivering life-changing benefits for patients and their families while driving growth across the life sciences sector, attracting international investment and supporting regional economies.
“A year ago, this government set out the ambition to make the UK a world-leading destination for life sciences, and we have delivered on it.
“By backing the new NIHR Industry Hub, we’ve cut clinical trial setup times from 169 to 122 days - smashing our own 150-day target. This is creating the predictable, fast-paced environment that international investors demand, and it has already secured more than £3 billion in private investment this year alone - helping families across the country get access to life-saving treatments months sooner than they would have done just a year ago.
“We are determined to go further. By strengthening our NHS' world-class research infrastructure, we are ensuring that brilliant discoveries move from the lab to the patient's bedside as quickly as possible.” - Preet Kaur Gill, Health Innovation and Safety Minister in the Department of Health and Social Care
