Early Stage Biotech Investing: ITS NOT SEXY AND ITS HARD. I've led o2h Ventures, investing into pre-seed and seed stage biotech, for almost a decade now, and I've got the scars to prove it. VC sounded glamorous when I started my career at PA Consulting. Here are some truths from my experience. This industry could do with a more honest conversation. It's harder than it looks: • Everything takes longer than planned. • It's not glamorous or sexy when you're constantly filling the gaps, at every hour of the day and night, whether it's finance, biz dev, signposting, or psychotherapist! • Very hard without government-backed capital. A real barrier for first-time funds. • You carry the weight of investing other people's money. It weighs on you more than investing your own. • EIS/SEIS makes a lot of sense as a structure. But it takes time to attract capital and build the track record that makes people trust it. But would I still point the next generation toward this path? • You get to evaluate huge amounts of science, and AI has sharpened my edge here: I can dig into a topic properly now, kicking the tyres on costs, business models and the science itself. • Incubation is attractive on paper. Finding the entrepreneur you can actually build with is a different matter. Get it right, and it's fulfilling in a way that's hard to describe, watching your children go to university type fulfilling. • A fair few portfolio companies are genuinely well placed: EXONATE LIMITED, Oxford Drug Design, Atelerix Ltd., Sentinel Oncology Limited, Tay Therapeutics Ltd, Cortirio, Heartfelt Technologies Ltd, CamGene Therapeutics, Metrion Biosciences, and many more across our 40+ companies. • I used to think it was all about the science. At early stage there's often very little data, so it's really all about the team. And you always have to pivot. Every single time. I still love it! We built something different early on: an engine o2h discovery that supports companies, not just writes cheques. Curie.Bio and Flagship Pioneering are doing this in the US now too. We've had this model a while. Feels like our time, from the UK. The mission now is to get some of our drugs to patients. That's the real reason we do this.

After a long career in the drug discovery space, both from a CRO and ventures perspective, we've often started working with biotechs from a twinkle in the eye of an academic or first pre-seed funding, and a lot of those collaborators and investee companies are now moving into, or already in the clinic (Yes it takes a long time and yes i am that old 😃) . I've recently spent time looking at the India landscape for clinical trials, visiting hospitals and Clinical Research Groups, which pulled me into a deeper dive on the translational space more broadly. It reminds me of something I heard maybe 10 years ago: pharma R&D leaders talking about real human tissue becoming central to drug discovery. I wonder if we're actually starting to get there. There's a lot of discussion about NAMs (New Approach Methodologies) since the FDA's roadmap to reduce animal testing. One area that's caught my attention: ex vivo precision-cut tissue slices, kidney and lung especially. These slices keep real human tissue architecture intact — a much better read on human response than a 2D assay or organoid. Liver slices are fairly well established; most larger CROs offer them. Kidney and lung are where the gap sits, from what we've seen across our portfolio: a thin provider landscape, mostly specialist European CROs built for large pharma budgets. For a small biotech wanting to screen a real compound set, the economics don't work. My own read is still forming: could these eventually replace some animal studies rather than just bridge to them? Full replacement feels like a stretch given systemic PK and toxicity limits, but for narrower questions — fibrosis efficacy, local tissue toxicity — substitution looks more plausible. FibroFind was acquired by a PE firm this year, for an undisclosed amount, specifically to scale capacity. Keen to hear what others think?
