  • Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and more intense across the UK, and we’ve seen the effects firsthand over the past couple of months. The impacts go far beyond uncomfortable temperatures, affecting wildlife, ecosystems, and people across the country. Extreme heat can put pressure on our health, water supplies, agriculture and infrastructure, while prolonged dry weather puts additional stress on our natural environment. For wildlife, the impact can be particularly significant. Drying habitats, reduced water availability and stressed vegetation can make it harder for species to find the food, shelter and water they need. This is why GreenTheUK is focused on practical action at a local level. By protecting and improving our habitats, parks and green spaces we can create places that work better for both people and wildlife - while helping our communities become more resilient to a changing climate. We're proud to celebrate the continued partnership between GreenTheUK and SISK Group. Alongside GreenTheUK and Royal Forestry Society, Sisk has now planted 10,000 trees across UK woodlands and we're delighted that Sisk has committed to planting another 10,000 trees in 2026-27. This year's commitment has helped restore and strengthen woodlands across North Yorkshire, Northumberland, County Durham, Devon and Rhondda Cynon Taf, creating more resilient forests through greater tree diversity, supporting native wildlife, improving habitats for species including red squirrels and woodland butterflies and helping ancient and commercial woodlands adapt to future climate and disease challenges. A huge thank you to the team at Sisk for their continued commitment. We can't wait to see what we'll achieve together over the next 10,000 trees. #TreePlanting #NatureRecovery #Biodiversity #Sustainability #ClimateAction #Partnerships #Sisk #RFS #GreenTheUK

🌱 We’re delighted to highlight the positive impact of our partnership with Rose Uniacke, which has supported the planting of 11,200 climate-resilient trees across the UK during the 2025-26 planting season. As part of their commitment to plant 100,000 trees, 44,000 have already been planted, including the 11,200 delivered through our partnership, with the remaining 56,000 scheduled for planting.🌳 This initiative is helping to establish healthier, more resilient woodlands that can adapt to the challenges of a changing climate, while providing vital habitats for wildlife and supporting biodiversity. By carefully selecting tree species suited to future conditions, these new woodlands are designed to thrive for generations, strengthening ecosystems and contributing to the long-term restoration of the UK’s natural landscapes. A huge thank you to Rose Uniacke for your commitment to protecting and restoring nature. 💚 Case study here: https://buff.ly/eaqygTf #Biodiversity #TreePlanting #ClimateAction #Sustainability #CorporateResponsibility #NatureRecovery #GreenTheUK

  • Almost three-quarters of England is now in drought. Following England’s driest July on record and a dry start to August, 71.3% of the country is now experiencing drought conditions, affecting around 45 million people. The impacts are being felt across the country. River flows and reservoir levels are falling, farmers are facing increasing pressure, and important wetland and peatland habitats are drying out. Wildlife is also being affected, with rising water temperatures putting further pressure on freshwater ecosystems. This is not an isolated event. England has now experienced three droughts in the past five years: 2022, 2025 and 2026. As droughts and heatwaves become more frequent, improving the health and resilience of our natural environment is increasingly important. Healthy wetlands can hold and slow water within landscapes. Diverse, resilient woodlands support healthier soils and water cycles. Trees in our towns and cities provide shade and help reduce temperatures locally. At GreenTheUK, we see the value of investing in local nature recovery. From planting climate-resilient trees to restoring wildflower-rich habitats, businesses can support practical projects that create space for wildlife and help build healthier, more resilient ecosystems. There is no single solution to the challenges posed by a changing climate. Restoring and protecting nature is, however, an important part of building resilience for the future. If your business would like to support tangible wildlife projects local to you, get in touch with our team at seeds@greentheuk.com 🌿 #Drought #NatureRecovery #Biodiversity #ClimateResilience #HabitatRestoration #NatureBasedSolutions #GreenTheUK

  • Earlier this month marked a remarkable milestone for UK nature recovery, as white storks returned to the Midlands for the first time in more than 600 years. Three juvenile birds were welcomed to Willington Wetlands in Derbyshire, where they will form the foundation of a new breeding population as part of an ambitious long-term species recovery programme. The birds have been released into a specially designed soft-release enclosure, allowing them to gradually adapt to their new surroundings while receiving expert care and monitoring. This carefully managed approach gives the young storks time to become familiar with the landscape before they begin exploring independently, improving their chances of survival and encouraging them to return to the site to breed in the future. The return of this iconic species is about far more than one bird. White storks depend on healthy wetlands rich in amphibians, insects and other wildlife, making them an important indicator of thriving ecosystems. The project is the result of years of habitat restoration, scientific planning and collaboration between conservation organisations, demonstrating how species reintroductions, when paired with high-quality habitat creation and long-term monitoring, can help rebuild biodiversity and restore natural ecological processes. Here is to hoping these storks are the first of many that will call the Midlands home once again. #Wins4Wildlife #NatureRecovery #Biodiversity #Conservation #Rewilding #WhiteStorks #Wetlands #GreenTheUK

  • Meet the quagga mussel. You may not have heard of it, but this small freshwater mussel is becoming a growing concern for rivers, lakes and reservoirs across the UK. Quagga mussels are not native to Britain. They originate from the Black Sea region and have spread across Europe and into the UK largely through human activity, such as contaminated boats, equipment and water transfers. Once introduced, they can spread rapidly and are extremely difficult to remove. These mussels can cause serious problems for freshwater ecosystems. They are highly efficient filter feeders, removing plankton from the water that native species rely on for food. This can disrupt entire food chains, affecting fish, birds and invertebrates. Quagga mussels also form dense colonies that smother native species and clog pipes, pumps and water infrastructure, leading to costly damage and maintenance. Another major concern is their impact on water quality and habitats. By altering nutrient levels and increasing water clarity, quagga mussels can encourage excessive plant growth, including algae blooms, changing the natural balance of lakes and reservoirs. Their sharp shells can also litter shorelines, creating hazards for people and wildlife alike. Efforts are underway to monitor the spread of quagga mussels and prevent their introduction to new waterways. Public awareness, strict biosecurity measures and cleaning of boats and equipment are essential to slowing their spread, as eradication once established is nearly impossible. Protecting Britain’s aquatic habitats depends on early action and collective responsibility. Want to get involved in helping protect our natural environments? Last week at Walthamstow Wetlands, a team from LMAX Group joined us for a Wild Work Day to support one of London’s most important reservoir sites, led by London Wildlife Trust. After a short briefing, the team got straight to work, clearing dense brambles and Norfolk reeds to create safe, open spaces for bird ringing. This work directly supports conservation efforts by enabling vital monitoring of migration patterns and population health. In just a few hours, the team made a tangible difference to the site, improving conditions for both wildlife and ongoing research. The day finished with a guided tour of the wetlands, offering a chance to see the real impact of their efforts in one of London’s most unique natural spaces. Thank you to LMAX for playing a direct role in protecting and supporting UK biodiversity. #WildWorkDays #Conservation #Biodiversity #Sustainability #CorporateVolunteering #WalthamstowWetlands #NatureRecovery #EnvironmentalImpact #LMAX #LondonWildlifeTrust #GreenTheUK
