Workplace health and wellbeing have been policy and business priorities for years. Yet productivity losses linked to ill-health continue to grow, economic inactivity remains a 'quiet but urgent crisis', and support for employees remains inconsistent. Most workplaces have wellbeing policies. Fewer have cultures where employees feel safe using them. 🔍BSI and Cebr's new research shows that the gap between the two is where productivity is won or lost. When employees believe support is available and feel confident to raise an issue, the outcomes change significantly. Shorter absences, lower presenteeism and better talent retention. The research is consistent across physical health, psychological health, neurodiversity and menstrual and menopausal health. In every case, confidence to approach an employer shapes outcomes for both the individual and the organization. However, workplace provisions only work when employees know they exist, trust that using them is safe, and have a manager equipped to respond. Workplace wellbeing research tends to focus on prevalence - how many employees are affected and by what. BSI's new report, 'The Value of Creating a Culture of Trust', takes a different starting point. It was designed to answer two questions. Does confidence in approaching an employer about a health challenge reduce the productivity loss associated with it? And what is that gap worth in monetary terms? Across the UK, more than one in five working age adults are economically inactive, and more than half of workplace absence links to mental ill health. 🔎Our latest research shows that when employees feel less confident approaching their employer about mental health or wellbeing challenges, productivity losses increase. That loss shows up through longer absences, higher presenteeism and greater risk of leaving work altogether. Confidence shapes behaviour. It influences whether people speak up early, access support and stay productive when challenges arise. Yet many employees still report limited or no workplace support, particularly for psychological health. That gap allows issues to escalate and productivity losses to deepen.
