James Dacombe is one of those rare people who genuinely has the potential to change the course of science, running two generational companies OLIX and CoMind, aged 25. Thanks for having us on board both and for all the insights you share. Everyone knows semiconductor components (memory and silicon) are hard to come by and hence priced up, but nobody has a viable solution.. other than OLIX, which transfers data using an optical network between its chip clusters. The bottleneck in AI isn't the model anymore. It's the hardware underneath it. James Dacombe and the OLIX team have just raised a $312m Series B to solve that - building the infrastructure for frontier AI. Rather than pushing a single chip to do everything, OLIX is building specialised silicon and an optical network to connect it - unrolling models across racks the way an assembly line works. A genuinely different approach to the industry's supply chain constraints, built on components that are actually available at scale. We backed James early, investing at the seed round in 2025. FOUNDING FLAG PLANTERS - July Edition 🫐 Once you've synthesised a valuable molecule (an enzyme or a protein for example), it doesn't come out clean. It's mixed in with everything else used to make it, and you have to extract and purify it before it's usable. This step is called "downstream separations," or recovery. Do it fast and you usually lose purity. Do it perfectly and it's slow and expensive. Most companies are stuck picking one. That matters because every bio-manufactured product - from enzymes to recombinant proteins - lives or dies on this step. Get it wrong and your economics break. Get it right and you unlock an industry. This is where Blake Byrne and Christian Schuster come in. Blake was a biotech analyst who jumped to industrial biotech, with a top dissertation score from University of Cambridge Graduate School. Christian is a trained biotechnologist with a PhD in novel membranes for protein separations and a PostDoc in functional materials. They spent years studying the problem. Now they're solving it. Introducing Magnify. A platform that pulls out and purifies these molecules continuously, at world-scale volumes, and works across pretty much any protein you throw at it. It gets you speed and purity, without the usual trade-off. Enzymes in food and detergent, recombinant dairy, collagen, chemicals - anywhere biotech needs to separate the good stuff from the rest, at scale. Why did we invest in Magnify? The global market for high-volume bio-manufactured products will exceed $200 billion by 2040. Ultimately, we invested because these founders have seen what others miss: the infrastructure gap hiding in plain sight. Blake brings analytical rigour.
