The most successful places bring together people, nature and the built environment. Factors such as temperature, sunlight, airflow and comfort have a significant influence on how people experience a space, even when they're not consciously aware of them. Through sensory design, our specialists help clients better understand these human experiences and use them to inform design decisions that create more comfortable, resilient and inclusive places. Cities around the world have embraced the idea of the sponge city. Yet implementing sponge city measures at scale remains a challenge. Drawing on perspectives from clients and collaborators at DC Water, Earth Finance and Xylem, our latest Insights piece explores four barriers that continue to slow progress: - Delivering interventions in complex urban environments - Creating funding models that reflect shared value - Demonstrating measurable outcomes - Aligning stakeholders around a common vision The future of sponge cities will depend on more than green infrastructure alone. It requires integrated systems that combine infrastructure, technology, governance and communities. #WeAreArup

Engineering the spectacular glass façade of Brisbane’s Glasshouse Theatre. Collaborating with Blight Rayner Architecture in partnership with Snøhetta and Lendlease, we provided multidisciplinary engineering on the new theatre project for the Department of Housing and Public Works. The theatre fills the city corner block, and to maximise interior space its foyers cantilever seven metres over the streets. This design required careful engineering and an intricate understanding of how materials move together and respond over time. The steel foyer structure suspends four storeys of rippling glass façade, supported by a tapered post-tensioned concrete transfer slab. To ensure the cantilever wouldn’t move during the glass installation, we pre-loaded the roof with weights and monitored installation with regular surveys to control cantilever movement. The recently completed TP-Link LXD campus in Shenzhen is reimagining the workplace. Featuring prominently along the development's exterior is a one-kilometer ‘landscape ribbon’ that connects offices, amenities, recreation spaces, and outdoor terraces across three interconnected towers. The result is a highly collaborative, campus-like environment that encourages movement and connection throughout the building. Our structural engineering teams in New York City and Shenzhen helped bring this vision to life, working with KPF, through an integrated engineering approach that balances design ambition, constructability, and efficiency. As workplaces continue to evolve, projects like TP-Link LXD illustrate how thoughtful engineering and multidisciplinary design can create healthier, more connected environments for people. The draft legacy plan for the Victoria Park Precinct has been released, outlining a vision for one of Brisbane’s most significant city-shaping projects. As lead masterplanner, we’re proud to have helped shape a precinct that will bring together world-class sport, recreation, events and green and public space in the heart of the city. Accelerated by the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the precinct is intended to create a vibrant destination where people can gather, play and connect. With around two-thirds of Victoria Park remaining green and public space, the vision is to create lasting benefits for the community long after the Games. “High-quality open space plays a vital role in creating healthy, inclusive and vibrant cities. This is once in a generation opportunity to define what Brisbane's future looks like and create a legacy that extends well beyond 2032 by enhancing connectivity, celebrating open space, and delivering enduring value for all Queenslanders.” – Penny Hall, Project Director. Drawing on our global experience helping cities maximise the long-term legacy of major events, combined with our deep understanding of Brisbane, we’re proud to be helping shape a vision that will benefit generations to come. Singapore's National Stadium was designed around a simple vision to create a world-class sport and leisure hub that the whole city could call its own. As stadium designers, we shaped a 55,000-seat venue beneath the world's largest free-spanning dome, air-cooled and built to flex between football, rugby, cricket, athletics and major national events. The relationship with the city was central to the design from the outset. When the roof extends, Singapore's skyline comes into full view with the stadium opening up to the waterfront, letting the noise of the crowd carry out over the water to the heart of Singapore. That quality of connection, between sport, community and place, was made possible by a single integrated team of architects, engineers, acousticians, lighting designers and sports specialists, working together toward one shared vision. A striking centrepiece to The Kallang, a 35-hectare sports and recreation district, the award-winning National Stadium is a lasting example of what design can achieve when sporting ambition and civic purpose are treated as one. #WeAreArup

Bringing timber, steel and concrete together into a single, coherent workplace structure. The BRITA Group Campus in Germany is a series of interconnected buildings designed to support an internationally renowned drinking water solutions company. We provided a multidisciplinary team across all design stages, developing a competition-winning structural concept that brings together an in situ concrete basement and ground floor with a timber-concrete composite superstructure. Bringing together three different structural materials required close collaboration to achieve an elegant architectural vision. The project demonstrates how our structural engineering expertise, developed across projects globally, can be applied to local materials, sustainability goals and architectural ambition. Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense across the globe, affecting the way we live, work and experience our buildings. Understanding how heat affects people and places is an important part of building resilience to a changing climate. Drawing on expertise in building physics, Becci Taylor shares practical ways to stay comfortable during hot weather, from reducing heat gain to making the most of fans and ventilation. What really works when it comes to staying cool during a heatwave? Read Becci's BBC interview for practical advice and expert insight here: https://bbc.in/4bcbESW #ClimateAdaptation #Heatwave #WeareArup

We are proud that the Marlinja Community Microgrid Project, delivered in collaboration with Original Power and Marlinja Cooperative, received the First Nations Engagement and Participation Award at the 2026 Clean Energy Council Awards. The award recognises leadership in partnering with First Nations communities on clean energy initiatives and creating opportunities for genuine participation in the energy transition. Energy insecurity remains a significant challenge for many First Nations communities in Australia. In remote areas, unreliable power supply, high energy costs and household disconnections can have a profound impact on health, education, food security and community wellbeing. To help address this challenge, Original Power, a First Nations not-for-profit renewable energy developer, partnered with the Marlinja community in the Northern Territory to develop Australia’s first 100% Aboriginal-owned, grid-connected solar microgrid. Through an innovative benefit-sharing arrangement that credits households for the energy generated, the project has significantly reduced household disconnections and delivered broader community benefits. Through our Community Engagement portfolio, we provided pro bono support to help the community make the most of the microgrid’s energy, improving home comfort and further reducing energy bills. We worked with residents to identify practical improvements, including replacing inefficient air conditioning systems and appliances, and improving insulation and shading. We also developed a Community Energy Guide to help residents better understand and optimise their energy use, reducing costs while maximising the benefits of the microgrid. This project demonstrates how community-led energy solutions can deliver lasting social, cultural, economic and environmental benefits by enabling First Nations communities to shape their own energy future. Congratulations to Original Power, the Marlinja community and everyone involved in this important project. What if movement through a workplace could spark connection, creativity and wellbeing? At TP-LINK LXD in Shenzhen, the campus is shaped around a continuous ‘ribbon’ – an elevated, landscaped pathway linking three towers and creating a shared experience across the workplace. Bringing this idea to life meant solving a complex structural challenge. We developed a cantilevered system to carry both people and planting, carefully balancing performance, buildability and long-term adaptability while preserving the architectural intent, designed by KPF. Within the buildings, open, column-free floorplates and generous ceiling heights provide large spaces. This enables the flexibility modern tech teams need, supporting collaboration while allowing the workspace to evolve over time. The result is a connected workplace for TP-Link that goes beyond efficiency, creating an environment where people can connect, recharge and do their best work.
