Participants can now begin preparing and validating their generated answers. To assist with this, we’ve also provided some strong baseline models (retrieval -> rerank and retrieval -> rerank -> generate), which has shown promising results with a modified prompt.
Retrieval baselines for AG (Augmented Generation) tasks can be found here. More instructions of these can be found here.

For those working with AG (Augmented Generation) and RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) tasks, a validator script has been included in the Ragnarök repository. This script will help verify that your generated answers meet the submission criteria. Make sure to carefully review the warning and error logs generated during the validation process to avoid common pitfalls such as sentence drops, duplicate citations, etc.

We encourage participants to start preparing soon as the deadline is August 17th AOE. Detailed instructions for generating and validating submissions can be found in Ragnarök.

Participating teams will receive both the MS MARCO V2.1 document & segment collection and a list of topic descriptions.
For each topic, participants have the choice to participate in either all or any of three tasks following last year’s format. For the Retrieval Track (R), participating systems would provide a ranked list of segment IDs retrieved from the MS MARCO V2.1 segment collection. Next, for tracks with Augmented Generation (AG & RAG), participating systems would generate an answer description (containing upto a maximum of 400 words) broken into individual sentences with citations from the MS MARCO V2.1 segment collection.

Participate in our RAG Track by registering for TREC at this website.

Tasks Overview

Retrieval Task (R)

The retrieval task as the name suggets is an ad-hoc information retrieval task similar to the previous TREC Deep Learning Track. Participating systems will receive a list of topics and the MS MARCO V2.1 segment collection. For each topic, the system needs to return the TREC runfile containing the ranked list containing the top 100 relevant segment IDs from the collection. The topics provided will be non-factoid 2-3 sentence long description and require long-form answer generation.

The “R” track emulates the previous year’s TREC R task and TREC-DL 2022/2023 tracks is for the IR audience, however, the main difference lies in using document chunks from the MS MARCO V2.1 segment collection instead of the MS MARCO v2.0 passage collection.

Augmented Generation Task (AG)

The Augmented Generation task emulates the modern-day RAG task to return the summarized answer ground based on the information available in the pre-determined list of top-k segments provided to the participant. Participating systems will receive a list of topics, MS MARCO V2.1 segment collection and the ranked list of the top-k relevant segments for each individual topic. The topics provided will be non-factoid and require long-form answer generation.

The AG track is for the NLP audience, focused on the generation output and quality. We provide the top-k retrieved segments, which allows the participants to focus on the answer generation quality, by grounding on the set of chunks of segments, and generate an informative & summarized answer.

To assist with this, we’ve also provided some strong baseline models (retrieval -> rerank and retrieval -> rerank -> generate), including the latest from Cohere’s Command R Plus model, which has shown promising results with a modified prompt. More instructions of these can be found here.

For those working with AG (Answer Generation) and RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) tasks, a validator script has been included in the Ragnarök repository. This script will help verify that your generated answers meet the submission criteria. Make sure to carefully review the warning and error logs generated during the validation process to avoid common pitfalls such as sentence drops, duplicate citations, etc.

Submissions are now open in evalbase, and we encourage participants to start submitting soon as the deadline is August 25th AOE.
An Overview of the TREC 2024 RAG Evaluation Procedure

This year at the TREC 2024 Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) Track, we plan to follow the evaluation pipeline in Figure 1. The top half of the workflow focuses on constructing “ground truth” information nuggets, whereas the bottom half focuses on evaluating systems’ answers based on the information nuggets. Below is an overview of each step of the pipeline:

Stage 1: Relevance Assessment

Topic Selection and Creation: The process begins with collecting responses from participants submitted to the Retrieval (R) and the Augmented-Generation (AG/RAG) tracks. The segments (or document chunks) and RAG answers provided by all the participants will be used for creating the pools for assessment, based on submission priority and availability of assessors.

Relevance Assessment (Automatic): The next step involves assessing the relevance of the pooled segments concerning the input topic (query). As the first step, we utilize various relevance estimators based on UMBRELA [1] and beyond to assess the relevance scores of each topic-segment pair. We construct the “Auto Qrels” after completing our automatic relevance assessment.

Relevance Assessment (Manual): After the automatic scoring, an additional manual assessment using human annotators is performed to refine the assigned relevance scores. We construct the “Post-Edited Qrels” which will be used for the Retrieval (R) task evaluation.

[1] Upadhyay et al. “UMBRELA: UMbrela is the (Open-Source Reproduction of the) Bing RELevance Assessor.” https://arxiv.org/abs/2406.06519.

Stage 2: Nugget Curation

Nugget Creation (Automatic): Using the relevant pooled segments for each input topic, an automatic nugget creation (or nuggetization) process leveraging LLMs to generate multiple few-word to sentence-long nuggets containing factual information relevant to the input topic. The “Auto Nuggets” list is constructed for every topic selected. These nuggets will be grounded in the corpus and span all crucial facts that an RAG answer should cover. These “Auto Nuggets” also include a binary score of vitality (‘okay’ or ‘vital’).

Nuggets Revisions (Manual): The “Auto Nuggets” list is provided to the annotators for further refinement. The annotator will cover each nugget in the list and determine its relevance to the input topic. The annotators can delete, edit, or even add new human-generated nuggets to the nugget list. After the revision round, we construct a “Post-Edited Nuggets” list which will be used for nugget-based evaluation of the AG/RAG tracks.

Stage 3: Support, Fluency & Nugget Assessment

RAG/AG Answers: After successfully generating the information nuggets and lists of relevant documents, we evaluate each participant’s RAG/AG answers using three independent evaluation metrics: (i) Support, (ii) Fluency, and (iii) Nugget assignment. Each RAG answer is broken into sentences with each sentence containing citations to retrieved segments.

Support Assessment (Automatic): The support assessment evaluates every sentence mentioned in the answer. Every sentence is first evaluated automatically using an LLM for providing any specific information requiring a citation, or if the sentence is a generic sentence requiring no citation. Next, for sentences containing citations, each sentence is evaluated for how well it is supported by its associated cited segments. We categorize support on a scale of 0-2: no, partial, or full support.

Support Assessment (Manual): The support assessment identical to the automatic stage is evaluated using a human assessor. Every sentence is judged using a human annotator to check whether the sentence requires a citation or not. Further, for sentences requiring citation, we ask each annotator to judge whether each sentence present within the RAG answer contributes no, partial, or full support for its associated cited segments.

Fluency Assessment (Automatic): The fluency assessment evaluates whether each RAG answer is fluent and cohesive. We automatically compute fluency by using the input topic and the complete RAG answer, where the LLM will score fluency.

Nugget Assessment (Automatic): The automatic nugget assessment evaluates the complete RAG response and checks for how many nuggets from the list are present within the answer. Note that we use an LLM for evaluation, not heuristic metrics like BLEU which compute the word overlap. The automatic nugget assessment computes an assignment score akin to that described in support assessment, where the nugget is either not supported by the answer, partially supported, or fully supported.

Nugget Assessment (Manual): The manual nugget assessment is a process identical to the automatic nugget assessment. We ask the assessor to manually assess how well each nugget in the Post-Edited Nuggets list is covered within the RAG answer.

Stage X: And everything else under the sun

While the above stages will likely be what we are constrained to with NIST assessors in the loop, we would like to also evaluate other aspects of RAG answers. This could be hallucination rates, contradictions across answer sentences, pairwise evaluation, etc. Anything else you’d like to see? Reach out!

Version 1.0.
Participating teams will receive both the MS MARCO V2.1 document & segment collection and a list of topic descriptions.
For each topic, participants have the choice to participate in either all or any of three tasks introduced this RAG this year.

Test topics will be released by August 11, 2024 & submit your participating runs by August 25, 2024 (AOE)!

Assessment & Evaluation

Evaluation of the participating systems will involve four metrics: Nugget evaluation, Support evaluation, Fluency evaluation & Retrieval evaluation. All cited segments provided by the partcipants will be added to the relevance assessment pools for each individual topic. After the first round of LLM-generated relevance assessments with post-curation from NIST assessors, the LLM-generated nugget list for nugget evaluation with post-curation from NIST assessors. Finally, we assign scores based on nugget recall and precision and other factors involving LLM-assisted support evaluation (grouding based on referenced segments) and LLM-assisted fluency evaluation (grammar and coherence) of the RAG response with post-curation from NIST assessors. The detailed process for assessment will be outlined soon.

Tasks Overview

Retrieval Task (R)

The retrieval task as the name suggets is an ad-hoc information retrieval task similar to the previous TREC Deep Learning Track. Participating systems will receive a list of topics and the MS MARCO V2.1 segment collection. For each topic, the system needs to return the TREC runfile containing the ranked list containing the top 20 relevant segment IDs from the collection. The topics provided will be non-factoid and require long-form answer generation.

The “R” track emulates the previous TREC-DL 2022/2023 tracks is for the IR audience, however, the main difference lies in using document chunks from the MS MARCO V2.1 segment collection instead of the MS MARCO v2.0 passage collection.

Elizabeth Pantley, author of The No-Cry Potty Training Solution, explained in an excerpt on Child Development Info that most toddlers pee four to eight times per day. On top of that, toddlers have one or two bowel movements a day. But every toddler is an individual. Some will go more often than that, and others will last a couple days without having a bowel movement at all. In terms of actually getting your toddler to the potty, Pantley suggested setting up a potty routine. Potty first thing in the morning, after eating, and before other activities, like riding in the car or going to sleep. Of course, you can adapt this routine to your lifestyle, and you still must be on the lookout for signs your toddler has to go ahead of schedule.",

Additionally, it's unwise to begin potty training unless your child is truly ready. Take this potty training readiness quiz featured in Parents before you begin.
