I felt his heat at my back and a voice whispered over the shell of my ear, “Ms. Lawyer, a word?” I didn’t even have to look up now. I knew that voice anywhere, I shivered as the sound shot straight through my body. I shot an apologetic look at my client and turned to follow Luke out of the courtroom.

He was in uniform again today and he was so authoritative on duty it captivated me. Just the click of his black dress shoes on the courtroom floor did it for me. It made me think of how commanding he would be in bed making my core clench in response. I resisted the urge to fan myself with my file as I followed him. The state’s attorney at my internship in college told me to avoid all police officers, because they were cocky womanizers or cheaters. Something like that. I couldn’t seem to heed her warning now that I had the attention of one. It was merely his professional attention, but I was starting to crave more.

“Yes?” I asked, crossing my arms in front of my chest hugging the file to hide my attraction to him. He drew himself up to his full height, placed his hands on his duty belt, and went into full cop mode. I tried not to look directly into his eyes, which tended to draw me closer into his sphere.

“I’m here for the heroin case at Washington College. This case yours?” He asked as he handed a police report to me.

I took a look down at it, happy to have something else to concentrate on. “Oh yeah, the janitor who picked up a newspaper while he was cleaning.”

“A newspaper which was wrapped around a bag of heroin,” he said.

My eyes narrowed at that, “He works at a college, Luke. He was just doing his job, cleaning up after those kids. College kids do drugs. He picked up garbage, which contained abandoned drugs. It’s hardly a crime. From a defense standpoint, there’s reasonable doubt.”

Luke dropped the final nail in the coffin, “He was high when we arrested him.”

I snorted, “Of course he was.” Well that sucked. I thought I had a pretty strong argument for reasonable doubt. I hadn’t seen an official field sobriety test in the report but there probably wouldn’t be unless he was driving. “So you’re here just to brighten my morning, Luke?”

“I have to say Emma, it is not a chore to stand here and spar with you this morning,” he said as his eyes traveled from my pumps to my skirt.

It definitely felt like he was undressing me with his eyes. I was wearing a black skirt suit with four inch black pumps, which still only brought me up to his shoulders. Nothing that should be evoking the heat I saw in his eyes.

“Those heels make your legs look amazing,” he said softly. When his eyes traveled back to my face, his gaze captured mine and the intensity of it pulled me closer to his body. There was no question that Luke felt the same attraction for me that I felt for him.

Then his voice lost the intimate tone as a bailiff walked out of the court room slamming the door behind him and continued walking down the hall, breaking the mood. “I still don’t understand how you’re a defense attorney. A sweet girl like you? I could see you as a state’s attorney. I could get behind you holding a badge, that’s crazy hot. But why a public defender?”

 

 

 

About the Author:

Lea Coll worked for over ten years as a trial attorney in both civil and criminal law. She earned a J.D. from University of Baltimore School of Law where she was production editor on Law Review. Throughout the course of her legal career she wrote opinions for judges and various legal memoranda, briefs, and motions for a Fortune 500 Company. After years of legal writing, she enjoys the freedom that comes with writing fiction. Now that she stays home with her children she survives by plotting stories while fetching snacks and running back and forth to their activities.

Her experience in court influenced the legal drama in her book. She has an interest in the history and charm of small towns which is why she chose Chestertown on Maryland’s Eastern Shore for the setting of her first series.

Lea grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania and currently resides in Maryland with her husband and three children.

Luke Hudson leaned against his patrol car, which was parked in front of my Corolla. His head was bent over a little black book as he scribbled something. I had a moment of panic when I saw him rip off the paper and tuck it under my windshield wipers. I glanced around for a parking sign to see if I had parked there for too long. I jogged the last few steps to Luke and placed my hand on his arm, feeling a little spark of electricity, I pulled my hand back in surprise. Something intense flared in his eyes as he turned his attention to me. “Sorry, am I not supposed to park here?” I asked, nervously licking my suddenly dry lips. “It’s only four-hour parking,” Luke answered tipping his head towards the parking sign in front of his vehicle. I cringed when I saw the sign, “I’m sorry, I didn’t even see that. I don’t use the car much either.” Everything in Chestertown was within walking distance. “There’s a lot behind the courthouse you can use for extended parking if you want,” Luke offered, helpfully pointing in the direction of lawyers’ row. Next to the courthouse, there was a line of one-story attached buildings housing one law firm after another. At the end of the street, I could see a lot. “Okay, thanks,” I pulled the parking ticket off of my window. I knew there was nothing I could say to get out of the ticket now that he had written it. I didn’t read it because Luke stared down at me with eyes piercing right through me. His presence was overwhelming. Luke looked at the Inn, “Are you staying here?” “Yes, just temporarily,” I answered. “Do you need some help to find a place?” “Oh no, Ashley from work referred me to Samantha. She has an apartment over the bakery,” I explained pointing in the direction of the bakery and suddenly feeling stupid. Surely he knew there was an available apartment above the bakery. It was a small town, after all. “Okay, good. Let me know if you need any help with anything since you’re new to town.” He placed a hand on my shoulder and turned to go. His brief touch caused an involuntary shiver through my body. I was used to doing things for myself and not relying on anyone, but I liked his concern. Luke was already walking towards his vehicle and pulling open the door when I called after him, “Thank you for the offer though.” I gave him a small smile. He nodded and his lips twitched with the beginning of a smile. He nodded at the paper I still clutched in my hands, “Don’t forget to take care of that.” Then he got into his car and pulled out into the street. I watched him go and then I glanced down at the paper, which I had forgotten about until he mentioned it. I open the folded paper which looked like a parking ticket on the back, but instead of my information written out on the front of the ticket, there was a hand drawn picture.

He thinks I’m funny. And exasperating. And bossy. And beautiful, he said that I was beautiful.

It’s not the worst start in the history of starts, but I’d like to know more.

I pull out a stool and sit down at the island countertop so I can watch Vince work. It occurs to me once again what a shit wife I am. I don’t cook. I don’t give blow jobs. I haven’t asked if he needs anything dropped off at the dry cleaner. I don’t wear sexy lingerie. Maybe I should change? To be fair, the blow job thing is not my fault. I did offer that first night. I meant to yesterday, but he distracted me with his tongue and that was that. Gah, I’m just the worst.

“What are you thinking about?”

“Giving you a blow job.”

“Yeah?” Vince responds easily, as if we’re talking about where the cutting board is. “Do you have a list of specific requirements for how you’d want that to happen?”

So he’s open to the idea, is what I’m hearing. Maybe he’ll want to date after the annulment and he’ll fall in love with me? It’ll make a great story for our grandchildren.

“You say that like I’m demanding.”

“You are.”

“I’m extremely easy-going! Everyone says so!” No one says that, actually. But it’s probably just because it’s never come up. It’s not as if I go around asking people if they think I’m easy-going, but if I did, they’d say yes. Probably. At least everyone except Vince would.

“You have a very easy-going way of getting your own way,” Vince states as he sets a pot of water on the stove to boil.

I suppose I can see where he might think that. That might even be a fair assessment.
I’m really self-aware. I need to add that to my list of positive attributes.

“So for the blow job, can I tie you up?”

“No.” The answer is firm, his lips twitching like the question was amusing.

Humph. “Can you tie me up?”

“How are you going to give me a blow job if you’re tied up?”

Dammit! Worst. Wife. Ever. “I suppose without my hands it’d be more like you using my mouth to masturbate while I did nothing, wouldn’t it?”

“What a visual you paint, Payton.”

“You’re still welcome to tie me up though. It doesn’t have to be tradesies.”

“Tradesies,” he mutters with a shake of his head, but he’s smiling as he uncorks the wine and pours two glasses.

“So, where do you see yourself in five years, Vince?” Might as well dive in with the talking.

He looks up from rolling back his shirt sleeves, a look of confusion flashing across his face replaced with an amused narrowing of his eyes.

“Excuse me? Is this an interview?” He laughs, placing a pan on my stovetop before rummaging through my cabinets for a bottle of olive oil.

“This is serious. You’ll be old and divorced. Think about that.”

“An annulment doesn’t count as a divorce. It doesn’t count as anything.”

“Try telling that to Britney. She’s gonna have that nineteen-hour marriage on her Wikipedia page until she dies. Wikipedia, Vince. That’s forever.”

“Okay, whoa. Let’s step back a moment here.”

“Do you need a wife with benefits?” I press on, because taking a step back doesn’t sound like it will get me anywhere.

“What exactly does that mean?”

“I have health insurance. Do you need health insurance? I could add you to my plan. It’s very reasonable, adding a spouse only costs like an extra two hundred dollars a month. It’s a really good plan, too. At least that’s what Lydia told me and she works in Human Resources so she would know. I’m no benefits package expert.”

“That’s not what the term ‘with benefits’ means.”

“Listen, in this case I think it’s exactly what that means. Society is the one who turned the word ‘benefit’ into something dirty.”

“So there’d be no sex in this exchange?”

“Don’t be ridiculous. Of course there’d be sex.”

“Did you just talk yourself into a circle?”

“Maybe.” Dammit.

Review: Stripped Down by Erin McCarthy

I am excited to be reviewing a new romance by Erin McCarthy. She remains one of my favorite romance authors. I remember when she won Lori Foster’s writing contest and got her book published. That is how long I’ve been a fan! I feel like Stripped Down is Erin going back to her roots in romantic comedy which I know I appreciate! I’ve missed her voice.

Sloane is turning thirty and she has just moved back to her hometown, Beaver Bend, Minnesota. (Not a huge fan of the name of the town but that’s because I’m a Minnesotan myself and this feels a bit too much even for me!) Sloane is angry and sad about her recent divorce. Her future feels unsettled now. She is renting an apartment above a mechanic’s shop and she is working with a local groomer (which she is very excited about). But is she ready for anything else unexpected in her life?

Rick had a crush on his best friend’s older sister all throughout high school. In fact, they shared a kiss that Sloane is unwilling to admit she enjoyed. When Rick learns she is back in town, he can’t help if his fantasies start spinning again. Rick has grown into a bit of a playboy since Sloane moved away. He has a nice body he has worked for, he is a talented mechanic, and oh yeah, he likes pleasing women. When Sloane sees him her first night back in town, she cannot believe the scrawny teen boy she remembers from high school is now stripping for a good cause at her father’s bar. And wow, what a body!

Sloane and Rick connect again through mutual lust but there is a lot more to their relationship than just that. I really enjoyed watching these two get to know each other all over again. I really liked that for the most part, their high school personas were swept aside after the first few chapters. Sloane has moved on from her popular and snobby days of high school. Rick has embraced his life in every way he can and enjoys sharing his…talents with women. These two have grown up and I liked how Erin McCarthy sets them on a path together as they discover each other as adults.

There are some surprises along the way for these characters, revelations about their histories and what they hope for in the future. Sloane is so much more than the trophy wife role she lived for ten years. Rick is a lot more than the local muscular hottie who entertains women. I enjoyed getting to know them and seeing their personalities evolve throughout the book.

Erin McCarthy’s voice feels both familiar and fresh in Stripped Down. I enjoyed getting to know Rick and Sloane and I am already anxious to read book two in the Tap That series, Strip Search. I think this series will be a great read for Erin McCarthy’s long time fans but also, a great discovery for all readers. This is a fun and frothy romance I enjoyed from start to finish!
