Old Pa's Corner :-
Terakaft - Anabayou (2015)


The band are pioneers of desert blues, they are one of the most well known bands representing a style that has become famous internationally since early 2000 called Tuareg rock. 2 members used to play with Tinariwen.

Here is the track Anabayou which is spot on if you like your Desert Blues. It is from the album Alone (2015)

Fantasma - 'Basbizile' (2015)


This track's a real head turner. The melange of Hip Hop, electro and traditional Zulu music hitting all my musical tickle spots, making me kick my leg out like a dog getting a tummy rub. These prawns hail from South Africa and feature a quintet of popular DJ's and musicians including Jo'burg rapper and founder, Spoek Mathombo. Their trademark 'Guzu' sound can be found on the excellent album, Free Love, which was out in March.

DJ Yoda - '2468' (2015)


With all the Star Wars hype at the moment it only seems fitting this is my track of the week. You can rest assured it is a lot better than what the actual Yoda might come up with, what with his quirky backwards talk. In the small window I have to listen to new music, this was perfect to welcome the day to with my little squirming babe. From the new album Breakfast Of Champions, it's got a great beat, it's educational and it's got old school Nintendo Game Boy noises too! The sort of musical lift a mum needs in the morning!

Hop Along - The Knock (2015)


Philadelphia pop punk outfit Hop Along are new to me. Lead singer and writer Frances Quinlan’s scratchy, distinctive voice sounds like an angel who has gone off the rails, visualise Gemma Hayes mixed with Kurt Cobain?  Recorded and mixed by John Agneoll (Kurt Vile, Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth) this features on their recently released second album, Painted Shut. The albums pretty damn good to.

The Prodigy - 'The Day Is My Enemy' (2015)


I recently found an old compilation CD I made in which I committed a musical sin... In that I had 2 tracks by the same artist on it... Its okay though as Shellhunter has since taught me the law. The 2 tracks were 'Girls' & 'Baby's Got A Temper' by The Prodigy, after hearing them again I decided to check out their latest album. The title track immediately stood out for me with its infectious drums and the female vocals, which I recognised the voice but couldn't place her. I have since found out it was 'Tricky's' oft collaborator Martina Topley-Bird. The rest of the album has some bummers but its getting back to their best IMHO. The video I've used is of a live show in Australia so different to the album version, but equally intoxicating.

TRACKS OF THE WEEK 18/01/2015 - The Districts, Midnite, The Prodigy

The Districts - 4th and Roeblin (2015)



The Districts are a four piece who hail from Pennsylvania whose debut album A Flourish And A Spoil, is released on the 10th February.  4th and Roebling, is named after the intersection where they parked their van during their first trip to Brooklyn.  It's the kind of song that makes you stand up and listen - very similar to the feeling I had when I first heard The Strokes - and if you are not tapping your hands and feet by the end you obviously have a medical condition.

Midnite - Worry Free (2015)

 

Here is a little bit of Reggae Roots for 2015 and it is from Midnite and is called Worry Free,  It is from the album Ride Tru (2015).

Midnite are a roots reggae band from St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, and have been playing since 1989..
The band's music follows in the tradition of the great roots Reggae bands of 1970s Jamaica and you can't say more than that. This chugs along very nicely and is a bit of a grower. No Worries!

The Prodigy - 'Nasty' (2015)


The Godfathers Of Rave have hit the spot with this one. Keith Flint with his luscious Essex accent and co have captured the true essence of what The Prodigy are about to me, bottled it, shaken it and let it spray out everywhere! This new but 'old school' single was released just last week to prep us for the arrival of new album The Day Is My Enemy out end of March. It's supposed to be fresher yet darker and from this offering is suitably noisy. This one is not for the faint hearted and definitely will be used like a strong espresso first thing in the morning!

WEDNESDAY CLUB - Flaming Lips - I am the Walrus

We went out just before Xmas for some Xmas decorations as we were staying in Spain this season, we usually return to the U.K. to be with Shellhunter and Flycasual. We bought some meat at our Butcher and Old Ma found a large tray of fresh double yolk eggs. (How do they know they are double yolks folk?).  I told Old Ma we will have to be careful with them as there was no top protection.

On the way back home we 'popped' into a local Bar for 'one'  drink and to check out if there was any space for Xmas dinner. We got involved with a disc Jockey guy who looked exactly like Keith Flint from The Prodigy. He had some bright red and green hair, with lots of metal bits on his ears and nose. According to him he travelled with The Prodigy when they toured and that Keith copied the look from him.

It is strange over here in Spain, all guitarists that you meet have all jammed with Jimi Hendrix and all guys who have been in the Forces are ex SAS. People seem to re-invent themselves for some reason. I once met an Ex-army, guitarist, cyclist, tennis player. I will stop right there as you know where I am going with this. Anyway we had a great old time with KF look alike, he was great fun (top bloke)....and after a few whiskey shots we booked up for Xmas Lunch there.

'Too Late to stop now' was said  Good Old Van.  I have quoted that one more times than I have had whiskey shots.

On finals on the way home we popped into 'Pats Bar' just for 'one for the road'.  Old Ma got involved with a woman who said she was a medium. I asked the medium if she could get in touch with an old guitar buddy of mine, a J. Hendrix. It did not go down too well. We left pretty late and taking the shopping in I said to Old Ma be careful. She got in the gate and slid on her arse....eggs up in the air!

 £250 pound in anybodys' money.

Only 3 eggs survived from 24 (double yolkers too)  .Laika, our Husky cross gobbled them greedily all up like a Hog. Old Ma was ok by the way! Just a sore Bum.

The next morning when I went out the whole place was a mess, covered in thick yellowish eggy and gooey poos! and slimy lumpy vomit! and let's not mention the smell !! Thank God these eggs were not hard boiled or poor Laika would have been bouncing into Lapland.

Guess who was on clean up duty!  It was of course, all my fault!

As a foot note : we do not normally have such exciting sorties? or do we? Take last Saturday......!

Christmas lunch by the way was excellant, there was more than enough for a doggy bag for Laika and Dixie our Yorkie. We shared a table with a very interesting and entertaing older couple whom we have arranged to meet for a future lunch date.  We missed out Pat's Bar on the way home.??

GUEST SPOT # 35 - The Prodigy - 'Charly Says'

It's Saturday and it's Guest Spot day....If you would like to do a guest spot for us then please let us know. Charly says you really should!!

Steve and his shorts are back but this time he's taking us back to where it all began for him. Raving it up in his bedroom with the Prodigy in his day glo t-shirt and white gloves....not a far cry from wearing a high vis jacket and gloves on the ramp, and probably just as noisy!

Where it all began for me, 14-15 years old watching The chart show late one night in my bedroom and they played this video. Quite simply I was hooked and wanted to start dancing around but thought better of it as it was nearly midnight. The video was nothing like any other I had seen and from then on my life revolved around rugby and The Prodigy. Knowing there was a new single coming out I would be waiting for the doors to open Saturday morning at Woolworths, pick up the new 7" and a handful of pick'n mix in my pocket and then straight home and not only loving the A-side but being blown away by the B-side.

SATURDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX! - The Prodigy - Firestarter



The Prodigy - Firestarter (1996)

I find it hard to believe that The Prodigy were first on the scene when I was 10 years old! I'm proud to say I know I've liked them since day dot. 'Out of Space' was right up every 10 year old's street with the constant cartoon "Boing!" running all the way through it!

Firestarter from the album The Fat of The Land to me, was so mega different from their first 2 albums as it launched Keith Flint straight into the limelight as a "front man." I fell for his freaky hairdo, mental energy and of course his famous tongue piercing! When I was 16 and on the verge of my long awaited rebellious stage, I took one look at Keith and thought, "Yes, I shall have one of those." I was in 6th form, in a Catholic school, and it was probably the most rebellious thing I could get away with, without it actually showing! Rather than coming home to mum and dad with the shocking display of the piercing itself, like I should have done, I told them I wanted one and was going to get it done whether they liked it or not. I was so disappointed when they simply answered, "Okay fine, how much is it, we'll give you some money." That's hardly rock and roll! I should have said I wanted to get a tattoo on my face!

Do you remember when The Box - Music television you control, was all the rage during those cable TV days? Music videos on demand, what could be better as a teen! And for those mums and dads out there, sorry about the phone bills. My brother and I heard Firestarter independently of each other and discussed how cool it was and joked about Keith's Essex accent. It wasn't available to buy yet so we called up The Box to request it. Anticipation doesn't describe the next 20 minutes! The dark tunnel appeared and the track listing flickered with Keith vibrating in the background. We put the volume onto full(a first ever for our TV I might add) and blasted it out in the front room. After about 10 seconds of jumping up and down to the beat and laughing together, my mum frantically appeared from the hallway shouting, "What's going on?! I thought a plane was crashing into the house!" I don't think we even turned it down. Sorry Mum!
