Cage The Elephant - 'Come A Little Closer' (2013)

I love the feel of this track, its make me feel like I'm driving down a desert road at dusk with the top down feeling the cooling air on my face. I have heard a few of Cage's previous songs but nothing struck a chord in me like this does. They're a 5 piece from the best named place in the US....Bowling Green, Kentucky! I assumed they were just another rock band but from what I hear, they have an everchanging and eclectic sound spanning blues, funk, rock and punk. Knowing that and liking this song as much as I do wills me to give their album from last year Melophobia a 'closer' listen!

The Coves - Let the Sun Go (2014)

 

Here is a track from an album from a boy girl duo the Coves  from Lemington Spa. It does not take too much to work out that they must have been brought up on doses of the Velvet Underground and washed down with a Mazzy Star dessert. This of course is not a bad thing. A very good upbringing I say. I am looking forward to some more helpings from their album Soft Friday (2014) out this month.

Moodymann - 'Lyk U Used 2' Feat Andres (2014)

I have been thoroughly enjoying Moodymann's self titled album this week all thanks to a recommendation by Gilles Peterson (regrettably not a personal one) and it's a delight of Soul, Funk and House. With a bit of Outkast's Andre 3000, a sliver of Sly Stone, a hint of Gil Scott-Heron and at times freakier than Prince, it certainly makes for a colourful and intriguing listen. But unbeknownst to me, this is DJ Kenny Dixon Jr's (aka Moodymann) 11th studio album and has been on the go since 1992. He's actually probably better known for helping create Detroit's signature House sound. For me a great discovery and album well worth your attention.

Barzin - All the while (2014)


Apart from the impending World War, I've had a pretty good week. In particular, it has been good for music discoveries of which this is one. Barzin (Barzin Hosseini is Canadian singer/songwriter whose material has been compared with Low & Red House Painters. He has released 4 albums to date, with his latest titled "To Live Alone in That Long Summer". I've been listening it to is all week and it is really quite good - All the while reminds me of early Radiohead (The Bends) and we all know that and a little bit of Melancholy is goes well with the Sunday lunch.

Ty - 'Let's Start' (2013)

I used to be heavily into UK Hip Hop (Lewis Parker, Jehst, Mark B and Blade etc) a number of years back but for some reason I sort of lost touch with it. Ty was one of them, his 2003 album Upwards especially, reminding me of the Native Tongues (De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest) in style as does his latest single, 'Let's Start' which is taken from the Londoner's Kick Snare and an Idea pt2 EP released in June. I caught it on the radio a couple of weeks back and realised what I've been missing as Ty sounds fresher than the average bear!

Gerry Garcia - It Stoned Me (2013)

 

This is fantastic track from Gerry Garcia's new album Gerry Garcia Live Vol 2. It was a live concert from 1990. It is the fabulous  It stoned Me,  Van Morrison's ode to growing up from his  Moondance album.

I just love the almost spiritual, gospel feel to it and Gerry Garcia's distinctive guitar solo is a Joy. I was a late convert to the Grateful Dead . But remember it is never too late.

The video is not the actual track on the album but it is taken from around the same time.

Scroobius Pip - '5 Minutes' (2013)

This year Mr Pip will be performing an hour long set of spoken word in August at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. To promote it, he has released this spoken word version of a track that originally featured on his 2010 album 'The Logic Of Chance' Having heard the original a number of times and liking it, it wasn't until I heard this version that I truly listened to the lyrics. I won't say much other than it's about domestic violence. Please listen to it..... Thanks.

Mazzy Star - California (2013)

A New Hope....

Mazzy Star are back with their first album in 17 years, Seasons Of Your Day, which is due 24th September. All of the band's original members appear on the record, led as always by singer Hope Sandoval and guitarist David Roback. Seasons Of Your Day also includes appearances by folk icon Bert Jansch, who died in 2011, and My Bloody Valentine drummer Colm Ó Cíosóig.

I've had a crush on Hope Sandoval's voice (ok, not just her voice) since 1990 and with a catch line like "Music for lovers, Music for Broken Hearts", she'll be casting her spell on me yet again!

She has the ability to warm places I never knew existed, which is why I'm especially excited at the prospect of an impending Mazzy Star release, the first since 1996's 'Among My Swan'. It's everything you'd come to expect from Mazzy Star, low key, dreamy Country-fide melancholia. Perfect for those drives into work at 4am or cozying up to a semi clad reveller after a mad party, unfortunately I tend to find myself experiencing the former.

Clock Opera - 'Lesson No.7' (2011)

I've had a glimpse of the criminal underworld this week. After trying to collect a ticket for a concert from the Box Office and go across to the pub over the road from the venue, I was practically rugby tackled by the bouncer and accused of being a tout! I wish I could show him the video to this song(if you are a bit squeamish look away now), then he'd know what he should really be worried about, not little old me! I heard 'Lesson No.7' on X-Posure on Xfm and liked it straight away, finding it so full of emotion. I can hear so many influences in there but I can't quite put my finger on them, perhaps it's just front man Guy Connelly's style of splicing in samples with noises from random objects! I keep hearing that Clock Opera are the ones to watch and this song definitely confirms it to me.

Jeff Buckley - 'Dream Brother' (Azedia Remix)

Last week I was laying beach in the Maldives, with no cares in the world apart from listening to a holiday playlist, when this quite literally woke me from my afternoon slumber....  

It was like being struck by lightning or "By the Power of Zeus!" because it made me do a double take....because 1. I hadn't a clue who it was by & 2. It got me excited that a great remix had been made of one of my favourite artists songs. Since being back in blighty, I haven't found out much about the chap but I've found his soundcloud page and have sent him a gushy email telling him of his great remix....sad I know! So when I find out more, you'll be the first to know!

Tom Russell - 'Mesabi' (2011)

This is taken from Tom's new album 'Mesabi'. It is ground that has been covered many times before ie. American Pie, but I feel I have a responsibility to us 'old farts brigade'(that includes me of course). This type of stuff may not be too popular with some of our younger 'guests'. But spare a moment, for your poor old dad, he might like this type of thing, go on, ask him, lets us know what he thinks! If he likes this, tell him about  'Wednesday Club'  he will be well received .

'Mesabi Iron Range' is 'The Troubadour Kid's' (Dylan) home Country and when you listen to the song you will hear lots of little references to him and some of his popular songs. So it can't be all bad!

Tom's previous Album was the acclaimed 'Blood and Candle Smoke' a collection with none other than Calexico.
