Still working my way through this mindfulness book. I'm into the more practical sections now, which are less annoying. The biggest take-away I've had from the last few chapters since I last posted are this: that the real practice of mindfulness meditation is not to not get distracted, but to notice when you're getting distracted and gently, kindly pull your mind back to mindfulness. So continually getting distracted and 'failing' while meditating is not actually failing, because the practice is in the noticing.

This is a really important idea for me to chew over, because I get very frustrated when I can't focus at all when I try to meditate. I'm also thinking a lot about the idea of neutral noticing; just observing my thoughts and feelings, thinking about my body, being in the moment. There was another exercise where you shut your eyes and just be in your hands for a while, think about how they feel, move your fingers, rub your palms, explore the sensations of your hands. This is a warm-up to the 'body scan' meditation, which I used to do a lot to fall asleep but have stopped doing. A CD came with the book which I think has audio walkthroughs of these meditations, but I haven't seen yet if I can put it on my ipod.

Yeah, my teacher says, "Thoughts will always arise. Just notice this and bring your attention back."

She says it's like training a puppy to walk on a leash. You don't jerk it cruelly around. You are very gentle with it and after a time it gets easier.

Go you!

I thought you were maybe not so new to mindfulness, but if you aren't familiar with the UCLA guided meditations, I highly recommend them: http://marc.ucla.edu/body.cfm?id=22

Yes. I don't have count of how many articles I'd read before a book pointed out to me that losing your focus and then becoming aware of that, pulling the focus back, is the mental equivalent of a push-up. It's part of the point of meditation, not an indication that you're doing it wrong or that it's too hard.

Considering how important a point it is, it's a shame it's not put across more clearly all over the place.

I have a mindfulness meditation that says something along the lines of, "Every time you notice you've become distracted, you get to practice being gentle, being kind to yourself, and refocussing on [your breath, in this case]."

I'm lucky that my intro RL courses made a point of this! I suspect those teachers who don't make this explicit count on you realizing this as you meditate. When you do, it's profound, and sticks. But if you don't, you may give up in frustration.

I loved the Lifelight meditations from Seán Ó Tárpaigh MSc. He has a lovely, mellow Irish voice and he's so gentle.
Find his 3, 10, and 15 minute guided meditations here:
