Denison’s Historic Season Ends in NCAA Super Regional

GRANVILLE, OH – Denison fell 7-6 to Birmingham-Southern (32-14) in game two of the NCAA Division III Baseball Super Regionals. The Big Red conclude their historic 2024 season with a 42-8 record and both the NCAC conference and tourney titles. This season, Denison also clinched the program’s first ever NCAA Baseball Regional title to advance to the NCAA Super Regional.
 
Game 2: Birmingham-Southern 7, Denison 6
  • Birmingham-Southern was the first to put runs on the board after scoring three during the first inning.
  • During the third inning, Denison’s Noah Leib (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) grounded out to first base, sending Jack Lutte (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) home to plate the Big Red’s first run of the game.
  • Birmingham-Southern would answer back in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs and extending its lead to four (5-1).
  • Denison would try to rally back with an RBI triple from Leib to right center and an RBI base hit from Jake Welsch (Glenmoore, PA/Downingtown West) during the seventh inning to pull the Big Red within two scores (5-3). George Viebock (Bethel, CT/Bethel) would then go on to retire the Panthers in order, giving the Big Red momentum heading into the bottom of the inning.
  • During the eighth inning, Owen Wilson (Charlotte, NC/South Mecklenburg) made his way into scoring position after he singled to right center, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error. Thanks to a Jake Blozy (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) groundout, Wilson was able to cut BSC’s lead in half (5-4).
  • The Panthers would answer back in the top of the ninth by plating two runs on a double from Charlie Bank.
  • With two outs in the final half inning, Denison was able to add two more runs to the board thanks to singles from Cade Nowik (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) and Colin Ravin (Charlotte, NC/Providence Day School), but the Big Red would fall short as they recorded their third out after a pitching change from the Panthers.
  • Leib and Nowik led the Denison offense with three hits apiece and combined for three of the team’s six RBI.
  • Peter Lemke (Geneva, IL/St. Francis) took the loss on the mound for Denison, scattering six hits through 3.2 innings of work while allowing three earned runs and striking out five.
