Actress Kavitta Verma, known for films such as
Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana and
R... Rajkumar, and the web series
Kaala, says she has consciously tried to avoid getting stuck in a particular kind of role. For her, having the opportunity to explore different characters is an important part of an actor’s growth.
“Typecasting is a natural discourse, but if an actor can, then they surely do look for a range. I do not want to keep repeating the same character,” she says.
However, she admits that actors do not always have complete control over the roles they take up. “I have done a web show where I felt that way, but that time I was in a phase where I just had no way out,” she says, acknowledging that a lack of opportunities can sometimes influence an actor’s decisions.
“Yes, sometimes it’s due to lack of opportunities that you do stuff,” she adds.
At the same time, Kavitta has been clear about the kind of work she is not comfortable doing. “I have said no to web and films that demanded lots of boldness as far as sensual scenes are concerned, and I did not accept. I rather chose to write poetry, and my two published books are available in the market,” she says.
She feels the opportunities available to female actors have improved, although finding substantial parts remains difficult. “I feel now the scenario is changing and more options are there for female actors to perform, but then again there is a different struggle to get the good roles,” she says.
What she is looking for now is a story with some social relevance. “I really want to be a part of a strong social story,” she says.
