AIADMK
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is a prominent regional political party in India, particularly known for its significant presence in Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry. The party was founded by the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu M.G. Ramachandran (M.G.R.) on October 17, 1972 in Madurai. This happened as a result of his departure from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) after being expelled by M. Karunanidhi, who was the leader of the DMK at the time.
The party is led by the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu Edappadi K. Palaniswami (E.P.S.) as general secretary of the party since 11 July 2022.
The AIADMK achieved its first victory in the Dindigul parliamentary by-election in 1973. However, it was founded in 1972 by MG Ramachandran (MGR), a Tamil actor and popular politician, as Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK).
The party had engaged more than 10 lakh members in just two months since its inception which exemplified its popularity back in the days as well. Following MGR's death in 1987, a succession battle ensued between J Jayalalithaa and MG Ramachandran's widow, MGR Janaki. Jayalalithaa finally took over as the party chief in 1989. The party first came to power in 1977, which was also the first time the party participated in election.
AIADMK created history in May 2015, when it scored consecutive victory in Tamil Nadu state elections. Nearly after three decades, the party faces another crisis as Jayalalithaa passed away on December 5, 2016 following prolonged illness.
The party has won a seven-time majority in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, making it the most successful political party in the history of the state.
