A tech enthusiast has spent three years writing data to microSD cards until they die, and the pile of casualties is now big enough to say something useful about which brands actually survive. Matt Cole, who posts as mikaey00, owns 351 cards covering 111 models from 52 brands. Of those, 177 are dead, 107 are still being tested, and 67 sit on a shelf waiting for a card reader to free up.
The scale is hard to picture. Cole's machines have pushed more than 133 petabytes of writes through these cards and finished over 4.6 million program-verify-erase cycles. A card counts as failed when it stops working, makes itself read-only, or shows verification errors across at least half its sectors. He posted the third anniversary update to Reddit's r/DataHoarder, where it pulled close to 6,000 upvotes.
PNY, Kingston and Delkin top the consumer microSD card rankings
The average consumer card in the test has lasted around 10,000 cycles. PNY sits at the top with 10 cards averaging 643 days and 15,700 cycles, and its PRO Elite Prime landed in the top 10 percent for every performance measurement Cole took. Kingston's 12 cards averaged 694 days and roughly 23,500 cycles, with the Canvas Select Plus 32GB still running after nearly the full three years.
Delkin's HYPERSPEED 128GB took more data written per card than any other consumer brand and posted the fastest random write speeds in the collection. Lexar and Samsung round out the top five. Amazon Basics 64GB cards have not failed at all after 788 days and 4.2PB written, but Cole left them out of the rankings because Amazon can swap the NAND without changing the product name.
SanDisk and ADATA cards died far sooner than their reputation suggests
The bottom of the list is more surprising. Walmart's onn 32GB cards averaged 40 days and 1,400 cycles. ADATA's Premier 32GB managed 2,350 cycles, Gigastone lasted 114 days on average, and none of Cole's nine Silicon Power cards reached 4,000 cycles. SanDisk gets a dishonorable mention as the biggest brand in the collection. Of 28 consumer cards, only five are still alive, at an average of 384 days and 9,404 cycles.
High endurance microSD cards did not earn the price premium
This is the finding buyers should sit with. High endurance cards averaged about 14,000 cycles against 10,000 for consumer models, a gap smaller than the marketing implies, and several performed worse. All three SanDisk High Endurance 64GB cards are dead. Kingston's High Endurance 32GB quit after an average of 143 days. Industrial cards are the real step up at roughly 122,000 cycles, with Kingston's Industrial 8GB hitting 141,600. The oddity is a single Hiksemi NEO 8GB, an ordinary consumer card, which has cleared 143,800 cycles and is still going.
What this microSD endurance test cannot tell you
Cole runs the project on a shelf of mini PCs and old gaming laptops, including a Beelink Mini-S, five TRIGKEY Green G4 units and an Asus ROG Strix Hero II. He buys most of the cards himself, and rising memory prices are making the hobby expensive.
None of this predicts how long a card lasts in a phone or a Steam Deck. It is a torture test. What it does show is that the badge on the packaging is a weaker signal than three years of writes.
