Isro has successfully tested an improved version of the first-stage solid booster of its Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV), a development expected to increase the rocket’s payload capacity by about 100 kg.
The ground static test of the SS1 motor was conducted on Aug 11 at the static test facility of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The test was aimed at validating design changes made to the booster to improve its performance and make the rocket easier to produce.
“The improvements include increasing the propellant burn rate in two motor segments, optimising the thermal protection system and modifying the nozzle subsystem to make it more production-friendly. The changes have also reduced the motor’s mass,” Isro said.
It added that during the test, it used extensive instrumentation to monitor more than 600 parameters covering the motor’s ignition, ballistics, structural and thermal behaviour, as well as its dynamics and acoustic performance. The test data showed that the motor’s performance was close to predictions.
“With the successful test, the design improvements to the SS1 stage have been qualified.
The upgraded stage is expected to raise the SSLV’s payload capacity to Low Earth Orbit by about 100 kg,” Isro said.
The SSLV was developed as a small satellite launcher designed for quick turnaround and launch-on-demand missions. Unlike larger launchers that require longer preparation, the SSLV is intended to be simpler and more production-friendly, allowing it to be manufactured in larger numbers.
The launcher has completed two successful development flights so far. Isro has also begun transferring SSLV technology to Indian industry, with the aim of enabling private companies to manufacture the rocket in large numbers and provide small satellite launch services to customers.
The SS1 test is therefore an important step not only in improving the launcher’s performance, but also in preparing it for more regular commercial production and operations.
