A growing planetary family

Per NASA, Beta Pictoris is basically a cosmic newborn, only 20 million years old. For context, our Sun is more than 4.6 billion years old. What do we actually know about Beta Pictoris d?

Here’s what we know so far: at least two, possibly four times heavier than Jupiter, which makes it a gas giant. Its orbit is a long one: about 91 years to take one trip around its star. Its atmosphere contains methane, water vapor, and carbon monoxide, all clues to its temperature and how it formed. Despite being huge, it’s seriously dim — 100 times fainter than the other planets in this system, which is exactly why everyone missed it for so long.However, Beta Pictoris d is not exactly a new arrival; it has actually photobombed astronomical images for over a decade. Astronomers just hadn’t figured out what they were seeing.Buried under all that debris and bright starlight, the planet needed just the right tool and analysis to come out of hiding.
