Brahmakamala Movie Review: A Sensitive Take on Motherhood and Its Many Emotions

As the day of the ceremony approaches, her husband Raman (Siddu Poornachandra) arrives late, and it becomes evident that their marriage has been strained with him and in-laws. Her parents have also remained distant since she chose to marry against their wishes. After years of being unable to conceive and multiple failed IVF attempts, Apeksha has also been subjected to taunts and remarks surrounding her inability to become a mother.Unable to endure the continued disrespect, Apeksha tells her husband that she will return home only with a baby and leaves to live by herself. The story soon takes a turn when it is revealed that she has been pretending to be pregnant and has secretly arranged to obtain a baby through an unofficial adoption. The arrangement involves Ravi (Lokendra Surya), a man burdened with debt who works as a welder nearby.The situation becomes complicated when Ravi's wife, Gauri (Ruthu Chaithra), goes into labour earlier than expected. As Ravi rushes her to the hospital, a series of confusions and unforeseen circumstances leave him stranded, setting off a chain of events that continually changes the course of the story. At one end is a woman in labour who cannot find her husband and is left disoriented herself; at the other is a woman who cannot become a mother and has become trapped in a web of lies created to overcome the shame associated with infertility. Amid these conflicting circumstances, the film follows how a child is born and subsequently lost with the same suddenness and fleeting nature associated with the blooming of the Brahmakamala flower.Brahmakamala approaches motherhood as a sensitive emotional drama, exploring its different dimensions and the emotions women experience around it. The actors deliver their parts adequately, with the performances serving the emotional premise of the film.Technically, however, the film is largely functional rather than impressive. Although it has a short runtime, the pacing feels slow, with gaps in the narrative that prevent the storytelling from developing the sharpness required for stronger emotional immersion.That said, Brahmakamala handles its central subject with sensitivity and presents motherhood through different perspectives while acknowledging the complex emotions surrounding it. Its positive message and empathetic treatment of the subject remain its stronger aspects.
