Trichy: A full-scale joint disaster management mock drill was conducted by the Trichy railway division at the goods yard complex in Trichy city on Friday to assess the preparedness of various railway departments and emergency responders including that of the state government in responding to and handling a crisis-like situation involving a train accident.
A simulated scenario simulating a major train accident with derailment and capsizing of three coaches including one AC coach, one general coach and a sleeper coach (climbed over general coach) was performed.
The exercise covered activation of emergency arrangements, mobilisation of rescue and medical resources, fire response, arrival of specialized search and rescue machinery for casualty extrication, and establishing a medical triage.
NDRF and rescue teams carried out specialised search, rescue and casualty extrication operations. Tamil Nadu fire and rescue services undertook the simulated fire response to control a fire accident in a derailed coach. Effectiveness of emergency response, communication and inter-agency coordination and teamwork in ensuring passenger safety was assessed.
At the end of the mock drill, a debriefing session was held to discuss the response mechanism among participating agencies.
