'Had chest pain after my car was attacked by huge stone, couldn't speak for 2 days': Mamata Banerjee

KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo and former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday claimed that a large stone thrown at her car during a recent attack on her convoy caused chest pain.Speaking at Kolkata's Shyambazar 5 Point Crossing, Banerjee said she had initially been reluctant to attend the event because of her physical discomfort but decided to participate in support of her party's digital wing.“The stone that was thrown at our car, the large brick, because of that, I had pain in my chest,” she said.Banerjee was travelling to North 24 Parganas on Sunday to meet the family of a deceased TMC worker when her convoy was allegedly intercepted and targeted with projectiles, news agency ANI reported.Lok Sabha MP Kalyan Banerjee and Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen were accompanying her at the time.The former chief minister also accused the police of selectively targeting TMC workers and alleged that law enforcement personnel were acting in support of BJP workers.“Whom to arrest or not arrest is the police's job. The police's job is only to arrest Trinamool Congress,” Banerjee said.She further alleged that BJP workers, along with police personnel, had intimidated TMC members at a party office, ANI reported.Meanwhile, West Bengal transport minister Arjun Singh rejected allegations that the BJP was behind the attack on Banerjee's convoy.Singh said no BJP programme was being held at the location and claimed that no BJP workers were present when the incident took place.He attributed the stone-pelting to local anger over alleged demolition and looting of homes.“Our party is against it. They did so because their homes were being looted and demolished. There was no BJP programme there; no one from the BJP was present,” Singh said.(With agency inputs)
