Man held for throwing 11-month-old daughter into Yamuna

Agra: A 30-year-old farmer was arrested for allegedly throwing his 11-month-old daughter into Yamuna because he suspected his wife of having an extramarital relationship and did not believe the child was his, police said on Sunday. The baby remained missing as police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams continued searching the river.
The family said Rinku Kumar took his wife, Lakshmi Devi, and daughter Vanshika out on the pretext of shopping and stopped at a bridge near their village, Nere, purportedly to take photographs. He then allegedly threw the baby into the river and, when Lakshmi raised an alarm, tried to push her in as well. She managed to hold on to the bridge railing and called for help, following which passers-by caught Rinku and alerted police on 112. Vanshika was swept away by the current and had not been found at the time of filing this report.
Rinku and Lakshmi married in June 2024 but had been living separately for several months due to marital disputes. Lakshmi’s family alleged that Rinku and his family had harassed her over dowry and that he had pressured her father to transfer a plot in the village to his name.
DCP (city) Sayed Ali Abbas said Rinku admitted during questioning that he threw the child into the river after an argument with his wife escalated. A case was registered under BNS section 103(1) (murder). “All our teams are working to locate the child,” Abbas said.
