Expert team from Japan to look into semiconductor opportunities in UP

Lucknow: In a boost to UP’s effort to develop a semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in the state, Japan is likely to send an industry team to explore opportunities in the area.
The possibility, pitched by chief minister Yogi Adityanath to Japanese ambassador to India Ono Keiichi on Friday, seeks to deepen the partnership between UP and Japan, fortifying it at the ongoing investment cooperation meet.
An official spokesperson said that the two sides discussed expanding cooperation in semiconductors, investment, human resource development, employment and tourism.
“The semiconductor sector emerged as a key focus, with the Japanese side informing the CM that semiconductors have been identified among the five priority areas for India-Japan economic security cooperation during Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi’s India visit in July,” a spokesperson said.
Officials said that a Japanese industry team was scheduled to visit UP in mid-Sept to study opportunities in the sector.
“The delegation is also expected to visit Semicon India and HCL Technologies. Possibilities of UP participating in meetings of the semiconductor committee of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry were also discussed,” an official said.
Citing the CM, he said: “Japan’s technological expertise and UP’s industrial capabilities offers significant scope for collaboration in advanced technology. The state is ready to take its economic and industrial partnership with Japan to a new level.”
The CM also invited Japanese companies to explore investment opportunities in UP, from MSMEs to large industries.
He highlighted the state’s large market, improving connectivity, industrial base and expanding infrastructure. “Japan City in Noida may serve as an important centre for Japanese investment,” he added.
Japanese companies including Yamaha, Denso, NTT Data, Toyo Ink and Panasonic already have a presence in the state. Kubota is also working on manufacturing tractors and construction machinery near Japan City.
The meeting also focused on developing a workforce tailored to Japanese industry requirements. Yogi said UP could work with Japan to establish skill development centres offering technical and job-oriented training to young people.
Opportunities for UP youth in manufacturing, agriculture and nursing care in Japan were also discussed.
The two sides explored expanding technical training and employment pathways through Japanese-language training, specialised worker programmes and industry-based skills.
An employment fair held in March at RB PG College in Agra for jobs in Japan’s agriculture sector was cited as an example of the emerging cooperation.
An agreement between a private university and Japan’s Ibaraki prefecture for student internships and training was also discussed.
Tourism emerged as another area of cooperation, with Japan requesting UP’s participation in Tourism Expo Japan 2026 in Sept.
The CM agreed to the proposal. The state plans to showcase its Buddhist, spiritual, cultural and heritage destinations to Japanese travellers.
The two sides also highlighted shared Buddhist links, including the historical connection between Sarnath and Nara.
With India-Japan diplomatic ties set to complete 75 years in 2027, the engagement is expected to give further momentum to tourism and people-to-people exchanges.
