​​Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Zilla Parishad (ZP) has sought water from the Nandur-Madhmeshwar irrigation project from Nashik district to address water scarcity in Gangapur and Vaijapur district talukas.
Additional CEO of ZP, Vasudev Solanke said a proposal seeking the release of water from the express canal of Nandur-Madhmeshwar irrigation project was passed during the recent monthly meeting of the ZP, and it would be forwarded to Godavari Marathwada Irrigation Development Corporation (GMIDC).
“The water level of wells and other water bodies from Gangapur and Vaijapur talukas has dipped due to the lack of expected rainfall. As a result, the problem of drinking water and irrigation for agriculture is becoming serious in many places in the rural areas,” he said.

Authorities said Kolhapur type weirs (a type of wall built across a river to stop or change the direction of the water flow) , percolation ponds and small irrigation projects owned by ZP, local self-governing bodies, and other departments at various places have insufficient water storage.


“There is a continuous demand from the farmers and citizens of the said talukas that excess water available from the Nandur-Madhmeshwar project should be released into the relevant water reservoirs,” Solanke said.

Top GMIDC officials refused to comment on the demand for the release of water for the talukas bordering Nashik district. “The need for equitable water distribution for upstream and downstream areas of Jayakwadi dam from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar will be reviewed by October 15,” a senior official said.


Meanwhile, Marathwada continues to witness a lean phase of monsoon in August with the region developing nearly 67% rainfall deficiency by Monday. Vaijapur has 51% deficiency, while Gangapur has 49% deficiency, according to official data.
