GVMC chief accelerates Vizag water, sewer projects

Visakhapatnam: GVMC commissioner Ketan Garg directed officials to speed up major projects and complete them within the stipulated timelines. He reviewed the 24x7 water supply project, sewerage and STP works, major water supply pipelines, and smart street vending zone works. As part of the 24x7 water supply project being implemented in the north-western part of the city with Asian Development Bank assistance, Garg visited households in Ambedkar Colony in Ward 51 of the North Zone.
He interacted with residents about the continuity and quality of the water supply. He also drank water directly from a household tap to check its quality. Residents said the round-the-clock water supply has reduced their dependence on borewells and expressed satisfaction with the service. Of the 40,000 connections planned under the project, 28,000 have been completed so far.
Garg directed the executing agency and the superintending engineer, Yedukondalu, to complete the remaining connections by the end of September. He also directed officials to integrate the water billing system with the online platform and take steps to collect water charges.
Garg inspected the Rs 116.4 crore water supply pipeline project being taken up with 15th Finance Commission funds. The works include supplying treated water from the 85 MLD water treatment plant at Aganampudi to Anakapalle head water works and laying a pipeline from Aganampudi to Narava. He directed KLSR Infratech representatives to complete the remaining works within 45 days and asked Yedukondalu to closely monitor the progress.
The commissioner also inspected the proposed sewage treatment plant site at Kapuluppada under the Rs 658.6 crore comprehensive sewerage project for Madhurawada. The project includes a sewer network, pumping stations, transmission mains, an STP and other infrastructure. It is being funded through Rs 498 crore in IFC loan assistance, Rs 151.7 crore under the Centre’s urban challenge fund and Rs 8.91 crore as the ULB share.
Garg directed officials to take up the proposed 20 MLD STP on the 30-acre site at Kapuluppada, along with a green belt, compound wall and construction and demolition waste facilities.
