Pogo was actually pretty cerebral stuff. Full of social and political commentary. Way over my head when I was a kid. And when it stepped into the American political scene, I had no to relate with that – though of admired the artwork and caricatures of Agnew and Nixon etc. Kelly got into some hot water over some of that as i recall. So did Al Capp (L’il Abner). I just the characters and the artwork (I studied Art and did a lot of cartooning myself). 1971. I remember that year …42 years ago.
After I got old enough to understand what they were about, I became a real fan of Walt Kelley and Al Capp. If a picture is worth a thousand words, theirs were worth 10,000. Back in those days, everyone got in trouble for saying anything the government didn’t like … which was pretty much everything that wasn’t the current party line. Growing up in the Nixon-Agnew era was — interesting.
