On this final Friday of February, we get a first Quick Fire Friday of the month, all done in famous Ronny Dijksterhuis style! Which means, this will get hot and heavy from here on in! You ready? 

Thank God it's Friday! Well, not every Friday, but it gets damn near close with the Doom Charts hitting the streets on the first one of every month, the Peroration List on the third and almost every moon cycle also a Quick Fire Friday. Not really sure if I already said it's Friday and we should thank God for that, but hey, it is, so you might as well enjoy these gems and jams we selected for you. Crank up the volume and make your neighbours wish it was Monday again.

 

Corrosion of Conformity - Gimme Some Moore

Let's start today with a big song by a legendary band. 'Gimme Some Moore' is a heavy, groove-driven beast that feels like a smack in the face with titanium fist and tons of explosives. If this is any indication of the quality on offer, than Corrosion of Conformity's new album 'Good God, Baad Man' (to be released on April 3rd through Nuclear Blast Records) is shaping up the be by far their best since 'Wiseblood'.

Strawberry Bus Tour From Hell - Rööki-Rainerin paluu

Spotlighting Finnish underground music through the Outola radio show, these blokes also make music under the moniker Strawberry Bus Tour From Hell, whose music regularly serves as the outro for the radio show. Starting out as a pure laidback bossanova noise act, their latest single mixes spacerock, americana, stoner rock and smooth jazz, made complete with stories about the nineties Turku rock scene. In doing so, they come peeking around the corner of the heavy underground and it's our pleasure to let you know.

Багно is an instrumental doom band from Lviv, Ukraine that straightens the bedsheets in their silver-plated ghost traveling machine especially for you to enjoy an atmospheric brand of heavy doom with added synths to give the overall sound a spooky edge. Like they're wading through the swamp on a hoverboard. Over ten minutes of menacing lightness - or enlightening darkness. The choice is up to you.

Midnightsun / Maoong - Hymns From: The Edge of Dusk

Travelling a bit farther east, we encounter two bands that are diving deeper into the gutters filled with dirt and gloom. 'Hymns From: The Edge of Dusk' is an appropriate title for a split of these Indonesian bands that have musical aggression tattooed on their foreheads and who both lend a tandem of songs to this release. Midnightsun brings doom with a sludge infused core that comes at you like a diesel train, chugging along at a sluggish pace, but relentless and deadly when it comes to close. Maoong on the other hand is more like a turbo-charged bulldozer that manages to go from naught to sixty in a matter of seconds. Fast stoner sludge and mid- to high-paced doom that is so goddamn raucous they'll run you over before you've got the chance to cry for help. Great work by Robuma Records combining these two totally different, yet strangely complementing bands.

Low Country Jam Machine - Outta Sight

If you've got to consume well-aged rock music straight because, well, the ice is safely tucked away in a freezer, lock closed, key tossed away, then it won't be a problem being force-fed Low Country Jam Machine's second ep 'Outta Sight'. Four good songs with a strong seventies vibe. For fans of Greta Van Fleet, Rival Sons and Black Spiders.

Bad Mothers Union - Cut In Half

March 19th sees the release of Bad Mothers Union's new Album 'Sore Losers'. January delivered the first preview through the twisted and slightly alienating heavy psych song 'God's Intercom'. This month these Irishmen treat us to another tune of the album, a mystical, dragging, dark, drawn-out yet exiting experimental psychedelic trip called 'Cut in Half'. God knows how the other tracks will sound, but I for one am more than eager to find out because both previews are killer.

And we're gonna go out with a bang, because that's what we're supposed to do, right? What band better to handle those closing duties than South African melodic heavy rockers Ruff Majik with their blistering new single 'For the Life of Me', released today. It's one big ball of blistering swing, controlled aggression and melodic goodness. If that isn't enough in itself, South African blues musician Dan Patlansky jumps in to not only give the guys a bit of help, but to blend in seamlessly on this song that'll be spinning in you head for days after just one spin.

As usual, I’m late to the party. But you must know, I felt pretty weird about the message that appeared on Instagram almost a year ago. It felt like the Ruff Majik madness I love so dearly was coming to an abrupt halt. And I missed them immediately. And I was a bit afraid to contact frontman Johni Holiday to get the lowdown. Cause it seemed like he was going through something big. Perhaps I should have anyway. That way I might have been privy to the new path they are now carving out, the new rebellion, the new rules, made up as they move forward… I missed them. But I am happy they are back and even though I’ve been talking about how I felt during their absence and their return, it’s not about me. It’s about Ruff Majik and their quest to get you involved. To open you up. To let you spill your guts. And to get you all revved up!

A new chapter begins for Ruff Majik with the release of latest single Can Of Wyrms

South African heavy rock outfit Ruff Majik return with Can Of Wyrms, a stark and emotionally unguarded single that confronts suicide from the perspective of those left behind. Rather than romanticizing loss or framing it through spectacle, Can Of Wyrms documents grief as an ongoing presence — unresolved, heavy, and communal. The song was written years ago, but only now finds its moment, arriving as the band re-emerge after a period marked by silence, distance, and personal reckoning.

Frontman Johni Holiday has previously spoken openly about PTSD, agoraphobia, and cycles of dependency formed while touring — struggles that ultimately led to Ruff Majik stepping away before the weight became fatal. That pause, and the clarity it forced, directly informs the song’s restraint. Can Of Wyrms does not seek answers. It acknowledges absence, as well as the battle waged by those in the thick of it. Musically, the track balances Ruff Majik’s stoner-punk urgency with a raw yet anthemic vulnerability. Gang vocals — recorded with friends and members of the South African underground music community — form the emotional core of the song, reinforcing its central idea: this grief is shared, not isolated.

The single also features guest vocals by Ben from Slomosa, adding a further layer of communal voice and international solidarity to a deeply personal release. All proceeds from Can Of Wyrms, including associated merchandise, will be directed toward mental-health support initiatives. The release coincides with Ruff Majik’s first live performance (31 January, Pretoria, South Africa) , since their hiatus — not framed as a victory lap, but as a statement of intent. In the band's own words: "There is work to be done."
 
Can Of Wyrms is not a eulogy. It is a warning, a remembrance, and a refusal to buckle under the pressures of the world. This single is currently available on BandCamp only, and will be released on all other platforms on 16 January 2026. The band will take no requests for press until the first phase is complete.

Mornin! Yes, it’s Tuesday now. But you know what happened. The Doom Charts for September went live on Friday and then we scooted off to the North of the Netherlands for an Into The Void Festival that will go down in history as one of the best! And then when Monday morning came around we were still reeling from all those magnificent shows and trying to make sure other rent paying work got done. Just like we will have to make sure to get some HiVe work done this week! It will happen. Last week, we only put up those words about the new Ruff Majik, posted the wild single for Underdogs featuring Nick Oliveri and premiered that kick ass Ghost Frog video. A pigeon was fluttering and flailing over my head as I was contemplating the name of the band. It might be one of the best names ever chosen. Or it might be a case of manifestation. Whatever it is, magic surrounds the South African four. Not the faerie dust kind of magic, but the stuff of rock ‘n roll legends. Of coincidences to huge to comprehend and of weirdness that rolls out in front of them like a huge carpet. A red carpet. A magic carpet. So, I shot the pigeon. I shot the pigeon by accident though, I’m not a murderous individual, I stumbled and the .357 fell out of my hands. A happy accident, for it was a carrying pigeon straight out of South Africa. Bringing me the news, the lowdown and all the happiness that will explode in October. It brought me the new Moth Eater album by the South African four manifesting itself throughout the globe as Ruff Majik! In fact... It explodes today!

It's called Moth Eater and reflects once again on times passed. Not just from when founder, vocalist and guitar player Johni Holiday was a young kid, ate a moth and almost suffocated. But more importantly about the past years. Together with Devil’s Cattle from 2020 and Elektrik Ram from 2022 it documents trials and tribulations, adventures and memories of nights that might actually never have happened. Part history for the singer and part of what the band has gone through. It marks the end of the trilogy, well, sort off. A trilogy that opened up the sound for Ruff Majik with that Devil’s Cattle album, showed even more possibilities sound wise and lyrical wise with Elektrik Ram and actually offered a glimpse into what could be. Cause after Elektrik Ram everything would be up for grabs! And Moth Eater is that and more: more of everything. 

It's full. Chuck full. To the brink of explosion. The dialing tone (Oh how I love Chemically Humanized from Elektrik Ram and how I love the end of that album and thus the start of this one.) The voicemail message, the brutish South African promoter threatening to make sure the band never plays another show again. The subdued drums promising ruckus, the extra round of riffs before it… finally comes… Explosion! It’s the perfect opener. What A Time To Be A Knife, already released as a single, featuring additional screams by Reegan du Buisson from Facing The Gallows sits there almost as a twin brother to the opener from Elektrik Ram. Except that this time they do not recount dubious memories, but harsh realities and how they will deal with them if they come across those ‘fucking clowns’. There is one more twin on the album, or so it seems. Ending title track Moth Eater has on some level the same energy as Chemically Humanized. And once again sporting stunning lyrics. Especially that second verse starting with, ‘Oh no, have you heard the news, the sky is falling, many years too soon…” If you weren’t feeling them goosebumps before you will now.

Transitioning into another voicemail, where you can hear some 'dingbat' (grin) calling in and promising to deliver the goods or meeting up at some time somewhere before second track Dirt And Deer Blood begins. The lyrics are once again off the chart, as is his manner of uttering them, it drives the song into a frenzied hallucinations of bar scenes at the very end of the night. Out of your depth and exactly where you are meant to be. It’s dirty, just like the groove and the way the drums push every second of this track as much as the vocals. Talking about frenzy! By The Hammer is most freakishly chaotic and rumbling track you will hear this year, pulling earlobes and punching your tympanic membrane, making you dizzy and stumbling around, trying to leave the impression that you are actually dancing. The perfect time for a slower track, darker and ominous, and as the wind howls outside you are listening to We’re Not Out Of The Swamp Yet. Brilliantly delivered, with a low hum constantly present and a Johni Holiday going as low as possible. Doubling himself as the song rolls on. So much of the vocalization and minute details become audible as you continue to spin the record, there seems to be even more of it than on Elektrik Ram. Battering Lamb, on so many levels a straight forward rocker, but then you start hearing all the different layers, the vocal touches, the ringing extra melody, the whoo! O’ and let’s not forget this wonderful sentence: “oh honey, you should’ve seen me in my prime, I could have made it, I just didn’t have the time.” 

Cult Eyes features Arvid Hällagård from Greenleaf as second vocalist. A bluesy stonerrock  track that’s all filled with this bop and bounce attitude, that keeps you glued to the groove, bopping along like a cartoon character with a way too long neck, trying to sing with them and going extra hard on the melody. The bass work, so aloof, almost jazzy and so possessed of the natural progression the track needs. Which again seems to be front at center when following track Baby’s First Guillotine rolls around. Slowly building this ruined landscape of riffs and lines, guitars gradually taking over to color in the painting, while the drums sneak in these twisted fills and tension moments. The percussion is another aspect of Moth Eater that just seems to so pristine in its execution, just listen to following track Ingozi featuring the enigmatic Lerato. Funk infused, it’s not yet the ‘slunk’ record or ‘fudge’ song they would love to produce one day, although it does thunder towards more noise in the end, it’s too clear and pronounced. And that jazzy copper work, brilliant touch. Wasted Youth is the last single that came out, glorifying their vocal harmonies by giving them every bit of attention. But not before you have an almost tekno repetition at two thirds of the track. The lyrics can be as depressive as they come, but there’s a tone of acceptance in them. And that doubles when world shattering final track Moth Eater comes around, musically and lyrically, (which I already mentioned). And those earlier mentioned goosebumps might double with those final lines… From ‘closing the book’ till ‘I feel fine’… It’s been a while…   

I fell in love with so many of Elektrik Ram. In fact, I fell in love with everything. And now I’ve gone and done that again. For Moth Eater has everything.

Evenin! How’s it going over there? Hope all is well! We’ve got reviews coming up delivered by the honorable Jon McGough and the heavy laureate poet Ronny Dijksterhuis. Not spilling the beans yet, but some of it might be lengthy and some of it might be out of the box! But all of it is absolutely worth it! Looking back at the week past we had serious trouble getting some HiVe time in. But when the boys from Van Groover dropped a vinyl gift in our lap, we kicked everything else to the curb, spent hours listening to the double edged Both Shop EP’s record and started typing our ass off. Managing to spread the good word about the Ruff Majik and Psychlona videos as well as reviewing the wonderful Dö album, the cool Eyes of The Oak and the majestic The Mothercow. Earlier in the week we were honored to premier the debut album by Sbarco, which we wrote a review about as well. He's everywhere! That dude from Ruff Majik! You know the cat! Johni Holliday, and this time he wreaks havoc on the new Crash And The Void song: Neon Bloodstains! Ferocious, serrated and ready to cut you up! What a time to be knife indeed! Wowzah! Dangerous animals combined lead to Neon Bloodstains!

Crash And The Void Unleashes New Single Neon Bloodstains Featuring Johni Holiday of Ruff Majik

Pretoria’s own Crash And The Void is back and bolder than ever with their new single Neon Bloodstains out today via Mongrel Records, featuring guest vocals from Johni Holiday of Ruff Majik. Inspired by the intense and competitive world of the video game Cyberpunk 2077, the band crafted a song that mirrors the violence and drive required to succeed in the music industry. “I feel like the violence and competitive nature found in the game, which I played extensively, was a good parallel to the music industry and how you need to carve your way to success,” says Marius Schutte, the band’s vocalist and primary songwriter. The track’s message is clear: stand your ground, don't sell yourself short, and be realistic about the monumental task ahead when striving for success.

This self-produced song showcases the collaborative spirit of Crash And The Void. Initially entered into a competition to be featured in Cyberpunk 2077, the song evolved beyond its original form. The final doom breakdown, a highlight of the track, was a collective effort created during a rehearsal. The original demo, solely created by Marius Schutte, didn’t include this breakdown due to competition restrictions. Marius’s love for soundtracks and ludomusicology is evident, with the song’s opening lead line being a heavily distorted synthesizer inspired by Mick Gordon’s work on the DOOM soundtrack.

Another week in the books. Another week that flew by and where we had little time to really get down and dirty for Stoner HiVe. One reason is that we had to have Greif, the new Zeal & Ardor record on repeat due to an upcoming interview with the man. No punishment at all! What a record! And when Psychlona sends their new release Warped Vision you can bet your ass we will spin that as much as possible as well. And Ruff Majik, Moth Eater won’t come out till early October, but let me state the obvious: it’s a magical rock ‘n roll battering ram once again! The new The Anomalys record Down The Hole comes out in September and it’s another high riding piece of rock! Damn, loads of good stuff arriving in the near future! But others have already arrived and we mentioned a few, like the new Starspawn of Cthulhu, expertly written by Jon McGough or the new Poste 942, Burnt Lung and Midnight Whiskey Massacre. We mentioned that wild single by The Devil's Cabana Boiz and we mentioned that we will be doing a FULL ALBUM PREMIERE by Kahfa this Wednesday! Hmmm, looking at this short screed, I guess we did not waste ever spare minute of the week passed. Let’s see if we can do better this week. Have a great one everyone!

And yes, as you can hear pretty quickly, they’ve teamed up with Ruff Majik’s Johni Holiday for this track. A perfect fit! Cause a Wizard is only a Wizard if it can shoot that Majik when the need arises! Animated by the band themselves, this is some impressive stuff! The stuff of sorcery… And the song has that special something as well… Faerie dust abound! So go listen, follow their plan, this can’t go wrong… Cause they’re a goddamn …Wizard, Man!!!

Ola chico’s! As we return from a three week off grid holiday in Spain, where we listened to loads of the May Doom Charts and even more classics, I realized I could post the Top 10 list of the albums listened to before I left. So, above, is the list of albums listened to in that first week of June. And now we race forward into the month! Which means the June Doom Charts is just around the corner… Can’t wait to see the new Doom Charts edition… As mentioned, it might take a day or two before we are really settled in, and another two to get through those thousand emails… But we’re back and we will get there in the end… Cause we need to check’m out, all of ‘m!

Sorry, we’re going to boast a bit now. We’ve been one of the lucky ones that have been living with this track for a month or two now. And we’ve also been one of the lucky ones to already have heard it live. O’ and let’s not forget… We’ve also been one of the lucky ones to drive them home, offer them a place to sleep and serve them breakfast and basically cater to their every need. And we’ve been happy to do it! Cause Ruff Majik has something special, it needs to be cherished, the boys need to be stroked and fondled with care so that it may grow! And flower into the mushroom cloud that wants to envelope everything! And yes, it needs to be heard by one and all! Just get a load of the new single: What A Time To Be A Knife! It’s the first single of the new Moth Eater album to arrive via Sound of Liberation Records somewhere around October. It will be the completion of the trilogy that started with The Devil’s Cattle and Elektrik Ram and it will be telling the tale of Ruff Majik on the road, the good fight against everything evil they’re in and about that explosive energy that courses through the veins of these good ol’ boys!
