Even though, we do not yet know… What the rest of the album will sound like… The first single promises a lot… “Through Zero” unfolds like a journey across an unseen threshold, where the narrator drifts between life and death, searching for meaning in the space between. Guided by echoes of the past and a growing sense of acceptance, they begin to see endings not as final, but as passageways into something unknown. Around them, sound mirrors the transformation, dreamlike textures swirl with heavy, grounding riffs, while hypnotic rhythms pull them forward. Moments of tension give way to clarity, fear softens into understanding. By the end, the journey doesn’t resolve but continues… Suggesting that crossing “zero” is not an end, but a beginning in disguise. And thus, the logical first single for the brand new Elder album dropping May 29th on Stickman Records for Europe, Blues Funeral Recordings in North America and Bird’s Robe in Australia…

Progressive psych rock heavyweights Elder have released a first single, the title track of their forthcoming studio album “Through Zero”. The record is set for release on May 29 in Europe via Stickman Records, in North America through Blues Funeral Recordings and Bird’s Robe in Australia. Album pre-orders start today.

"In a diverse album, the title track of our new album sits on the middle of the spectrum and is a perfect first impression of what’s to come," says guitarist and singer Nick DiSalvo. "Dreamy, heavy, raw, electronic, there’s a bit of everything that makes this album special to us. Through Zero is about impermanence, coming to terms with mortality and the long struggle to not only make peace but to find a sort of solidarity with the dead. The more time passes, the more this theme returns to me, and always in a new light - much as our music always returns in a slightly changed state reflecting who we are becoming."

Two decades into their existence, Elder remain an anomaly in the heavy underground - a rare band with the ability to absorb and shed influences from a myriad of genres without falling into pastiche or losing their own identity. Through Zero stands as a strong reaffirmation of their commitment to pushing boundaries in the world of heavy rock and cements the group’s status as leaders of the pack in heavy psychedelic rock.

Over the past twenty years, Elder have mastered crushing riffs, melodic jaunts, progressive patterns, hypnotic grooves and ethereal atmosphere. On Through Zero, the band channel these years of experience into what may be their most immediate and engaging record to date, while allowing seeds from outside the sphere of rock music to take root and bloom within their progressive framework. Listeners will find familiar elements of new textures, sequences, and sounds alongside Elder’s iconic take on heavy rock. As always, every spin reveals new details. 

Recorded at Big Snuff Studios in Berlin across several months between tours in 2025, Through Zero marks the first album the band not only produced themselves, but also co-mixed together with longtime collaborator Richard Behrens. Mastered by Carl Saff, the result is a record that feels more like a full extension of the band’s creative intentions than ever before.

“Through Zero” is a term borrowed from engineering and the world of music," DiSalvo reveals. "It describes the property of a frequency being able to pass through the zero point and continue into the negative. While it isn’t a concept rooted in philosophy, it resonates with me on a conceptual level: the zero point is not an end, but a midpoint along a partially unseen path. Interpretation is open: the journey is the destination, beginnings and endings may be arbitrary, or perhaps reality is simply less linear than we tend to assume.

The songs on the album explore related themes that reflect my own observations and personal philosophy. Life and death, frustration and fear, helplessness and hope - all of these exist along the same “signal path.”

As usual, we’re late to the party. I’m pretty sure Jack Harlon & The Dead Crows invited us before, and I hope we RSVP’d. But even though I am sure we were at one of their shindigs and The Magnetic Ridge album even made it to the Number 6 spot of the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2021, we can’t remember being this enamored and blown away by their music. The new Inexorable Opposites album, officially released through Magnetic Eye Records on February 6, sounds like the work of a couple of boys who’ve been searching for the fabled crossroads on every dreary midnight and finally found it… 

And as they rode away, twenty-one grams lighter, lightning flashing in the distance, that electric edge of a world half made, half imagined on Inexorable Opposites, blurs the line between mythic outlaw and the man behind the gun even more. Eight tracks surging like that desert storm, where opener Moss immediately roars like a horizon split by fire and the final To Die drifts like sun-bleached bones beneath a vast and indifferent sky. 

The devil does not care. He also does not forget. But with new drummer Brayden Becher driving the gallop, they might just stay ahead of him. They sound larger, heavier and alive with the chaos of creation itself. The drums and the scars, it’s what holds this record up to the light where the guitars can shine and burst alight with holy fire. For even though the songwriting feels like a reckoning and a map, stitched together from personal trauma, there is always the spectral weight of the imagined Jack. No sympathy for the devil, keep that in mind…

It’s a journey away from the crossroads, through all the wreckage and the ruin, and ultimately beauty, where every riff becomes a brush with violence and transcendence, with dark fire and glimmering light. And as those contrasts envelope you, the atmosphere ever more grandiose, you will find out the relentless motion of the album has brought you back to those dark bottomless eyes, they see you, they see your soul. And as you stare into that sun-scorched void, you suddenly feel  yourself surrounded by a serene form of tranquility, escape remains possible, everything remains possible…

The Devils - Time Is Gonna Kill Me

Their third album Beast Must Regret Nothing (2021) was produced by Alain Johannes (Eleven, QOTSA, Them Crooked Vultures, Chris Cornell, PJ Harvey) and includes a featuring with Mark Lanegan. And the fifth track on that wild The Devils album is Time Is Gonna Kill Me. Wild, just like their entire performance at Maximum Festival 2022 near Venice, Italy. Which was recorded as their live album Live at Maximum Festival. The duo from Naples embodies the ultimate sound of chaos; their style is primitive, loaded with sex, sin and Rock’n’Roll!

The band on "Time Is Gonna Kill Me": "There is no poetic content in our music. Actually this song says that we don’t kill time, but time is gonna kill us. The music is inspired by Otis Rush blues, who clearly explained that ‘Someone promises you the world and then gives you nothing: that’s the blues.'".

It’s Friday. And there’s always something special about Friday. Right? Not just because there might be a Friday Freebie going on over at the Doom Charts or because Bandcamp is waving fees again. No, it’s because we’ve been indoctrinated over the years with Friday being the end of the week. The end of work, toil and strife. The beginning of party time! Excellent! Well, since we’re talking about partying and good times, let’s just add Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday to that list as well! Carelessly and nonchalant just put it right there besides all those other good times to be had. It’s just something extra, something good and something well meant. For there is so much good and heavy music being released every day! And we know, we know, the albums and bands deserve more than the few words we will jot down here. More attention and more of our time! But there is so much out there and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. The Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! Missicks – A Coffee With The Devil

Missicks, I already love the name. The four hail from Curitiba, Brazil and bring you some damn tasty stoner rock. Stoner pop. It’s the stoner in robot pop form that conquered the world as of 2002. Well, you know where it originated, you know what band will probably be its main influence. But there’s more here; cause they have this high pop sensible undercurrent flowing, just listen to their earlier single Lust River. It’s good. And I’m always up for A Coffee With The Devil…

Principe Valiente - Porcelain

For some weird and possible insane reason Principe Valiente’s new single Porcelain reminded me of the Daniel Davies version of the Pixies track Wave Of Mutilation, which I often have on repeat for an entire night when the whisky is flowing and I honestly believe that the crap I’m typing might be any good. Usually isn’t when daylight arrives. Porcelain, the first track to the new album Barracades, which will be released somewhere in March 2022, on the other hand is! Dark wave, noir pop, post punk, shoegaze brilliance! Don’t let it shatter…

It will be released tomorrow. The debut self-titled album by the Wooden Fields trio. Featuring guitarist Sartez Faraj from Three Seasons, Mouth Of Clay. Siena Root bassist Sam Riffer and Fredrik Jansson Punkka from Witchcraft, Angel Witch & more on the drums. So indeed, a veritable who is who from the Swedish heavy rock scene and this of course immediately promises a lot for the debut release. It delivers the goods without a doubt, but perhaps due to the high expectations, not completely. We are treated to seven compositions that will surely transport you to the seventies and not only that, but often to a more soft-spoken Jimi Hendrix concert, where you are sure to ride your dirt-bike around the rings of Saturn and then take a breather on a colorful shag carpet. It’s fuzzy, bluesy, soulful and electric. Vintage by default, the bopping rhythms, the soulful vocals and damn tasty guitar work are there to bring an ode to nostalgia. Three cats that that know what they want to do and what to bring; but did not manage to capture lightning in a bottle out there in the fields. Out there in the Wooden Fields… This time around…

Kadabra hails from Spokane, Washington and is considered to be the new band on the block. Already signed to the incredible Heavy Psych Sounds, the debut album Ultra was released a big week ago and it’s one of the albums that have been on heavy rotation over here when the past hellish months of all work and no play were here. It’s one of the albums that pulled me through on those long nights of work, already dreading the early morning to come. For the glorious fuzz presented by the Kadabra three is classic in every sense of the word. It is that seventies approach, that proto attitude to doom that will immediately heat you up and warm your blood. Soon enough the sound becomes this slow burning soul igniter, this repeat and hypnotize form of heavy psychedelics that will immediately conjure up certain images. But, this time around, we’re not performing rituals on sacrificial slabs, no, cause the excellent vocals and lyrics takes us in a different direction and one that is much welcomed. With no resume or socials to speak off, Heavy Psych Sounds took a chance purely on the demo’s they heard. Which is only logical when you hear Ultra. Kadabra’s debut is one of the best debuts of the year and one of the best albums period. Welcome to the heavy fold Kadabra!
