Introducing SpiritWind Women’s Hand Drum Group

The name Spirit Wind represents the importance of giving thanks for our breath. Multi-talented artists, singers, song-writers and dancers. Michele Perpaul, Amy Desjarlais, and Tania Cordoba come together to share traditional and social hand-drum songs through stories, drum, voice and shakers.

This style of singing brings womxn from all over Turtle Island together and offers them an opportunity to practice and live spirituality in traditional as well as non-traditional settings. Women’s hand drum social singing is a relatively new tradition, however the drum itself has been acknowledged as the heartbeat of Mother Earth since time immemorial. The drumbeat reminds of our relationship and connection to Creation.

Drumming Above the City

Spirit Wind and the team from Indigenous Initiatives in the Toronto Metropolitan University’s Office of the Vice-President Equity and Community Inclusion hosted a drum circle on August 27 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for Drumming Above the City on the DCC rooftop (288 Church St). Offered in partnership with Rebirthed Teachings, and the Indigenous Foodways Program & Medicine garden, the space which is wheelchair accessible welcomed folx from the TMU community. At each Spiritwind drum circle community members are invited to bring your own hand drums and join in the drum circle. There are usually a few extra hand drums on hand for those who do not have one.

Please see the link to the Toronto Star story “Midwifery comes of age in Ontario” which includes a photo of the woman who gave birth while Amy and Jenny were singing upstairs for the Honouring Indigenous Women Book launch and fundraiser!

So beautiful to see mother and son in the photo, a great honour to be able to sing a welcoming song to the new little one.
