I have configured these fonts for NEdit:

nedit.textFont: -adobe-courier-medium-r-normal--12-*-*-*-*-*-*
nedit.boldHighlightFont: -adobe-courier-bold-r-normal--12-*-*-*-*-*-*
nedit.italicHighlightFont: -adobe-courier-medium-o-normal--12-*-*-*-*-*-*
nedit.boldItalicHighlightFont: -adobe-courier-bold-o-normal--12-*-*-*-*-*-*

What are the closest replacements to use for XNEdit?
Can I maintain a nedit.rc that works for both NEdit and XNEdit?

I'm not sure, I guess if there is an Adobe Courier TTF font, it would be the closest. It is hard to compare bitmap fonts with vector fonts. I think you have to try different fonts and see what looks good for you.

A single nedit.rc for both nedit and xnedit will not work, because of the font settings. Xnedit also has some more settings, which would be lost, everytime the settings will be saved in nedit. Because nedit and xnedit have separate config directories, you can run both in parallel (just not with synced settings)

Really? Currently it seems that xnedit starts with nedit's (font)
      settings.

xnedit reads its configuration from .xnedit, while the classic does from .nedit.
