Screen saver issues on Vista 64

Hello

Running on Windows Seven 64 bits
I Installed Karsten. Then I added pictures. I decided to test screen saver. I saw that the pictures were displayed at 100% so I changed the zoom setting. Then I discovered that setting was picture / picture so selected all pictures and I changed zoom setting and checked that I had the effect I wanted. Then forgot about it. Next time I looked Karsten Screen Saver had started (one of my pictures was being displayed) and I had an error. "Karsten screen saver cannot start. Please check that the application is installed properly. {6eb78410-07f2-1104-a7e5-000084812410}" (but exact number may be wrong). I had to use Ctrl+Alt+Del to reach the Windows login screen. I reset the screen saver to my previous one. Then I decided to reboot and do another test. But I could not find the Karsten screen saver in the Windows screen saver combo. I tried to uncheck it from Karsten but I got an exception.

I then tried to copy KarstenScrSav.scr to System32. It appeared in the combo but did not work, so I removed it from System32. I am going to uninstall Karsten completely and reinstall it. I'll wait a few days before doing it in case there is something I can check before, for example in the registry.

karsten refuses to start on windows vista (EOleSysError exception).

Zoom Mode doesn't get set when loading a kbs file

On version 3.5.0.0. When loading a slide collection (.kbs), the Zoom Mode (e.g. Proportional Zoom) doesn't get set -- the slide show always displays images and videos at their original sizes, this even though 'Proportional Zoom' shows up as selected in the Folder Properties. The Zoom Mode gets set correctly only when manually *changed* in the Folder Properties. An example kbs used for testing is attached.

some thumbnails may be blank

in the thumbnail view (collection window) some blank thumbnails may appear although the picture displays correctly in the preview pane as well as the slide show. the pattern of affected files is not deterministic.

heavy cpu load in fullscreen slideshow

the fullscreen slideshow mode generates 100% cpu load although the actual rendering of the slideshow obviously would require only a small fraction of that time. the windowed slideshow modes are not affected.

questions: does this depend on hardware? OS configuration? other installed software?

a/v when deleting multiple items in thumbnail view

when deleting multiple items in the thumbnail view, an error message "access violation in module karsten.exe" may pop up, and closing the popup window will instantly bring up another one.

this bug will be fixed in the next release (no date planned yet). until then, use the list or details views to delete items, only.

it is possible to save and close a modified collection even after the error occurred: try to press alt+F4 multiple times as quickly as possible (note: this may also close other application windows).

german translation files not properly installed

the german translation does not work because the german translation files are installed in the wrong folder.

this bug will be fixed in the next release (no date planned yet). until then, the problem can be fixed manually by a user with write access to the karsten program folder:

in the karsten program folder create three nested subfolders: locale\de\LC_MESSAGES and move all .mo files to the LC_MESSAGES folder.

karsten should automatically switch to the german user interface on german operating systems. german can also be selected by setting the environment variable "LANG" to "de".

screen saver configuration in karsten does not work

the screen saver configuration dialog (slide show ->
screen saver) does not activate the karsten screen saver.

it does, however, set the desired slide collection,
once karsten screen saver has been configured.

as a workaround: find karstenScrSav.exe under program
files. right-click on it and choose Install.

this bug was observed on windows XP SP2.

desktop properties dialog cannot start screen saver

in the windows screen saver configuration dialog
(desktop -> properties -> screen saver), the preview or
the configuration may not work, and display an error
message "cannot start server" after some time has elapsed.

nevertheless, the screen saver is properly activated
after the screen saver timeout.

as a workaround: open the collection that you want the
screen saver to display normally under karsten, and use
the view -> screen saver menu item to set the
configuration.

recent files menu messed up by multiple collection windows

the recent files menu is not aware of multiple
collection windows.
