1996: After achieving commercial success in the late 1970s and early 1980’s, Warren Zevon’s career took a host of twists and turns. He battled alcoholism and obsessive compulsive disorder. He  also served as musical coordinator and occasional guitarist for an ad-hoc rock music group called the Rock Bottom Remainders, a collection of writers performing rock and roll standards at book fairs and other events. The group included Stephen King, Dave Barry, Matt Groening and Amy Tan, just to name a few. He occasionally filled in for Paul Schaffer as bandleader for David Letterman’s Late Night Show. And he continued to release albums and tour. This soundboard recording captures him in Laytonville on September 1, 1996, 3 decades ago today, on tour in support of his 1995 album, Mutineer.

I've seen Los Lobos live twice, on back to back nights in July 1989 as the lead in band for the Grateful Dead at Giants Stadium. Incredibly, the band did not join the Dead on stage either night, but the Neville Brothers sat in during Iko Iko on night 2!  

This soundboard recording captures Los Lobos during the Further Festival tour on August 4, 1996, 3 decades ago this very day.

Ratdog @ Furthur 1996 - Back To Back - #1: When Jerry Garcia passed away in 1995, the Grateful Dead's long strange 3 decade trip came to an unexpected end. The members of the band decided, at least temporarily, not to continue to play together out of respect for Jerry. They would change their minds in 1998 and reform as The Other Ones, and later play as the Dead and then as Further. In 1996 and 1997, however, they took a different approach to touring. The Further Festival made the rounds in the summer of those 2 years, a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Planet Drum, kindred spirits Hot Tuna and former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby, just to name a few. This soundboard recording captures Ratdog, and the Allstar Jam that ended each show, in Saratoga during the 1996 Furthur Festival on July 6, 1996, 30 years ago today. In addition to seeing Neil with CSNY in April 2000, I've seen him on 5 other occasions, 3 solo acoustic shows (1989, 1992 and 199), and 2 concerts with Crazy Horse, in Godfather of Grunge: mode in 1991 and a presentation of Greendale in 2004. You never quite knew what you would get when you went to see Mr. Young.

On June 20, 1996, Neil Young launched a European tour with Crazy Horse, his first series of live shows with his long time backing band in about 5 years.  This soundboard recording capturs him during that run, in Finland, on June 28, 1996, 3 decades ago today.

Bruce Hornsby - 1996-05-21 - Northampton, MA (SBD)

For Bruce Hornsby, the year 1996 marked the 10th anniversary of the release of his Grammy Award winning debut album, The Way It Is. Rather than look backward, however, Hornsby continued to find ways to push his musical style forward. The cover of his recently released album, Hot House, featured an imagined jam session between bluegrass legend Bill Monroe and jazz legend Charlie Parker, two genres of music that Hornsby incorporated into the songs on that disc. The album also featured guest appearances by such diverse artists as Bela Fleck, Pat Metheney and the late Jerry Garcia. During this period, Hornsby's concerts took on a more improvisational tone, as he often took requests from the audience, rather than work from a set list. He would challenge himself to find ways to seamlessly string together diverse requests, turning the album versions of songs into more complex arrangements. As he says on his website, "I think of my songs as living beings that evolve and change and grow through the years." In his continuing quest to grow and evolve his music, Hornsby also participated in the Furthur Festival in the summer of 1996, one of the many Grateful Dead family endeavors launched in the wake of the death of Jerry Garcia. His band played along with Bob Weir & Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Mystery Box, Hot Tuna, Los Lobos and others. This soundboard recordinmg captures Hornsby a few weeks before th Furthur tour, in Northampton on May 21, 1996, 3 decades ago today.  His focus on collaborating with diverse artists is evident as he gets some help from Jimmy Herring, Kofi Burbridge and John Molo during the show.

1990s - #6: In rapid succession in 1995 and 1996, Graham Parker released the albums, 12 Haunted Episodes and Acid bubblegum.  AllMusic noted that the former was an artistic rebirth for Parker, boasting a quiet set of intimate songs about simple, domestic concerns that had tenderness, even when he was bitter.  In contrast,  they noted that the latter blasts out of the speaker with the snarly rage that distinguished his seminal late '70s albums that unfortunately often sounds like a parody of classic Parker instead of an inspired return.  This soundboard recording captures Parker on tour in support of both discs, in Philadelphia, on March 22, 1996, 27 years ago today.

Gov't Mule 1996 - Back to Back - #1: In 1994, Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody of The Allman Brothers launched a side project called Gov’t Mule. Haynes and Woody, who were fans of power trios such as Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, recruited Matt Abts to handle the drums. The new band, affectionately known to its fans as The Mule, released their self titled debut album in October 1995. Launched in 1993, the Phoenix Festival was positioned as an alternative to the established Glastonbury and Reading Festivals. It was held at Long Marston Airfield near Stratford-upon-Avon and was one of the first four-day festivals in Britain. Unfortunately, the festival was plagued with issues with crowd control, prcing, staffing and the location, an old airfield.  The final nail in the coffin cam in 1996 when issues with security caused thousands to miss David Bowie's set on July 18, 1996, 29 years ago today.  The festival lasted one more year, then folded in 1998.  In any event, while ticket holders may have missed Bowie, yiu won't as this FM boradcast captures his entire set.

In 1996, the Loreley Festival expanded to 2 days, and scored its biggest name to date when David Bowie closed the first day, on June 22, 1996, 29 years ago today, as captured in this soundboard recording. Just a few weeks earlier, on June 4, Bowie had launched the Outside Summer Festivals Tour at the famed Budokan Hall in Tokyo. The tour was in support of the album Outside, which had been released in late 1995 and marked the first time Bowie had worked with Brian Eno since the 1970s. The tour would run until July 21 and encompass 27 shows in Asia and Europe.

1990s - #4: In May 1996, Elvis Costello released his 17th studio album, entitled All This Useless Beauty, which was his final disc with his long time backing band, The Attractions. To promote the album Costello hit the road full force, not only playing concerts but also also making TV appearances, playing live on several morning radio programs and even playing several "secret" unannounced gigs. Attractions' pianist Steve Nieve backed Costello for the tour.  This FM broadcast captures Elvis during that run, in Chicago on May 18, 1996, 29 years ago today.

Bruce Hornsby - 1996-05-14 - Louisville KY (SBD)

1990s - #3: For Bruce Hornsby, the year 1996 marked the 10th anniversary of the release of his Grammy Award winning debut album, The Way It Is. Rather than look backward, however, Hornsby continued to find ways to push his musical style forward. The cover of his recently released album, Hot House, featured an imagined jam session between bluegrass legend Bill Monroe and jazz legend Charlie Parker, two genres of music that Hornsby incorporated into the songs on that disc. The album also featured guest appearances by such diverse artists as Bela Fleck, Pat Metheney and the late Jerry Garcia. During this period, Hornsby's concerts took on a more improvisational tone, as he often took requests from the audience, rather than work from a set list. He would challenge himself to find ways to seamlessly string together diverse requests, turning the album versions of songs into more complex arrangements. As he says on his website, "I think of my songs as living beings that evolve and change and grow through the years." In his continuing quest to grow and evolve his music, Hornsby also participated in the Further Festival in the summer of  1996, one of the many Grateful Dead family endeavors launched in the wake of the death of Jerry Garcia. His band played along with Bob Weir & Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Mystery Box, Hot Tuna, Los Lobos and others. This soundboard recording from Loisville from May 14, 1996, 29 years ago today captures Hornsby during that innovative period in his career.
