Gov't Mule 1996 - Back to Back - #1: In 1994, Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody of The Allman Brothers launched a side project called Gov’t Mule. Haynes and Woody, who were fans of power trios such as Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, recruited Matt Abts to handle the drums. The new band, affectionately known to its fans as The Mule, released their self titled debut album in October 1995. This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in support of their first disc, opening for the Black Crowes, at the Beacon Theatre in New York  on October 30, 1996, 29 years ago today.  Download this one then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back to Back entry.

Grateful Dead - 1971-10-29 - Cleveland, OH (SBD) 

GD 1971 - Back To Back - #1: When the Grateful Dead embarked on a late fall tour in 1971, they had a new addition to their live performances. Keyboardist Keith Godchaux played his first show with the band on October 19, filling in for Ron “Pigpen” McKernan who was ill, then quickly became a full time member. Keith’s wife Donna Jean would join the band the following year. The band also had some new material as they debuted future classics such as Brown-Eyed Women, Jack Straw, Tennessee Jed, “Comes A Time, Ramble On Rose, Mexicali Blues, and One More Saturday Night during this tour. In addition, the Dead used the tour as part a well planned strategy to publicize the band. They had just released their self titled double live album, better known as Skull & Roses, and had secured $100,000 (a hefty sum for the time) to promote the disc. As they often did, the Dead took an out of the box approach for their publicity campaign. Rather than spend the money on advertising, they instead used the dollars to broadcast 15 shows on their fall tour between October 19 and December 31. Rarely in rock history has such a concentrated series of live broadcast ever taken place to promote a band and a album. Often times the broadcasts lasted 5 or 6 hours, as in addition to the Dead's 2 set show, the opening act, the New Riders of The Purple Stage, also was aired live. Incredibly, Jerry Garcia usually sat in with the Riders before his show with the Dead. You can find more detail on these historic broadcasts here at the blog Lost Live Dead. Los Lobos 2001 - Back To Back - #1: Incredibly in 1998, less than a dozen years after their commercial breakthrough with the album By The Light Of The Moon and their cover of La Bamba, Los Lobos were dropped by Warner records. The band, by the way, had not been resting on their laurels. In 1995, they released the critically acclaimed children's album, Papa's Dream. That same year, Los Lobos won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for the tune Mariachi Suite. Unfortunately, mixed reviews for the album Colossal Head, released in 1996, led to their dismissal by Warner. In 1999, the band signed with Hollywood Records and released the album, This Time, This soundboard recording captures them on tour in support of that disc, in Austin on October 27, 2001, 2 dozen years ago today. Macca 2023 - Back To Back - #1: In the Spring of 2022, Sir Paul McCartney brought his Got Back tour to the United States, his first series of live concerts since the COVID pandemic. The tour's title was both a play on words on the tune Get Back, and a declaration that he had returned, ready to continue to dazzle audiences around the world with his live performances. Then, in fall 2023, Sir Paul took the Got Back tour to Australia and South America. This IEM recording captures McCartney on on night 1 in Sydney, Australia on October 27, 2023, just 2 years ago today. Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Back set. By the way, the highlight of every show of the Got Back tour was I Got A Feeling, where using clips from the recent Get Back TV special and an isolated vocal track from the 1969 Rooftop show, Sir Paul did a a virtual duet with John Lennon.

Sheryl Crow 2009 - Back To Back - #1: In 1986, Neil and his then wife Peggy founded the Bridge School, to help children with severe speech and physical impairments. The cause was personal for the couple as their son Ben is afflicted with cerebral palsy.  Every year from 1986 to 2016, with the exception of 2017, Neil and Peggy hosted the Bridge School Benefit Concert in Mountian View to raise funds for the foundation. Sheryl Crow took the stage at those concerts on 3 occaisons - 1999, 2009, and 2015.  This excellent audience recording captures her performance on day 1 in 2009, on October 24, 2009, 16 years ago today, Download this one, then come back tomorrow for day 2.

Unfortunately, the reunion was short lived. After a brief Spring 2011 tour, the three went their separate ways again, which may finally spell the end of Buffalo Springfield.

Buffalo Springfield 2010 - Back To Back - #1: Stop children, what’s that sound? Everybody look what’s going down. The sound – legendary tunes such For What Its Worth, Nowaday's Clancy Can’t Even Sing, Kind Women and Mr. Soul being played live. What was going down – well, it was history in the making, a sight most rock fans thought they would never again see, as Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay took the stage together. “We're Buffalo Springfield, thank you very much” proclaimed Young. Forty two years had passed between the last time the Springfield had played a concert on May 5, 1968 and their reunion show (sans original members Bruce Palmer and Dewey Martin, who passed away in 2004 and 2009, respectively) on October 23, 2010, 15 years ago today, at Neil’s annual Bridge School Benefit. To put that in perspective, when that 1968 concert took place, vinyl albums still ruled and recorded cassette tapes were just 2 years old. The show itself occurred in between the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy. Baseball still had 2 leagues with no divisions. In football, the AFL and NFL were rival leagues, and Super Bowl III, where the Jets beat the Colts leading to the merger of the 2 leagues, was still months away. Ivy League schools had yet to admit women. The Vietnam War still raged and the USSR and the Communist Bloc nations posed the greatest threat to the security of the United States. Man had yet to orbit or walk on the moon. The introduction of Mattel’s Hot Wheels cars, the launch of the motion picture ratings guide (G, PG, R, etc) and the debut of 60 Minutes on television would not happen until later in 1968. The Beatles were still together, and just about to launch Apple. Clapton was still part of Cream. Jimi and Janice were still alive, Elvis had yet to make his comeback, and Woodstock was still over a year away. Yes, much  changed in the 4 decades between Buffalo Springfield performances but one thing did not. Their music is still among the finest ever recorded and it still resonates with audiences today as strongly as it did in the 1960s. Beach Boys 1966 - Back To Back - #1: In May 1966, The Beach Boys released the album Pet Sounds, which would eventually climb to #10 on the Billboard charts.  The disc was in many ways a Brian Wilson solo album, almost entirely written, composed arranged and produced the the group's leader.  A departure from the surf and cars on the band was know for, the disc represented Wilson's first attempt at creating the greatest rock album ever made.  The disc also sparked dissension in the band, as members questioned everything from the sound and the lyrics of the album, as well as the direction Brian was setting for the band.  It was a foreshadowing of what was to come to following year, when Brian began recording Smile, the album which would almost destroy the band and would drive him to have a nervous breakdown. Despite the internal disagreements over the disc, Pet Sounds was a critical and commercial success for the band. Rolling Stone ranked the album at #2 on its listof the 500 greatest albums of all time.  Two singles from the album cracked the top 10 - Sloop John B at #3 and Wouldn't It Be Nice at #8, while God Only Knows charted in the top 40.  In addition, Good Vibrations, recorded during the Pet Sounds sessions but released as a stand alone single on October 18, 1966, climbed all the way to #1. Fleetwood Mac - 1982-10-20 - Oakland, CA (SBD Matrix)

Fleetwood Mac 1982 - Back To Back - #2: As the 1980s began, Fleetwood Mac sought to return to the glory days of Rumours. Their last album of the 1970, Tusk, was perceived as a failure, despite selling 4 million copies as a double album, primarily because it didn’t reach the same heights as Rumours. In contrast, their 1982 disc, Mirage, was a huge success for the band spending 5 weeks at #1 on the Billboard charts and certifying Double Platinum. The disc yielded 3 hit singles - Hold Me which went to at #4 on the Billboard charts, Love in Store went to #22, and Gypsy, which reached #12. Videos for Hold Me and Mirage received extensive airplay on MTv. The band launched a short tour in support of the album playing dates in 29 cities in the US. Elton 2018 - Back To Back - #1: In September 2018, Elton John launched his final tour, aptly named Farewell Yellow Brick Road, a play on words on the title of his #1 album and single from 1973. Due to the pandemic, the tour stretched over 5 years, encompassing more than 300 shows, across 3 continents, before coming to an end in Sweden in July 2023. I saw Elton early on in that tour, in November 2018 at Madison Square Garden.  It was a bittersweet moment  since my very first concert has been Sir Elton at that very same venue in August 1976. In fact, I dediciated an entire chapter to it in my book. In any event, this soundboard recording captures Elton during the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, just about 2 weeks before I saw him, on October 18, 2018, 7 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Back set.

Neil Young - 1986-10-17 - Minneapolis, MN (SBD)

Neil 1986 - Back To Back - #1: Neil Young, unlike The Who, The Stones and Pink Floyd,  didn’t vanish for a good chuck of the 1980s - it only seemed that way! In 1979, Neil was at the top of the rock world, as he was honored as artist of the year for his album Rust Never Sleeps. The disc, which is clearly some of Neil's finest work, was also recognized as album of the year. Yet, on the heels of that masterpiece, Neil would enter one of the least productive periods of his career. To put it mildly, the early 1980's were not the best of times musically for Neil Young. After signing on with Geffen Records, he released a series of albums that were baffling to fans and critics alike. From Trans in 1982, an experiment in electronic music, to Everybody's Rockin' in 1983, a rockabilly album with the Shocking Pinks, to Old Ways in 1985, a country music disc, Neil's run of releases were hardly the stuff folks had come to know and love. In fact, his own record label sued him for making music that was "unrepresentative of himself". By late 1986, Neil finally began to emerge from this experimental stage of his career, reuniting with Crazy Horse for Live In A Rusted Out Garage tour. With the Horse at his side, Neil again was stomping around on stage, playing the fierce, ragged, searing music that had become his hallmark, as evidenced in this soundboard recording from Minneapolis from October 17 1986, 39 years ago today.
