1993: Someone must have had a premonition when they asked a then relatively unknown band to fill in for Van Morrison, who skipped his own induction, at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame ceremony on January 16, 1993. Later that year, the band released the album August & Everything After, which went to #4 on the Billboard charts in the strength of such songs as Mr. Jones, Round Here and Rain King. The Counting Crows had arrived. This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in in support of their stunning debut disc, in San Francisco, on September 17, 1993, 33 years ago today. By the way, the set includes a cover of Mr. Morrison's Caravan, the same tune they played at the Rock Hall ceremony.

Crowded House - 1987-09-17 - Mansfield, MA (SBD)

1987: In August 1986, Crowded House released their self titled debut album, which garnered only limited attention initially. In December 1986, however, the 4th single from the album, Don't Dream It's Over, became a huge hit, climbing to #2 on the Billboard charts and carrying the album up to #12. The follow up single, Something So Strong, also became a top 10 hit in the US, reaching #7 on the Billboard charts. This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in support of that first album, in Mansfield, on September 17, 1987, 39 years ago today.

Jerry Garcia Band - 1989-09-16 - Hoffman Estates, IL (SBD)

1989: In 1989, the Grateful Dead’s traditional East Coast tour started about a month later than normal. The Dead were having a variety of issues with concert venues that fall. For example, one traditional tour stop, Madison Square Garden in NY, was under construction, forcing the band to re-locate to the Byrne Arena in NJ. When the band arrived at the Byrne Arena in October, they turned the last night of their stay into one of the great shows of the decade, which was later officially released as the album, Nightfall Of Diamonds (I was lucky enough to be in the audience that night!). Another regular tour stop, Hampton VA, no longer wanted the band to play in their city due to crowd control issues, including having thousands of Dead Heads camping out days prior to the show. To circumvent the ban, The Dead booked themselves into the Hampton Arena under the pseudonym “Formerly The Warlocks”. They then played 2 shows for the ages, during which they brought back songs such as Death Don’t Have No Mercy and Attics of My Life, which hadn’t been played in almost 20 years! As a result of the delay in the start of the Dead’s tour, the Jerry Garcia Band stepped in to fill the gap and played several concerts in September. Fans that got to see any of those JGB shows got an early taste of the magic. The performances were so good that 4 from that tour - 9/1 and 9/2 in Maryland, 9/5 in Hartford and 9/6 in Long Island - have all been have been officially released. This soundboard recording captures Garcia on September 16, 1989, 37 years ago today, a with special guest Clarence Clemons. By the way, at one point, Garcia and Weir actually considered inviting Clarence to join the Grateful Dead as a full time member. According to Weir, it was in the early 1990s, right after Springsteen broke up the E-Street band (temporarily, it turned out). It might have worked, except that a couple members of the Dead “hated saxophones”. Go here to read more about how close Clarence came to being a Dead Head!

Music For Montserrat - 1997-09-15 - London, UK (TV SBD)

1997: In 1979, George Martin, the legendary producer of The Beatles, financed the building of a recording studio on the Island on Montserrat in the Caribbean From 1979 to 1989, about 70 albums were recorded there, including Synchronicity by the Police and Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits.  Unfortunately, in 1989, Category Four hurricane Hugo hit Montserrat, destroying almost 90 percent of all buildings on the island, including Martin's recording studio. Then, in 1995, the main volcano on the island, Soufriere Hills erupted, and once again the island was devasted. Martin then led an effort to stage a benefit concert to help rebuild the island. He assembled an all star cast of perfromers, all who had recorded on the island, including Carl Perkins, Phil Collins, Mark Knopfler, Jimmy Buffett, Sting, Elton John, Eric clapton, and Sir Paul McCartney.  For Perkons, it would be his last live performance prior to his death just a few months later in January 1998.  For McCartney, it was his first live performance in the wake of the death of hios wife Linda.  This TV soundboard recording captures the entire show, from the Royal Albert Hall in London, on September 15, 1997, 29 years ago today. Southside Johnny - 1980-09-15 - Cleveland, OH (FM)

1980: The New Jersey music scene rose to prominence in 1975 thanks to Bruce Springsteen. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were the 2nd most famous act to emerge from that scene. Their first three albums, I Don't Want To Go Home (1976), This Time It's For Real (1977), and Hearts Of Stone (1978), were filled with Stax R&B influences. All 3 discs were produced and arranged by Steve Van Zandt, the group's co-founder, who also played guitar in Springsteen's E Street band. Van Zandt's tune, I Don't Want To Go Home, became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. The band's repertoire also included The Fever, Talk to Me, This Time It's For Real, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, a wonderful cover of Sam Cooke's Having A Party, and the definitive version of Springsteen's Hearts of Stone. This FM broadcast captures them taking the Jersey sound to Cleveland on September 15, 1980, 46 years ago today.

David Bowie - 1990-09-14 - Lisbon, Portugal (SBD)

1990: On March 4, 1990, Bowie embarked on his Sound & Vision tour a run of shows built upon an unusual premise. The set list for the tour would feature a host of his greatest hits, which Bowie would then retire from all future concert performances. For fans, it would supposedly be their last opportunity to hear classics such as Suffragette City, Ziggy Stardust, Rebel Rebel and Changes, just to name a few, in concert. Fortunately, Bowie didn’t completely abandon his old material in future tours, but at the time no one was quite certain how serious he was about the claim. This soundboard recording Bowie on September 14, 1990, 3 dozen years ago today, in Lisbon during 2nd European leg of the tour.
