Sneaky the Library Cat Interviews Hank, the dachshund from Just Desserts and Murder by Lucinda Race

Hello, Mr. Dog. What is your name and your author’s name?

My name is Hank the dachshund and my author is Lucinda Race.

Tail wags to you both.

What book(s) have you appeared in? Please list them and their genre.

Cozy Mystery – Just Desserts & Murder, Cupcakes & Murder and Brownies & Murder.

Sounds yummy reading.

Are you in a series? If so, please give information about it.

I’m in the Temperance Matthews Cozy Mystery series, and woof, I’m pretty darn important too!

Good for you!

Are you based on a real dog such as your author’s? If so, please give further details.

Yes, my author had a mini dachshund, Jasper, whom she adored. Sadly, he was very old and passed away. This is her way of keeping Jasper alive and getting into mischief.

That makes sense. I’m based on Debbie’s Siamese Oliver who is now on Rainbow Bridge.

Can you share an excerpt from one of your books that features you in an important scene? If so, please include it.

The night was still except for Hank’s snorts. I heard my cell ring inside the house. Why had I come outside without it? Whoever was calling would have to leave a message.

Hank froze and stared at the far corner of the fence line closest to the driveway. A low, deep growl made him sound as if he was the size of a wolf. The hair on his upper back spiked, but he didn’t move.

I scooped him up. Holding him close to my chest, I murmured soothing words as I walked inside, closed and locked the door, and dialed 9-1-1. I hoped I wasn’t being paranoid, but Hank rarely acted like this, and when he did, it was for a good reason.

I glanced at my text messages and saw one from an unknown number. As I read it, my blood chilled. It was straight out of a movie.

Stop meddling, or your little dog will end up alone, in a shelter.

I held him tighter and gazed out the window above the kitchen sink. A flicker of yellow and orange brightened the corner as flames licked the fence’s slats. Right where Hank had growled. FIRE!

Without hesitation, I tapped the three digits and waited to be connected.

Pawsome! Thanks for sharing.

What do you like most about your role in your authors’ books?

I love the way she writes my character, my personality shines through.

That’s important.

Are you a talking dog in your books or just a silent one like I am who just meows occasionally?

I don’t talk in the book, but my eyes and mannerisms get the point across loud and clear.

Body language is so important.

What advice would you give other dog characters?

Be proud to be in the stories our authors create.

Excellent advice!

Do you have any new books coming out? Please give dates and details.

In Oak Hollow, every recipe comes with a dash of mystery…

Temperance Matthews thought opening her dream bakery in Oak Hollow—with her mini dachshund, Hank, at her heels—would be a sweet start to her new life. Instead, her shop goes up in flames, and a body is found among the ashes.

When her quiet assistant Louise shows up bruised, with twigs in her hair, and missing a shoe, Temperance’s data-analysis skills from her FBI days suddenly feel like the only hope of untangling the mystery. But the plot thickens: Jonah, the bakery’s former owner, is stabbed while trying to reach Temperance. The frosting on the cake? Louise’s boyfriend is the victim of the fire. Surveillance footage shows him entering through a locked back door—yet only three keys exist, and Louise doesn’t have one.

With threats mounting and the police closing in on a suspect, Temperance must follow a trail of half-baked clues before the real culprit turns her cozy little town into a crime scene… and who becomes the next target.

Just Desserts and Murder is book 1 in the exciting new Little Bakery Cozy Mystery Series featuring Temperance Matthews. Each book can be read as a standalone.

Sneaky the Siamese Interviews Duke, the Labrador Retriever from Christmas Conundrum by Stacy Wilder

Hello, Mr. Dog. What is your name and your author’s name?

Hi, Sneaky. My name is Duke. I’m P.I. Liz Adam’s truth sniffing Labrador retriever. Don’t worry. I like cats. One of my best buddy’s is a cat named Irish. My author’s name is Stacy Wilder.

That’s good to know, Duke. I like dogs, too. My friend, Fido, the golden retriever, stars with me in the Cobble Cove cozy mysteries.

What book(s) have you appeared in? Please list them and their genre.

I appear in every book in the Liz Adams Mystery Series, Charleston Conundrum, Carmel Conundrum (where I meet Irish), and A Christmas Conundrum. The stories are cozy mysteries. My author is currently working on the fourth book, Cayman Conundrum. Liz couldn’t solve a case without me!

Pawsome! I’m also in all the Cobble Cove books and also the stories that are in the latest collection, Sneaky’s Supernatural Mysteries and Other Cobble Cove Stories. One of these is a Christmas story, too. It won a special award from the Cat Writers’ Association. There are six books so far in the series.

Are you in a series? If so, please give information about it.

I am! The novels travel to tourist destinations. A Christmas Conundrum is a novella and is set in Liz’s hometown of Charleston. My author has plans for more novels and novellas in the series. Stay tuned!

Sounds great! I don’t travel much in Debbie’s books. The McKinney’s generally stay in the small town of Cobble Cove, and I live in the library there.

Are you based on a real dog such as your author’s? If so, please give further details.

My author has a Labrador retriever named Eve. She’s a communicator just like me. Although she can’t detect when people aren’t telling the truth, she howls the words ‘I love you’ for her breakfast in the morning. I can do that too.

Wow Meow! That’s incredible . . .  for a dog. I was based on my author’s late Siamese, Oliver, but I’m younger and will live as long as the books are published.

Can you share an excerpt from one of your books that features you in an important scene? If so, please include it.

The stories are told from Liz’s point of view. Liz and Brad, her new love interest, are inspecting a piece of property she recently inherited.

My hiking boots were brand new and weren’t my usual fashion statement, but I was grateful for them as we navigated the rugged terrain. Duke marked his territory along the way. Suddenly, Brad put his arm in front of me, halting my progress.

“Shh,” he whispered and pointed ahead.

When I spotted the mountain lion perched on a rock fifty yards down the path, my heart hammered in my ears. My whole body tensed. I yanked the leash tighter to my body and hoped that Duke didn’t spot the animal as his nose twitched at the smell in the breeze. Brad pulled the air horn out of his pocket and prepared to sound it if needed. The tawny feline’s paws were huge. I held my breath, trying to make as little noise as possible. As soon as the creature spotted us, Brad sounded the horn and the animal’s muscular body darted off into the trees. Duke barked, and I took in a deep gulp of air while gripping the leash tighter so Duke wouldn’t chase the big cat.

That’s lucky.”

After I’d released my breath, I said, “Lucky?”

“Yeah, you got to see a mountain lion. How cool is that? Probably a male. He was a decent size.”

“Let’s go back.” I was glad that I relieved my bladder before we left the house. Duke sensed my unease and whined.

“Trust me. That mountain lion is long gone. He’s way more scared of us.” Brad grabbed my hand. “Come on. You have to see your beach.

Purr-fect. Thanks for sharing that.

What do you like most about your role in your authors’ books?

Obviously treats. Oh, and getting to solve the mystery.

MOL (Meow Out Loud). Don’t get me started on treats. The library staff are very generous sneaking them to me.

Are you a talking dog in your books or just a silent one like I am who just meows occasionally?

I communicate in dog talk. I yip when someone is lying. I whine when something is up.

Good for you. I do the same with meows and hisses, but I now talk to readers and my fellow pet co-stars which is a lot of fun.

What advice would you give other dog characters?

Have a job. You can’t just sit on the cover and look pretty.

Excellent advice. We cats sit there and look pretty all the time.

Do you have any new books coming out? Please give dates and details.

Cayman Conundrum is in the works and is set to come out in 2024. My author is having a lot of fun with the plot.

I can imagine. Debbie enjoys dreaming up murders and things for me to do to help Alicia.

Sneaky the Library Cat Interviews Bailey, the Bloodhound from Sniffing Out Murder by Kallie E. Benjamin

Hi, there, Mr. Dog. What is your name and your author’s name?

My name is Bailey and I’m a bloodhound. My author’s pen name is Kallie E. Benjamin, but she’s really Valerie Burns. I don’t really understand why she is using a different name, but humans do some strange things.

That’s for sure. Tail wags to you, Bailey.

What book(s) have you appeared in? Please list them and their genre. Well, technically this is the first book that I’ve been in. It’s a cozy mystery called Sniffing Out Murder.

Condogulations!

Are you in a series? If so, please give information about it.

This is the first book in the Bailey the Bloodhound Mystery series. In the first book, Sniffing Out Murder, I work with my human, Priscilla Cummings. Pris is a school teacher, but she decided to write a children’s detective book about me, The Adventures of Bailey the Bloodhound, Pet Detective. Of course, my book was very successful, so Pris was able to quit her job and is now going to focus on writing about me.

Bloodhounds have exceptional noses which make us great for tracking scents and finding people. Pris says my nose gets her in trouble. But, it’s not my fault that someone murdered the mean woman who stepped on my tail and got into an argument with Pris. Then, they buried her in the park where I caught their scent. I mean, any bloodhound worth their salt could have picked up that trail. I’m not sure why anyone would believe Pris murdered her, but none of that was my fault. Still, I felt bad for my human, so I made a point of helping her figure out whodunit. After all, I’m Bailey the Bloodhound, Pet Detective.

Wow, Meow! I love it.

Are you based on a real dog such as your author’s? If so, please give further details.

My author loves dogs, but for some reason she has poodles. So, I’m not based on a real dog. My author did talk to a friend named Larissa who had a bloodhound named Bocephus. We share quite a few things in common, but I’m an original.

Of claws you are, as am I, even though I was originally based on Debbie’s Siamese who is now over the rainbow bridge.

Can you share an excerpt from one of your books that features you in an important scene? If so, please include it.

“Like any detective worthy of the title, Bailey knew that the only way to catch a criminal was to put his nose to the ground and sniff out the clues. With any luck, he’d pick up the scent quickly to help take a bite out of the crime wave hitting the city.”

I walked through the park reciting the lines out loud, letting the words marinate in my mind. It sounded okay, but it didn’t make my heart race with anticipation. Nancy Drew’s place within the annals of children’s crime fiction was secure. The first book in The Adventures of Bailey the Bloodhound, Pet Detective, series, The Case of the Missing Maltese, had flowed out of my head and onto the page like . . . well, like honey. This second book felt forced. I felt like I was scraping words out of my head with a dull spoon. I wouldn’t mind if I were digging out good words, but this draft certainly didn’t have the same zing as the first book.

Kids had loved the first book and were clamoring for more, but these eight-to-twelve-year-old middle-grade readers have high standards. They expect books to be well written, funny, and relevant, even if they can’t articulate that’s what they want. As a former elementary school teacher, or soon-to-be former teacher, I knew that kids could be exuberant with praise and brutal with criticism. My insecurities went into hyperdrive. What if I didn’t have any more books in me? What if I was a one-book wonder? “Ugh!”

With a strong tug on the leash, Bailey lurched me out of the pool of self-doubt where I was wallowing around like a baby seal. Bailey wasn’t keen on wallowing, unless it involved mud, freshly cut grass, or his favorite eau de parfum-deer poop. The best thing about a bloodhound was also sometimes the worst thing. They were Grade A scent hounds known for their tracking ability, especially when it came to tracking lost or missing humans. Usually bloodhounds, although large, substantial dogs, were docile creatures. However, whenever they were on the trail of a particular scent, they were unyielding and stubborn. Bailey, my three-year-old bloodhound, was no different. When he was working, he was all nose, but we weren’t working. This was supposed to be a casual walk. However, I could tell from the slight prick of his heavy ears, the wiggling nose that barely left the ground, and the pull on his leash that he’d picked up a scent and was determined to follow it to the end. I just hoped that he wouldn’t track anything that would get us both into trouble, again. Every time I see a flower bed, I’m reminded of Bailey covered in dirt and the look on my former neighbor Mrs. Goldstein’s face as her award-winning peonies were utterly destroyed. Bailey’s nose and my inquisitive nature could be a bad combination. However, I was determined to avoid trouble, especially around this town.

I gave his leash a gentle tug. “Come on, buddy. We’re not tracking anything today. We both need to keep our noses clean and avoid falling down any rabbit holes.”

Bailey pulled his nose from the ground and glanced back at me. His eyes said, I have no idea what you mean. My nose is always clean.

“Don’t give me that look. You know what I mean.”

He snorted and continued to sniff.

“I quit my job so I could write full-time and finish our next book, not so you could hound out trouble. No distractions. No mysteries. Nothing. We’re going to lie low and focus on writing. Besides, nothing ever happens in Crosbyville, Bailey.”

This time Bailey didn’t bother lifting his nose off the ground. He grunted and continued sniffing. I rolled my eyes.

Pawsome!

What do you like most about your role in your authors’ books?

I love that my author is recognizing my breed. We are an old and noble breed that was believed to have been bred by monks at the Saint-Hubert Monastery in Belgium in 1,000 AD. I like that I have an opportunity to show how useful we are in tracking down scents and bringing criminals to justice. I do important work.

Good for you!

Are you a talking dog in your books or just a silent one like I am who just meows occasionally?

I talk to my human, but she doesn’t seem to understand me. Sadly, she hasn’t learned to speak canine. So, she has to rely on my facial expressions, body language, and other cues to understand what I’m trying to tell her. It’s a lot of work getting her to understand. Sometimes, I have to go to great lengths just to get her attention. Eventually, she catches on, but it would be a lot easier if she would just learn to speak canine.

MOL (Meow Out Loud). I feel the same way about Alicia. While I am now communicating with my pet co-stars and readers, Alicia is still in the dark.

What advice would you give other dog characters?

If you have a human who doesn’t understand canines, like mine, don’t give up on them. It’s not their fault that they were never taught to be bilingual. If you’re patient, then you will be able to figure out ways to communicate with them.

Purr-fect advice.

Do you have any new books coming out? Please give dates and details.

My author writes other series under different pen names (there’s that pen name thing again). Sniffing Out Murder, is the first book featuring me. However, she recently released a book, Murder on Tour, as V. M. Burns. It’s the 9th book in her Mystery Bookshop Mystery series. It’s pretty good, even though there are no bloodhounds in it. That series just has poodles. My author also writes a Baker Street Mystery series. She uses her real name, Valerie Burns, for that one. The latest book, Murder is a Piece of Cake, released a few months ago. The third book in that series, A Cup of Flour, A Pinch of Death, will release in August 2024.

Boy, your author is a busy bee.

When a murder unleashes a widespread investigation through Crosbyville, children’s book author Pris and her trusty bloodhound, Bailey, must sniff out the truth before the whole town goes to the dogs.

After deciding that life as a teacher wasn’t right for her, Priscilla found inspiration for her first children’s book in her three-year-old bloodhound’s nose for truth, and so The Adventures of Bailey the Bloodhound was born. After the book’s massively pawsitive response led Pris to move back to her hometown of Crosbyville, Indiana, to continue the series, she’s surprised by how things have changed in the town, but even more so how they haven’t.

Pris is frustrated to discover that newly elected school board trustee Whitney Kelley—a former high school mean girl—is intent on making Crosbyville more competitive by eliminating “frivolous spending” on the arts and social programs, including Pris and Bailey’s beloved pet-assisted reading program. A minor altercation between them isn’t anything unusual, but after Bailey sniffs out Whitney’s body in a bed of begonias, locals start hounding Pris and Bailey as suspects for the crime.

With Bailey’s sharp senses and Pris’s hometown know-how, can they prove to the community that they’re all barking up the wrong tree?

Sneaky Interviews Dirty Harry from Cat House, A Crazy Cat Lady Mystery, by Mollie Hunt

Hello and Meow, Mr. Cat. What is your name and your author’s name?

Dirty Harry here. My friends just call me Harry. Are you my friend? Oh, and my author is Mollie Hunt, cat writer.

MOL (Meow Out Loud). My author has a cat named Harry. Debbie is also a friend of your author’s and a cat cozy mystery writer, too. It’s mice to meet you.

What book(s) have you appeared in? Please list them and their genre.

I’m front and center in all my author’s Crazy Cat Lady Cozy Mysteries, beginning with book one, Cats’ Eyes. Well, maybe not front and center in all ten of them, but I’m always there in my cubby by the TV or sitting on my human’s lap to dry off after a rain shower in the catio.

That’s pawsome. I’m also a key character in my author’s Cobble Cove cozy mystery series.

Please give information about your series.

The Crazy Cat Lady Cozy Mystery Series features Lynley Cannon, a sixty-something cat shelter volunteer who finds more trouble than a cat in catnip. She lives with me and the clowder—or I guess I should say we live with her in a big house in Portland Oregon. Humans think women her age are sedentary, but not Lynley. She’s attended an exclusive art retreat, chased ghosts during a television shoot, saved her mom from certain death in a cat café, broken up a cat counterfeiting ring, and of course helped to roust more than a few murderers.

What a spunky main character, you lucky kitty. Alicia, the librarian, is pretty spunky herself, but I am always happy to lend a paw helping solve the town’s mysteries.

Are you based on a real cat such as your author’s? If so, please give further details.

I am indeed the one and only Dirty Harry, but alas, I crossed the Rainbow Bridge some time back. Before that I lived with my author for many wonderful years.

Awww. I’m loosely based on Oliver, the Siamese, who was also a cat of Debbie’s but has been on Rainbow Bridge for six years now.

Can you share an excerpt from one of your books that features you in an important scene? If so, please include it.

Sure! Here’s one from the new book, Cat House, where everybody is celebrating my seventeenth birthday. BTW it has a little preview about the theme of the next book at the end.

“Is the birthday boy ready?” Carol called, emerging from the kitchen with a tray of nicely browned squares. Sprigs of parsley rested decoratively at each end.

“Ta-da!” she announced, placing the tray on the ottoman. “Home-baked tuna treats, all cooled off and ready to eat.”

Dirty Harry, awakened by the smell, gave a sniff, then another. Without further ado, he rose from my lap and stepped over to the fare. He licked at a particularly delicious-looking cracker, then began crunching enthusiastically.

“You’ve got a hit,” said Fredric, standing behind Seleia who was watching the old cat with unabashed love.

Carol beamed. “Maybe I should start making them commercially. I could sell them at the Pet Pantry. Homemade and organic? Small, senior woman-owned business? Why, that could be my new career.”

Harry seemed to agree, and as Carol passed out the treats to the other cats who had been drawn to the enticing scent, she received even more rave reviews.

Harry had finished his cracker and went hunting for more. Carol placed another in front of him, then retired the tray to a high shelf. “That’s enough for now, Harry. We don’t want you to yak all over your birthday gifts.”

“Speaking of…” I announced. “Seleia, will you grab that box from behind you?”

Seleia passed me the flat cardboard box. I removed the lid revealing a layer of white tissue paper. Pulling up a corner, I showed the humans the bounty.

“It’s a Treasure Box—toys, rattle balls, sparklies, and kicker pillows, all dusted with catnip. A volunteer at Friends of Felines makes them, and the proceeds go to the shelter.”

I tucked the tissue back in place and set the box on the floor. Harry was down to inspect it in a heartbeat. With unabashed enthusiasm, he clawed through the flimsy paper, rubbed against it, then rolled over in a kittenish fashion, one of the bright catnip kickers grasped between his paws. Everyone laughed to see the old cat playing like a kitten.

Harry picked out each toy in turn, then when all that was left in the box was a dusting of catnip, he stalked over to his favorite bed in the TV cabinet for a well-deserved nap, and the party was over.

Seleia and Fredric put on coats and retired to the garden to enjoy the moment of sunshine the Weather Kitty had promised. Carol, Frannie, and I sat in the remains of birthday chaos, talking about nothing in particular.

Finally Frannie rose and gathered her things.

“I’m sorry, Lynley, I have to take off. My quilting group is meeting in an hour, and I need to pick up some squares from the fabric store.”

“I didn’t know you were a quilter,” said Carol.

“Beginner. I do know how to sew, but I’ve never tried quilting before. A friend thought I might be interested in this group. They work exclusively on feline designs.”

“Cat quilting? That sounds like fun.”

“There’s still space open in the class,” Frannie hinted.

“Even if I could make it off this couch,” I replied, “there’s no way I’d be ready in an hour. But it does sound tempting.”

Frannie said her goodbyes and went off to the class. Carol slipped into the kitchen to clean up. Harry moved from his bed to my lap. I lay back on the couch pillows and closed my eyes. As I started to drift, I envisioned swaths of cat print fabric swirling like banners in the wind. Then they came together, a hand-stitched quilt with the center design of a beautiful black and white cat.

Excellent excerpt. Thanks for sharing it, Harry.

What do you like most about your role in your authors’ books?

That’s a sneaky question, Sneaky. I guess I appreciate my role as the rock of the story. “Role” and “Rock,” get it? But seriously, I am always there, ready to comfort, console, and generally make the world turn in our cozy little home.

Good answer.

Are you a talking cat in your books or just a silent one like I am who just meows occasionally?

I do not speak human, and I’m not overly psychic like my fur-sister Mab either. But don’t worry. I can communicate my wants and needs just fine.

Nice to know.

What advice would you give other cat characters?

Be gentle with your author. They work really hard to bring our stories to life.

I agree.

Do you have any new books coming out? Please give dates and details. We sure do! We are currently celebrating the release of the tenth Crazy Cat Lady mystery, the aforementioned Cat House. My author is already working on the next one, called Crafty Cat.

Wow, Meow! Your author is on a roll. I also know she won a Muse Medallion and special award from the Cat Writers’ Association recently. My author won a Muse, as well, for my short story, “Sneaky’s Supernatural Mystery” that appeared in her latest Cobble Cove book, Sneaky’s Supernatural Mystery and Other Cobble Cove Stories. We’re honored to be their cat characters.

Are you and/or your author on social media? If so, please list your links.

I don’t have time for all that stuff—too busy napping and overseeing the house—but my author does:

Sneaky Interviews Dep from Beyond a Reasonable Donut, A Deputy Donut Mystery by Ginger Bolton

Meow there, Kitty. Please introduce yourself to our readers.

My full name is Deputy Donut, but my person, Emily, usually calls me Dep. My author is Ginger Bolton.

Mice to meet you, Dep. What book(s) have you appeared in? Please list them and their genre.

SURVIVAL OF THE FRITTERS

GOODBYE CRULLER WORLD

JEALOUSY FILLED DONUTS

BOSTON SCREAM MURDER

BEYOND A REASONABLE DONUT

They’re all cozy mysteries.

Pawsome! I love cozy mysteries and am the main cat in the Cobble Cove cozy mystery series.

Are you in a series? If so, please give information about it.

Yes. The series is named after me—the Deputy Donut Mysteries. Emily co-owns a coffee and donut shop with Tom, the kind man who is the father of My-Favorite-Man-Who-Went-Away. And—get this—Emily and Tom named the little restaurant after me! Yep, it’s called Deputy Donut. They designed it with a special home for me, with windows to allow diners to admire me without touching me and maybe getting cat hair in their donuts and coffee. (People are wimpy like that, Sneaky. They should be brave like us. I mean, if you get a hairball, you can simply cough it up, right?)

Emily was a 911 operator, My Favorite-Man-Who-Went-Away was a detective, and Tom has retired as the police chief of our town, Fallingbrook, Wisconsin. Emily and Tom have many first responder friends, including Brent, who can come live with Emily and me any time. I’m afraid that My-Favorite-Man-Who-Went-Away is never coming back, and Brent is My-Favorite-Man-Who-Visits-Often. I try to show Emily that she should encourage Brent to move in with us so he can cuddle and pet me more, but she pretends to ignore me.

Lots of first responders spend time in Deputy Donut. They seem to know a lot about crimes, but bad guys sometimes come into our shop, too, and Emily can learn important things from all of them. If I don’t trust someone in the shop, I glare at them through my window and puff up to alert Emily. By paying attention to me and to everyone else in the shop and also by going out snooping with or without me, Emily solves crimes!

Wow, Meow! Your series sounds great.

Are you based on a real cat such as your author’s? If so, please give further details.

Ginger Bolton’s Grandcat, Wendy

My personality is based on my author’s cat, Lucy, from a long time ago. Reportedly, Lucy was the world’s most cuddly and talkative cat. She was a tabby, but I am a torbie, a combination tabby and tortoiseshell. One of author Krista Davis’s cats, a gorgeous and distinguished kitty, has modeled for my splendid appearance on book covers. Sometimes my author’s grandcat, Wendy, appears in photos, as in the one I’m sending you, Sneaky.

Interesting. I’ve never heard of a torbie. My author’s cat, Hermione, is a calico tabby. I wonder if there’s name for that. I’m Siamese and was based on Debbie’s cat, Oliver, who went to Rainbow Bridge 3 years ago. I’m glad that, as a character cat, I can live furever in Cobble Cove. Thanks for sending the photo. I’ll make sure to add it to this post.

Can you share an excerpt from one of your books that features you in an important scene? If so, please include it.

Here’s a scene from BEYOND A REASONABLE DONUT. I save Emily and her two best friends from a huge furry monster. And by the way, that monster was not adorable or cute or funny. Emily only thought that because he hadn’t attacked her. Which, may I say again, was thanks to me.

Dripping, Misty and I made our way back to the sun-warmed sand, walked across it, wrapped our towels around ourselves, and settled into our chairs. Dep clambered into my lap, closed her eyes, and purred loudly.

The other three of us sat quietly enjoying one another’s company. I almost dozed.

Something to my left jingled. With a joyful bark, a half-grown but very large puppy bounded toward us, his tongue lolling out the side of his mouth, which was stretched in a happy smile. He was mostly white with large black splotches. A lopsided white streak snaked up from his nose to the top of his fluffy, black head. His ears flopped and his paws were about the size of teacups. Despite his speed, he wore an adorably bewildered expression.

Dep leaped up and dug her claws into the towel—and into my legs. Arching her back, she made herself about twice her usual size. In case that wasn’t enough, she twitched her tail, flattened her ears, and hissed.

Spraying sand, the puppy put on the brakes exactly like a dog in a cartoon. A whistle sounded in the distance. The puppy turned around and scooted back toward the lodge. At first, his giant white plume of a tail was down near his back legs, but by the time I lost sight of him, his tail was high again and waving proudly.

We three humans laughed. The puppy had been very cute. “I guess you showed him, Dep,” I said. Still puffed up, she stared toward where he’d disappeared among trees. I had a feeling that, unlike us, Dep hadn’t found him either funny or cute.

Love it! Great job, Dep.

What do you like most about your role in your authors’ books?

I like my partnership with Emily. We depend on each other for comfort, cuddles, and security. Plus, she feeds me.

I feel the same about Alicia, but I also like all the other staff members at the Cobble Cove Library. I’m proud to be a library cat and a mystery sleuth.

Are you a talking cat in your books or just a silent one like I am who just meows occasionally?

I don’t speak like humans do, but I communicate with meows, yowls, chirps, purrs, and an assortment of unique sounds. Plus, there’s the puffing up to make myself look big and threatening.

I do the same with the human characters, but I reveal my thoughts to the other pet characters in our books and the readers, too. I started doing this in our first Cobble Cove story, Sneaky’s Christmas Mystery and have continued it through our latest book, No Gravestone Unturned.

What advice would you give other cat characters?

Pay attention and stay alert, even when you appear to be catnapping. Protect your person in creative ways if you need to. You don’t want to have to open cans by yourself.

MOL (meow out loud). Very good advice.

Do you have any new books coming out? Please give dates and details.

DECK THE DONUTS, Deputy Donut #6, October 26, 2021

Concats! I will be sure to have my author check that one out. Love the title.

Are you and/or your author on social media? If so, please list your links.

Thanks so much for cat chatting with me today, Dep, and best whiskers to you and Ginger on your new release and upcoming books in your series.

Authors, do you have a pet character who would like to be interviewed by Sneaky? If so, comment on this post or contact me at debbiewriter@yahoo.com.
