Who Keeps the Sheets? Why, Everyone Does

character sheet, google docs, shared docs

Delta poses an interesting question about who keeps character sheets – the DM or the player. There are pros and cons to either approach, although personally I lean towards letting the players keep their own character sheets. When I’m a DM, I always keep a one-page summary of all the PCs and their essential stats for use during games, so the physical sheet is not that important to me.

However, it is possible to get the best of both worlds using shared documents (Google docs is the one I use, but not the only solution available). Since most of our group’s gaming happens online, this works great – but you can use shared documents for face-to-face gaming as well, players can update their own shared character sheet before each session and print it out if they want a hard-copy to doodle on. If you just use a text document, no setup is needed, other than for the DM to allow both himself and the player to edit the shared document (easy to do in Google docs under the ‘share’ menu option for an individual document). You can allow as many or as few people you like to view or edit each shared document. I like to add a bit more structure to the character sheets. Here is an example, this shared Google doc character sheet is for 3LBB OD&D.

and here is a shared Google doc character sheet for Swords & Wizardry White Box.

For both sheets I used the ‘Get shareable link’ menu option in my Google drive, by default this allows anyone with the link to view the document, but not edit it. A player could use that option to share his own sheet with the DM, if he was reluctant to allow edit access. When starting my own games, I just provide the links to a blank character sheet (already in my drive) to each player, and let them edit it as needed.

Something I’ve been meaning to do for a while is update the B/X-format one-page character sheet for OD&D. I’ve finally done so, here is a PDF of the 3LBB OD&D character sheet. It is specifically tailored for those of you playing with just the three little brown books (3LBB), but it has plenty of open space and nothing prevents its use if you like to throw the Greyhawk Thief class in the mix, for example. You can also click on the image below.

AS&SH Character Sheet

I’ve always been a fan of one-page character sheets, the multi-page one in the Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea (AS&SH) box set is comprehensive but not something I want to hand to a new gamer or want to manage while I’m at the table myself. So I’ve tweaked the B/X-style charsheet I’ve been using and made a single-page character sheet for AS&SH. It has just the minimum amount information needed for play (hopefully I didn’t miss anything). What is neat about this format is that if you print it on two sides of a page, you can cut it down the middle to get two digest-size, double-sided sheets. What I like to do for pregens is add text to the PDF sheet using flpsed, then print it out (for those of you on Linux systems). Click on the link or image below to download it.

I love random character generators. As a DM, they are great for quickly generating a party for a spur-of-the-moment pickup game, or for that henchman or major NPC. Here are the old-school RPG character generators I know of, let me know if there are any more out there and I’ll add them to the list (updated 2025-06-04).

Simon Bull just released the official Delving Deeper character sheet, with art from Mark Allen (A4 version is the last link on that page, apparently the letter size is coming soon). Very nice!

Adding Text to PDF Character Sheets Using Flpsed

Handwritten character sheets can get messy after a few gaming sessions, sometimes I like to start fresh with a type-written character sheet. I don’t generally use proprietary software, and in any case spending lots of money on some Adobe software is not worth it for me just to edit non-fillable PDF documents. If you use GNU/Linux, there is a solution – flpsed.

Flpsed is a nifty piece of free software that allows you to overlay text onto postscript documents. What really makes it useful is a PDF import/export feature. The idea is to import your blank PDF character sheet, add text wherever you like, then either print directly from flpsed, or export to PDF and print that via a standard PDF viewer. Here is what it looks like with a completed character sheet (this is one of my son’s S&W Whitebox characters).

Flpsed CharsheetAdding text is just a matter of clicking on the document and typing. A box will surround the text as you type. When in this input mode, using the arrow keys will move the text box around in small increments, so you can position it wherever you like.

typing into document with flpsedExisting text can be edited by clicking on the text itself, when the box appears, you can edit what is inside it.  On Debian or Ubuntu Linux, you can install flpsed via a graphical package manager (Ubuntu Software Center or synaptic on Debian), or ‘apt-get install flpsed’ as root (use ‘sudo apt-get install flpsed’ on Ubuntu).

Note that this doesn’t make the PDF itself editable – it just allows you to add text to a non-fillable PDF document. But I’ve found it pretty useful for gaming.

Holmes Basic D&D and a New Character Sheet

Update: You can see play reports of some Holmes Basic D&D sessions I ran here.

holmes_basic_box

Like many kids in the late 70s, I started playing D&D with the Holmes Basic “Blue Box”. While the original copy I had is sadly no more, I was able to pick up a fairly cheap copy on EBay of the 3rd edition set, which includes  The rulebook (with chits instead of dice), the monochrome cover B1 module, and the Monster & Treasure Assortment. After reading through the rulebook, I was inspired to modify the character sheets I’ve previously posted just for Holmes Basic.  They have some changes to reflect the rules particular to this version of D&D, including the simplified encumbrance (which I really like, and may incorporate into my other games – tracking the exact weight of equipment and treasure is a fun-sucking exercise). As in OD&D, all weapons in Holmes do 1d6 damage, so their isn’t a need for a spot to list weapons and the damage they do, merely having them in the equipment list on the character sheet is enough.

There were some surprises with this set that I never noticed years ago. The rule allowing two attacks per round for light weapons (i.e. daggers) seemed out-of-place, given no variable weapon damage rules are presented.  I don’t ever recall playing with that rule, and I guess I’m not alone, a quick search revealed a consensus that this was probably an editorial error. The wording in places was rather confusing for what was supposed to be an introduction to D&D, examples would be the “Adjusting Ability Scores” section on page 6, and the detailed rules for throwing oil flasks. The example of play on page 40 doesn’t seem very useful – it glosses over surprise and combat, although in fairness it was probably just designed to show how the DM interacted with the party caller. Perhaps it was more useful in the 70s when these games were new and the use of a caller was more prevalent.Still, reading this version of Basic D&D will spark your imagination, it has a decidedly unique feel.

I would be remiss at this point if I did not mention the BLUEHOLME Prentice Rules, which present the Holmes Basic rules in a much more organized way. I have not read through these rules thoroughly yet, but for example the “Adjusting Ability Scores” section is more coherent in the BLUEHOLME rules, having been codified into a single table. BLUEHOLME is definitely worth a look if you want to play Holmes Basic again and want something a bit more accessible (and the PDF is pay-what-you-want). Here is the Holmes basic D&D character sheet, in PDF format:

Labyrinth Lord OEC Character Sheet

I couldn’t find one online, so I created a version of my Delving Deeper and Swords & Wizardry Whitebox character sheets for the Original Edition Characters (OEC) variant of Labyrinth Lord. Here is the download link: Labyrinth Lord OEC character sheet.

There are plenty of standard LL character sheets available online, but I think this one has more of an old-school feel than most, making it a good fit for use with OEC.

UPDATE: I also have a LL OEC character generator online.

I’ve been watching the development of the Delving Deeper OD&D clone (DD) with interest since it was announced. I even have a copy of Brave Halfling’s boxed set, which is not being offered anymore, but the reference rule PDFs are free in any case (UPDATE: the latest “stable” version of the Delving Deeper rules (v4) is available at the Immersive Ink forums.

I’ve recently joined a Delving Deeper play-by-post game and although not needed for the game itself, it made me think of a printable character sheet. There are a few referenced in the OD&D forums, but some of those are missing some essential bits of data (like alignment), and I wanted something digest-sized I could print double-sided. So I created one based on my Swords & Wizardry Whitebox character sheet. Here is the link to the resulting Delving Deeper character sheet.

Whitebox Character Sheet

I’ve used Kilgore’s Whitebox Character Sheets for a while. They have a great look and have all the necessary info. If you print them double-sided, you get a nice, digest-sized sheet.

Here is a whitebox character sheet that I made – after a simpler, old-style character sheet, but in the double-sided, digest format. What I do with a single-sided printer is print some copies, flip the printed pages and re-insert them into the feeder, then print again. I can then cut the letter-sized pages vertically down the middle, and the digest-sized pages will be appropriately double-sided.
