Ballet: Last night we went to see the premiere of Gentleman Jack by the Northern Ballet at Leeds Grand Theatre, based on famous local Anne Lister (a while back I went to a talk at University of York by the author of the TV series based on her diaries). I'd booked "secret seats" tickets as soon as I knew about the ballet so got allocated a couple in the balcony which was further than some from the dancers but gave a good view of all of the stage and how the choreography worked over it all. Unusual and apt to have three women principals and I liked the dances between men also.
It was one of the best things I've seen and I highly recommend it. I liked how it was distinctly Northern. Helped to have read the programme to see what they were doing in some scenes but it would have worked without.

I liked that the landscapes and places used on movable screens were recognisably local and walking and writing were major parts of the show. Some of the dance included rapper sword and the music had brass band sounds.

Book:
For my birthday I got Calling The Shots: A Queer History of Photography put together by Zorian Clayton, Lydia Caston and Hana Kaluznik with contributions from many others. 240 pages,
ISBN 9780500480960 Published by Thames and Hudson Ltd 17 October 2024.
The book is thematic - pictures of queer icons, by queer artists etc. with enough text to be useful but mainly giving space to the photos curated from a huge collection at the V&A. Made me happy.

Crossed over well with:
Audiobook:
A Queer Inheritance: Alternative Histories in the National Trust by Michael Hall, read by George Potts. Published 5 Feb 2026 by Bloomsbury Publishing, Duration 15 hours and 58 minutes, ISBN 9781448218356
Specific to the National Trust, so a subset of people and places, but also places that can be visited. Interesting perspective. Rather too many aristocrats, but that's who owned the houses.

We're seeing Gentleman Jack in Norwich in late May (so I have not read your spoilers), so I'm glad to hear it's good :)
