If the band's ambition was "just to" reproduce old melodic BM classics like Dissection and early Emperor, I'd say it is a grand success, shit even the cover art reminds me of the "Storm" album... However, I wish this album had a bit more personality to it. These guys are from the U.K., after all. The first half is majestic, the second half a bit less. Still it's a very enjoyable melodic BM album.

'Tis the season to scour the year-end lists in the hopes of scraping up the most evil albums of REAL black metal that I shamefully missed throughout the year, and Antinomian Asceticism is one that makes it all worthwhile. It is clear from the first strike of the instruments that this is serious, and the screams of the vocalist further confirm that Barshasketh mean black metal business. This is dense, but in no way a confusing listen. When key melodies lash out they strike with clarity and force.

Well, after listening to Death and Black Metal for over 35 years, it sometimes gets boring, even if bands try to innovate. But then you stumble upon an album, which immediately clicks: it fresh, but familiar. It’s emotional, intelligent and complex, but not for complexities’ sake. It flows, it works, it’s authentic. This album is absolutely great, it’s all I want from this kind of music: cold soundscapes, raging fires, the embrace of darkness. 10/10
