I don't hate the new Doctor yet, either!

Having watched the new Doctor Who special, my feeling: what a tease! ) I should probably go watch some more Sarah Jane Adventures.

Went out to do some weeding this morning and, as I went under the clothesline, a bird started screeching and diving at me. I was pretty much a shut-in until the past week or so, as I was finishing my (with luck) last semester of university & had a fair amount of work to do on a very tight deadline. I don't really go out back much, anyway, especially now that it's getting sunny. But, man, I didn't realise I'd stayed away for long enough for these birds to build - and to feel comfortable building - a nest right on the clothesline!

A black and white bird, resting on a small nest above some clothes pins.

They seem pretty comfortable with my waving a broom around in the air a few feet away. It's only when I walk directly beneath the nest that they start to get nervous.

Also, Skype is awesome. It's somehow much less embarrassing to talk to my mum's cats on the phone when I can see them (and also when I'm not on public transport).

I really don't think that bathrooms ought to be able to lock behind you. (At least, not without a key.) The door handle is currently in pieces on either side of the door, but unfortunately the locking bit is still securely nestled in the hole. Possibly I will have to call the rental agency, but, man, how embarrassing! Also, I have a feeling that the rental company misses the previous Responsible Adult of our household as much as I do.

P.S. I would be reading Deadpool so hard if I weren't knee-deep in linguistic analysis. There is just not enough fun stuff around.
P.P.S. Somehow I like Tim a lot more as Red Robin. I am pretty sure that's mostly not for obnoxious reasons. ;)

Slayer and Megadeth are playing together in Perth in October. I haven't been to a concert without a program and an intermission since I hit puberty, but I'm assured they're fun! I hesitate to buy a ticket because it's reasonably expensive and I'm just about certain I know no one who would go with me even if the tickets were free, ;), but I was similarly wishy-washy over Fantomas and, more recently, De La Soul and I still regret skipping those. So I think I will buy a ticket and go on my own. I'll bring a book just in case.

Leverage: why did I not listen to everyone when they were saying how awesome Leverage is? I've just started the second season, and I'm even beginning to warm to Eliot. I would hope for crossovers with Criminal Minds and Bones if that didn't imply death in my fixing things show. Maybe they could help Michael Weston, and then swing over to Santa Barbara for a nerdy con with the Psych dudes.

Comics making me smile: Batman, for Dick and Alfred's relationship. The Unwritten. Marvel Adventures Superheroes, which I get because of a misunderstanding (I wanted one issue, not an ongoing order) but look forward to reading every month anyway.

My brother has informed me that prior to the goings-on in Star Trek TOS - long enough before that unless time meddling also ripples way backwards, this should still be canon for the movie - the mind meld thing was kind of frowned upon. At this time, you could get thought disorders of some kind (it wasn't entirely clear to me) through reckless/unprotected mind-to-mind contact. MMTIs? Anyway, they were treated narratively as STIs. In case someone hasn't watched the movie, maybe kinda spoilery. )

And then a text from my mum. )

Just in case you haven't seen it*:

1. [personal profile] marcelo links to a blog about economics in comics. For example:

But its strange how there haven't been any depictions of how mutant powers could be integrated into the modern economy. It seems like whenever mutants are given employment, it's usually because their powers can be used to murder someone. The government has an endless parade of mutant assassins at their disposal, yet somehow refuse to employ Scalphunter as a computer mainframe manufacturer.

2. [personal profile] helens78's roundup of her Star Trek flashfic. Sulu/Uhura, Sulu/Kirk, and Sulu/McCoy. :D

3. [personal profile] petra & [personal profile] jamjar's Star Trek fic 99 Bowls of Plomeek Soup on the Wall:

SPOCK: "Tuvok's parents took him off planet. He is currently viewing the cold volcanoes of Maja Prime."

SAREK: "Tuvok's parents make questionable parenting choices. I have planned this trip for the last year, and it would be illogical in the extreme to cancel the reserved campground at this juncture, sacrificing a portion of the cost of rental without receiving any benefit from the payment."

4. Ballet Shoes is on TV (in Australia) in a couple of weeks. It stars Hermione as Pauline and Maria from Sarah Jane Adventures as Petrova.

5. Test of your ability to discriminate minor differences in colours. (I got a 4.)

*I am saving all my linking words for an essay, so have a list!

Star Trek

Things I was expecting based on previous Trek "knowledge", that may or may not have come to be:
- Kirk and Spock are in love canonically
- they will encounter some new group of people with a weird way of communicating or strange social habits
- women hold high positions at least slightly more often than is currently the case in US government
- there will be lots of running around with tiny not quite guns

Other more spoilery stuff )

Possibly contrary to appearances, I liked it a lot! :D I thought it had great energy, and most of the characters inspired some measure of affection.

I've subscribed to people rather than granting access because, well, I post so seldom it's probably not going to come up for a while. ;) For now, it's easier to click once than twice. I've subscribed because I want to read (or keep reading) what you're writing.

In the spirit of get-to-know-you first posting that new systems inspire:

I like comics, superheroes, enthusiasm, activism, scripted television, movies, gadgets, history, language, books, maths, new places, tiny things, board games, the 20th century. I can be a bit snobbish about snobbery. I love learning about standard grammar but I'm not so much a prescriptivist. I'm not out to everyone about my: gender, sexualities, religion, dis/ability, fandom, academic majors, grumpiness; I compartmentalize. I've started reading a lot of YA fiction. I probably haven't read that SF/F classic you're referencing (but feel free to recommend). The last movie I watched in theaters was Frost/Nixon. The first comic I bought was Uncanny X-Men 269. I have over a hundred tabs open right now. I like baking. I refrigerate drinking water and drink with meals. I've just got back to being a (full-time tertiary) student. I'm going to post this before I overthink and delete it.
