Aggressive, green hoi polloi

This is my latest effort; yet another small band of greenskins. Painting them was pure comfort food as these models simply sparkle with character and overall greatness. There’s not much to tell about them. All except one are classic Citadel greenskins from around ’87 – although the goblin with the shield might be a year or two earlier.

The exception is a fine goblin by Crooked Claw Miniatures. The mini was clearly sculpted in a classic punk outfit with studded leather west, mohawk and a Sid collar. Picking up on that I decided to do the paint-job in the same spirit, keeping the leather black, the studs steely, the nails red and plenty of eyeliner for the guy. What fun.

A new battleground

For a while now I’ve been rather bored with the green golf course on which a lot of our battles take place. Having some weeks off on parental leave has given me time to do something about this. Thus taking the cue from Sir Tobi and many other fine bloggers and gamers I decided finally to make a battlemat of my own.

I would have loved to show you some pictures of the process but given that my hands were more or less covered in brown goo for the most part I could not get around to actually using my camera. The method was fairly well-known though. I mixed acrylic paste and sand in three buckets and added different tones of brown as well as water to each container. These different mixes of paint and paste I then smeared on the cloth. While still wet I sprinkled the thing generously with some different types of flock and then left it to dry in the basement.

Today I trimmed the edges of the cloth and voila, the whole thing is done, rolled up and ready to be used.

The process was rather fun and messy. Now I’m eager to see some action on my new battleground. This will at the latest be by mid-September where we’ll be playing a scenario entitled “In the halls of the Ghoul King”, but more about that in a later post.

Evil at heart: A few dark elves

Here are a few dark elves I recently had time to finish. They’ve been lurking at the top of my “to do”-list for some time now and I’m very happy to be able to cross them off the list. The minis are great and I find myself growing more and more fond of the classic Citadel dark elves. The arrogance and menace conveyed in these miniatures is simply fantastic. There’s so much character and personality in each model which is completely lost in their later incarnations.

But I’ll admit one thing – I find these elves quite taxing to paint. They are smallish, slender minis covered in delicate details. It takes forever to finish them and there is the constant risk of muddying the result by too many or too few different colours. But the end result makes it worthwhile.

The colours I used perhaps not the most innovative but I really like the classic combo of black, blue and purple so why do something different just for the sake of doing it differently. Thus Black, blue and purple are recurring but interspersed with other colours as well, adding to a more individual look on each mini.

Well, that’s it for now. Next up is some goblins and then who knows what.

By the way, I’m looking jealously at the posts people are making while prepping for this year’s BOYL. Sadly I’m not going to make it this year – our second child is set to be born sometime next week which makes it difficult to travel to England. But next year I’ll for sure be back at Stoke Hall.
