𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗠𝗘? Sometimes, it is not a new facility or a major breakthrough. It is a faster machine setup, a more confident team, and a better way to solve everyday production challenges. Through initiatives such as the Knowledge Transfer Office, A*STAR works with local enterprises to build practical capabilities that translate into real improvements on the shopfloor. Dr David Low, Executive Director of A*STAR Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (A*STAR SIMTech) and Chief Executive Officer of A*STAR Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre (A*STAR ARTC), shares how A*STAR supported Fidel Engineering and Trading in turning a challenge in its aerospace operations into stronger capabilities, better workflows and lasting productivity gains. #InnovatewithASTAR #AdvancedManufacturing
“𝐆𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝” 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐫 By Dr David Low, Executive Director, A*STAR SIMTech and Chief Executive Officer, A*STAR ARTC. This year’s National Day theme, “Majulah Singapura, Go Beyond!”, has stayed with me because it speaks to what progress looks like not only for Singapore, but also for our local SMEs. For SMEs, “go beyond” can take many forms. It may mean developing a breakthrough invention or building a new facility. But just as often, it can also mean setting up a machine faster, improving a production process, or giving a team the confidence to work differently. Take Fidel Engineering and Trading for instance. In its high-mix, low-volume aerospace operations, each machine changeover took hours and required multiple operators. With complex products and a wide mix of production requirements, it was difficult to standardise workflows and reduce production time. For Fidel, the opportunity was not simply to introduce new tools, but to rethink how work was coordinated and carried out on the shopfloor. A*STAR’s SIMTech & ARTC - Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO), which transfers A*STAR SIMTech and ARTC’s knowledge and capabilities to the industry workforce through practical, hands-on training, worked with Fidel to address these challenges. Through mentorship and smart engineering support, the team designed standardised fixtures and new machining workflows to drastically reduce setup times. Machinists also became more comfortable with digital processes and took on new responsibilities involving automation monitoring and handling. What stands out to me about this example is that technology alone was not the story. The improvements came from strengthening the capabilities of Fidel’s own team, so that better ways of working could take root within the company. And the results were encouraging: 📉 Setup time: Reduced by 83% 📉 Misalignment rework: Decreased by 75% 📈 Machine utilisation: Improved by 16 percentage points More importantly, these were not one-off gains. The know-how now sits within Fidel’s team, supporting its ability to keep improving over time. Technology creates opportunities, but people turn knowledge into lasting improvements. As we reflect on what it means to “go beyond”, I encourage SMEs facing operational or capability challenges to start with one problem worth solving and a willingness to explore a better way of working. Connect with our KTO team to find out how A*STAR can support your capability-building journey. Joined by Guest-of-Honour Mr Heng Swee Keat, Chairman of the National Research Foundation (NRF), the anniversary celebration brought together partners from across research, academia, government and industry to mark this significant milestone for Singapore's research ecosystem. A national research infrastructure funded by the National Research Foundation Singapore (NRF) and hosted by A*STAR, NSCC supports the research needs of the public and private sectors, including research institutes, institutes of higher learning, government agencies and companies. Over the past decade, National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) Singapore has provided the advanced computing infrastructure needed to power discoveries across diverse fields, from healthcare and materials science to sustainability and AI. Here's to the next decade and more of enabling new discoveries, forging stronger partnerships, and advancing Singapore's research and innovation ambitions.
A Night of Celebration. A Decade of Impact. A Future of Possibilities. A heartfelt thank you to our Guest-of-Honour, Mr Heng Swee Keat, Chairman of the National Research Foundation Singapore (NRF), and our distinguished guests for joining us to commemorate this milestone. From ASPIRE 1 through ASPIRE 2A/2A+ to ASPIRE 2B, NSCC has evolved from operating national supercomputing infrastructure to delivering an integrated compute platform that powers AI, simulation, hybrid quantum classical computing and scientific discovery. Working alongside research and industry partners, NSCC is helping Singapore advance breakthroughs in healthcare, materials discovery, climate resilience, AI, maritime engineering and national security, translating advanced computing into real world impact. As we mark this 10-year milestone, our focus turns firmly to the future. Guided by our three strategic pillars—enhancing HPC capacity and diversity, empowering talent and users, and delivering operational excellence—we are well positioned to enable Singapore’s next wave of scientific discovery and innovation. Ten years on, our journey is only just beginning. #NSCC10 #NSCCSingapore #Supercomputing #HPC #AI #Emergingtechnologies #Innovation #SingaporeTech #FutureReady #SingaporeResearch #NSCC
