🌏 How Can ASEAN Make Environmental Procedural Rights Work in Practice? The Raoul Wallenberg Institute (RWI) convened a two-day forum in Jakarta on 27–28 July 2026, in coordination with AICHR Thailand: launching two new RWI studies on environmental procedural rights, and together with Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA) gathering stakeholder input for AICHR's Call for Inputs on the Regional Plan of Action under the ASEAN Declaration on the Right to a Safe, Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment (ADER). ADER, adopted in October 2025, marks a historic milestone for environmental rights in ASEAN. The next step is equally important: developing the Regional Plan of Action that will translate the Declaration's commitments into concrete actions and implementation measures. Over two days, judges, NHRIs, Indigenous representatives, academics, and civil society from across the region worked through the three access rights — information, participation, and justice — to identify what regional action can realistically deliver, and for whom. I dag, den 4 augusti, skulle Raoul Wallenberg ha fyllt 114 år. Han var inte den självklara hjälten. Han såg en orättvisa och valde att agera. När många tvekade handlade han. Genom mod, kreativitet och en orubblig tro på människovärdet bidrog han till att rädda tiotusentals judar i Budapest. Mer än 80 år senare står världen inför nya utmaningar. Väpnade konflikter, antisemitism, islamofobi, rasism, polarisering och auktoritära tendenser fortsätter att hota människors värdighet och frihet. Efter andra världskriget byggdes de institutioner och rättsliga ramverk som än i dag utgör grunden för skyddet av mänskliga rättigheter och humanitärt rätt. Det var framsteg som Raoul Wallenberg själv aldrig fick uppleva. Han fick aldrig se FN växa fram, de internationella konventionerna stärkas eller den globala människorättsordning som till stor del formades ur insikten om krigets fasor. Men framsteg är aldrig garanterade. Även dessa normer, värden och institutioner behöver försvaras och utvecklas. Raoul Wallenbergs arv handlar därför inte främst om historia, utan om ansvar. 🎓 What does it take to change how climate change is taught? Over the past two years, through the Raoul Wallenberg Institute Regional Asia Pacific Programme (RAPP 2), in collaboration with Ateneo School of Law and the The Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies (IHRP), Mahidol University, has worked with lecturers across South and Southeast Asia to rethink climate education. Together, faculty members redesigned existing courses and developed new ones that integrate human rights, gender equality, and human mobility into climate teaching through transformative pedagogy and the FIRE Framework. In 2026, three universities introduced new courses placing human rights and gender at the heart of climate change education: ▫️ 🇧🇩 Jagannath University, Bangladesh — launched a standalone postgraduate course on climate justice and human rights. ▫️ 🇱🇰 University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka — integrated rights- and gender-based approaches across courses in Sociology, Social Work, and Political Science. ▫️ 🇻🇳 Can Tho University, Viet Nam — introduced a new course on climate-induced human mobility, combining classroom learning with fieldwork in communities affected by riverbank erosion. 📚 The Raoul Wallenberg Institute organized in collaboration with academic partners, Africa University, Great Zimbabwe University, Midlands State University, University of Zimbabwe, and Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University (ZEGU) a conference on the theme "Strengthening Access to Justice in Zimbabwe through Law Clinics and Collaborations". 🇺🇦 Ukrainian penitentiary authorities discuss practical reforms inspired by Swedish and Finnish experience The Raoul Wallenberg Institute (RWI) brought together senior Ukrainian penitentiary representatives to discuss how successful human rights practices from Sweden and Finland can be adapted to strengthen Ukraine's penitentiary system. The meeting followed the study visit Human Rights in the Penitentiary System (25–29 May 2026), during which Ukrainian representatives visited Sweden and Finland to learn from Nordic approaches to human rights protection in places of detention. The Raoul Wallenberg Institute Harare Office in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC), convened a workshop from 21–24 July 2026 to support the development of the ZHRC Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Integration Strategy (2026-2030). As part of the Human Rights Infrastructure in Ukraine (HRIU) project funded y Sida, the Raoul Wallenberg Institute’s Ukraine team visited the regional Offices of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner For Human Rights in #Rivne, #Volyn, #Lviv and #Zakarpattia. The visits provided an opportunity to strengthen cooperation across regions, better understand regional priorities, and identify capacity-building needs to support human rights protection in #Ukraine. Participants discussed many challenges such as the protection of the rights of military personnel, veterans, internally displaced persons, children and other vulnerable groups.
