What started as a simple idea became the journey of Shiraa Al Amal. In the Shagarab refugee camps, long distances and limited transportation made daily life difficult for many people, especially older adults, patients, and students. For Taher Ahmed and Safaa Mohamed, however, this challenge became an opportunity to create a solution that would serve their community. With the support of the i-UPSHIFT programme, implemented by 249Startups in partnership with the International Labour Organization ILO PROSPECTS, they launched Shiraa Al Amal a community transportation service using rickshaws to help residents reach markets, healthcare facilities, and other essential services safely and conveniently, with a primary focus on supporting patients and older adults. Despite challenges such as fuel shortages and rough roads, the team has continued their journey with determination. 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 | New Agricultural Finance Facility Supports Sustainable Growth in Sudan's Agricultural Sector Over recent seasons, Sustain Africa and the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) proved that agricultural inputs can reach farmers at scale, moving fertilizer into eleven states last winter where local prices eased and yields responded. But emergency procurement is not a supply chain. Donor-funded response can bridge a crisis; it cannot sustain a sector. To solve this, United Capital Bank and 249Startups have partnered to launch the Agricultural Inputs Finance Facility. Building on the market foundations established by Sustain Sudan and the International Fertilizer Development Center, this initiative moves the financing of Sudan's agricultural inputs directly toward Sudanese institutions. It is a critical market-based mechanism enabling local banks and agribusinesses to finance procurement, distribution, and sales independently. Shifting control back to local financial infrastructure is how we build lasting resilience. 📈 Crises don’t just reshape markets..they reveal where opportunities lie. Over the past few weeks, we’ve shared the findings of a survey conducted by 249Startups in partnership with The Clingendael Institute, based on the responses of 71 business owners and operators in Sudan. The findings highlighted the complex challenges facing the private sector, from declining trade activity and rising operating costs to displacement and the psychological pressures affecting the business environment. But they also revealed something else. When participants were asked about the most promising opportunities, their responses centered on food, energy, and logistics, the same sectors that emerged as top priorities for meeting people’s essential needs. These sectors provide a clear indication of where the market is heading today and where essential needs intersect with economic opportunities. As businesses continue adapting to a rapidly changing reality, markets are also reshaping their priorities and creating new opportunities for growth and investment. 💡 Perhaps one of the key messages from this series is that understanding challenges alone is not enough. The ability to recognize and respond to ongoing market shifts is just as important. Some of the biggest challenges businesses face today don’t appear in financial statements. When discussing the impact of conflict on the private sector, the conversation often focuses on inflation, supply chain disruptions, and limited access to finance. However, the findings of a survey conducted by 249Startups in partnership with the The Clingendael Institute reveal another side of the reality. 42% of respondents reported that employee or customer displacement has affected their businesses, while 38% said that stress and psychological trauma influence business decisions. Many businesses are also facing challenges related to brain drain, resulting in the loss of the skills and expertise they rely on to manage operations and maintain business continuity. These challenges affect every aspect of business from planning and investment to building partnerships and making decisions in an uncertain environment. Although their impact is felt every day, they do not always receive the same attention as more visible economic challenges. 💡 Some of the most significant factors affecting business continuity don’t appear in economic indicators, but they shape the decisions businesses make every day.
