Room 13 by Kenneth Gilmore

History / War / Biography

Date Published: April 13, 2026

Publisher: MindStir Media

About the Book:

What happens when training ends—and real combat begins?
In ROOM 13: A Fighter Pilot’s Story, Colonel Kenneth Gilmore delivers a gripping, firsthand account of life as a fighter pilot during the Vietnam/Laos conflict, where survival was never guaranteed—and every mission could be your last.

This powerful military memoir traces Gilmore’s extraordinary journey from a college football coach to an elite U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, flying some of the most iconic aircraft of the era, including the F-102, F-101, A-1 Skyraider, and F-106.

But nothing could prepare him for the brutal reality of war.

✈️ 220 Combat Missions. One Life-Changing Experience.
Assigned to fly the A-1 Skyraider—an aircraft with one of the highest loss rates of the Vietnam War—Gilmore quickly learned that traditional training fell short in the face of enemy fire.

After being shot down during mission 130, he survived hours on the ground before rescue—an experience that would forever shape his life, leadership, and understanding of war.

🔥 The Seven Rules That Meant Survival
In the chaos of combat, Gilmore and a fellow pilot developed seven essential rules for survival—lessons forged under extreme pressure and life-or-death conditions.

These principles became the foundation of his leadership when he later returned to command and mentor fellow fighter pilots as an Operations Officer.

🎖️ A Story of Courage, Leadership, and Sacrifice
Over the course of his career, Gilmore flew 220 combat missions and earned numerous honors, including three Distinguished Flying Crosses for heroism. His rapid rise through the ranks to Colonel reflects both his skill and leadership—but also came at a cost, pulling him away from the cockpit he loved.

Alan Hovhaness by Hinako Fujihara-Hovhaness

Unveiling One of the Great Composers of the 20th Century

Biography
Date Published: October 28, 2025
Publisher: Peanut Butter Publishing

In the year 2000, after Alan’s death, Hinako Fujihara-Hovhaness started writing poems, which was the only way she could cope with her great loss. They were written with her limited English, yet they were spontaneous and poignant, straight from her heart. After she had written hundreds of poems, it was not enough. Hinako started writing stories from my memories about Alan, events she had experienced with him.

To Hinako, “Alan was a master of counterpoint and an intellectual, yet he had many different sides to his personality, from being a polite, distinguished gentleman to a wild savage, idealistic, and old-fashioned man to sexy womanizer. He understood human nature and emotion, and I think that is why his music touches people’s hearts and is loved by them, even though his music is built on an intellectual foundation”.

Prologue

Buddy Brown knew it.

He had seen it.

It was the vision of what he might look like if he became “Mega Rich.”

His 15-year-old cousin and her boyfriend had driven from Minneapolis to his home in Pillager, Minnesota, and 13-year-old Buddy Brown was mesmerized by their red customized conversion van. It had captain’s chairs, teardrop windows, and a bed in the back. Visualizing what he would do with his vehicle (when the time came) was no problem. He would go to the Ford dealer and ask them to modify a Ford Econoline van into a four-wheel-drive unit. Although the manufacturer had not yet produced a four-wheel-drive van, he knew they had already done it with the F-150 pickup, so adapting a van should be no problem. He would be wealthy enough to pay for the changes.

In addition to the chairs, windows, and bed, customized elements inside would include carpeting along the sides and an upholstered ceiling with tiny colored lights poking through, creating a mysterious mood. The cell phone had not yet been invented in 1973, but Buddy had a concept that a mobile phone could be placed inside a vehicle. His mind excelled at invention, mechanics, and mathematics.

Once he purchased the van, he would drive it to his parents’ home during the night and park it in front of the picture window.

When they awoke and looked outside, they would see that Buddy had made it. He was “Mega Rich.”

Read an Excerpt- Cracked Heart

My heart is cracked, as the warmth of my love starts to seep through the wounds of my heart it is being replaced by the chills of the cold wind forming tiny icicles along the openings of the cracks. The warm song of my heart is being replaced with the cringing howl of the wind, the howl that carries the message of hurt and brokenness. My heart was once full but now it is hollow allowing the howl of the wind to echo through my empty chambers of my heart as it becomes the Grim Reaper, blowing away any fragments of shattered memories and hope.

My heart that was once Summer is now Winter, Autumn was skipped which has resulted in my heart not being able to adapt to the rapid drop in temperature and now has the appearance of a glittering glass web spun by the black widow spider of hurt. The cracks shimmer from the light dancing off the icicles as the light tries to leave an encouraging promise of hope… hope that my heart will beat again. My heart is so empty that the emptiness creates a burden of heaviness that slows down the beat of my heart to a loud thump.

Winter brings about comfort of rest, I need to rest now in hibernation. I will rebuild what is broken, revive what it dead and fill what is empty, this will take time. The Winter season of my heart will eventually pass into Spring allowing my heart to adapt to the increase in temperature and no longer resemble the cracked glass of sadness.

The book honors and celebrates Patsy Swayze. There are twenty-nine interviews which include her students, colleagues, and friends. Their stories showcase what a trailblazer she was and the extent of her influence on them and on the world. Many of her students continue to carry forward her legacy by following in her giant dance footsteps. There are sixty-four photos, most in color and rarely seen, which help tell this story.

Patsy Swayze was an icon in the dance and performing arts world for decades as a dancer, teacher, mentor, and choreographer. Her work includes founding the Houston Jazz Ballet, teaching at the University of Houston, running her own dance studios, and choreographing for Theatre, Incorporated, Playhouse Theatre, and Hollywood movies. She inspired thousands of dance students, many of whom went on to become professionals in the performing arts, and instilled in all students a strong work ethic and set of values. With that said, she was most proud of her family and thought her greatest achievement was being the mother of five children.

Of course, Patsy had one very famous student, her beloved son Patrick, known as "Buddy" to family and friends. The book touches on the relationship between Patsy and Buddy, and Buddy's life. Another renowned student is Jaclyn Smith, who kindly granted a full-length interview about her experiences with Patsy.

Patsy was a pioneer in opening her dance classes and her heart to all students, regardless of race, economic, or cultural background, and this was no small feat in the fifties and sixties in Houston. In addition, Patsy was known to be extremely philanthropic.

Patsy Swayze continues to touch the lives of multitudes of people, including the author's life. In today's world it is especially wonderful to have such a hero, someone who gave so much to others and has left such a profound legacy.

Thomas Jefferson Family Secrets

by William G. Hyland Jr.

Nonfiction / Biography / History

Date Published: 2-1-22

Publisher: Palmetto Publishing / Blackstone Publishing

About the Book:

A fascinating biography of Thomas Jefferson that presents an entirely new and provocative look at the final years of his life, as seen through the eyes of his most trusted family confidants. A powerful profile based on fresh research and unpublished memoirs.

Read an Excerpt:

On April 13, 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the Jefferson Memorial on the edge of the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC. World War II had injected the two hundredth anniversary of Thomas Jefferson’s birth with special significance. The tide of history had just shifted its course. One of the foremost political figures in American history finally took his place in the ultimate American pantheon, within sight of George Washington’s soaring monument and Abraham Lincoln’s brooding, seated statue. No American has ever before enjoyed such a transcendent status as Thomas Jefferson. And over the next 250 years of American history, no public figure would ever reach the same historic heights.

This is the triumphant “political” image of Jefferson, yet one far from reality. Jefferson had desired to live in the “tranquil, permanent felicity” that flowed from a secluded home life at his elegant mountain estate, Monticello.[i] But during the last seventeen years of his cloistered family life, his story was infused with high drama in a congealed world of alcoholism, domestic violence, family jealousies, bankruptcy, and a grisly murder. Then came a humiliating series of political wounds, including an alleged sexual affair with a slave, corroding Jefferson’s personal and professional reputation.
