Sam is a writer, mainly (though not exclusively) of plays and short stories, and a creative writing teacher. Since being awarded DYCP funding in 2021 to adapt her play ‘My Mind Is Free’ into a graphic novel, she has fallen head over heels for the format, and is now working on the happy marriage of words AND pictures.
Sam was the founder of theatre equality organisation, 17Percent and the main driving force. During its lifetime 17Percent produced the work of over 40 female identifying writers; set up a Youtube channel to interview female theatre makers, making an archive of valuable information, provided advocacy and campaigned to get more women’s plays produced in UK theatres. (2009-2017)
Sam was a member of the Royal Court Theatre’s Young Writers’ Programme 2004-05. She has an MA in Creative Writing (Plays and screenplays) 2006-08, from City University, London, and was also a script reader for The Cock Tavern Theatre for 6 months.
Plays: The Chatham Witch (Icon Theatre) pre-recorded sections; Pretty Boy (White Bear); He Said She Said (Landor Theatre); Seven Tunes on the Flute (Trend Festival, Rome); My Mind is Free (various tours, 2016-19, nominated for the Human Trafficking Foundation’s Anti-Slavery Day media awards 2016). Plays for children aged 8-12. (See more on the Plays page.)
Short stories have been performed at festivals and spoken word events such as Are you sitting comfortably?, Seasonally Effected, Roundabout Nights, Malcfest, Nucleus ArtsFest and Rochester LitFest. And published in Indie Bites Volume 1; The Medusa Project; Alphabet Soup; Litro; Confluence; Emerging Worlds; The Blue Nib; Dark London volume 1; Stories from songs; City without a head and An assemblance of judicious heretics. (See more on the Stories page.)
In 2010, Sam set up indie publisher and literary arts organisation, Wordsmithery. Wordsmithery publishes beautifully produced limited edition books, and organises small and largescale literary projects and events such as Welcome to Cloisterham – a one day festival celebrating Charles Dickens’ life and works with a modern twist, held in Rochester Castle Gardens and the Empty Chair Poetry Trail.
Wordsmithery also publishes a literary magazine Confluence.
In 2015, Wordsmithery won the Literature category in the Medway Culture, Design and Tourism Awards. In 2016, it was a Finalist in the Kent Creative Live Awards for Publishing.
