Hello! One million years later, insert obligatory moaning about how I never update anymore and how much I miss it and how much fandom has changed et cetera, I have been STRUGGLING with writing this damn Our Flag Means Death fic because writing! Is hard! And I truly worship all of you who manage to do it, so often, so consistently, so well, you are all gods.

Because I'm trying to write a Passover fic (/o\) and I am already waaaay past my self-imposed deadline of the seder (//o\\), I have come here to complain about writing and also self-motivate by linking to recently-posted fics, "recently" meaning "within the past 2 years" apparently because that's just how out of touch I've been.

A bit of atmosphere: it is a beautiful spring day. I've taken a day off from work. I have a bouquet of tulips and another bouquet of other flowers which I bought for the holiday, and they are blooming and gorgeous. The window is open, and as happens in this season, many flies have come to visit and are circling in the air, currently counting around 20, and I have no earthly idea how I will get them out. They are extremely annoying but I do feel better for sharing, so sorry for that.

Okay. Fics what I have posted! All written for exchanges because apparently that's the only thing that gets me to write.

Also, while I'm at it, for... let's call them various reasons which I am not very proud of I haven't crossposted here any of the (very few) fics I've written since, it seems, Yuletide 2014. I have been quite terrible at posting recently, and by recently I mean the past year, and pretty bad at fandom participation (but very, very good at fandom consumption - I still read all of the fic). BUT:

[community profile] purimgifts stories are now live and revealed, and that, as much as it's not been my best year modding and I will have to have deeper thoughts about that soon, that is still something I'm proud of and makes me so happy to see. This year, 158 works were posted in 120 fandoms, all focused on female and/or Jewish characters (and/or characters persecuted by evil viziers!), and I haven't managed to browse through even a small percentage of them but the ones I've seen, and I'm sure the ones I haven't, are just perfect little gems of fics; this ficathon really does feel like a colorful basket of treats, whether you look at just the gifts you received or the collection as a whole.

And as we are aware I have not exactly been on a fic writing roll these past few years, BUT I have written fic! 3 ficlets for [archiveofourown.org profile] Shoshana-ben-hohim, to be exact:

Masquerade (or: Gary Bettman doesn't have bad ideas) (Hockey RPF, 580 words, gen)
Characters: Gary Bettman, Rahm Emanuel
Summary: "Which one of you morons decided it would be a good idea to sic twenty thousand masks of Jonathan Toews on my town?"

A Healthy Debate (or: bad ideas everywhere) (Hockey RPF, ~700 words, gen)
Characters: Gary Bettman, Bill Daly, Steve and Donald Fehr
Summary: Wherein Gary Bettman and Donald Fehr get into a really weird twitter war.

When You're Lost (Hockey RPF, 1000 words, gen)
Characters: Kelli Stack, Patrick Kane
Summary: Kelli's drunk enough to think that Patrick Kane looks hot tonight, which means she's probably drunker than she wants to be.

...because the world needed some cracky Bettman holiday fic, okay. Next stop: a Passover Hockey/Sports Night crossover. I'm telling you, guys, this year it might actually happen. I can feel it. (Don't trust me on that.)
roga: coffee mug with chocolate cubes (Default)
I can't believe I haven't updated in the whole month since I've been here. Believe me, it's not for lack of wanting to, although of course I could have found the time if I'd tried harder; but I am working such unnecessarily long hours, and then I try to utilize whatever free time I have left to have fun and take photos and get a feel of New York City, or I'm too tired and lazy and just want to read some fic before I go to sleep, and so I'm left with a lot of Things Done and over 1000 photos (and counting) and 30 days of no posts.

Today I arrived at the office at 8:30AM, after taking a cab because I don't even know how to deal with the kind of weirdly slushy snow that was raining down, and left the office at 11:30PM once again with a cab because it was totally worth $20 getting home before midnight. There is a 24 hour diner on my block - I can say things like that now, temporary though it may be - and I stopped there for dinner because I was tired and hungry, and lost my appetite halfway through because I was too tired and how did I think I could eat tuna salad and eggs so late in the day.

And then I plowed through all of the necessary set ups for Purimgifts because enough is enough, it has to go live in order for people to actually have time to like, write the fic, do the things, so I really hope there are no egregious typos/broken links/totally incomprehensible directions, although I'd have to blame last year's me for that since I mostly copy/pasted.

In any case without any more ado than necessary GUESS WHAT'S BACK:

<---that thing. \o/

I am going to try so hard to be more here. Watch me. (Don't judge though. Don't worry, I've got that covered.)
roga: (dcu: tim *facepalm*)
Hello! Today is a terrible, horrible, no good day and I hate that that's the way I'm breaking a month-long, christ, silence but there it is. I haven't actually been away, I've been wanting to post pretty much every single day and just haven't been able to muster up the energy to do so.

State of the me: I am at work, I am not having a fun day, I am still deeply into hockey fandom, mostly reading fic and watching games and listening to podcasts and reading blogs. I want to say that I read everything on my flists, still, but that would be a lie, sometimes I skim :( It's been a busy few months :(

State of the state: we have a government! It is... not nearly as bad as it could have been. I am confused.

State of the world: We also have a pope! Who is a George Bluth lookalike, which is not awkward at all.

Okay. I basically wrote exactly 1 fic in 2012 (/o\), and just the 3 purimgifts ficlets in 2013, which makes me undeniably sad but I have recently begun having hockey plotbunnies and I hope hope hope to write more soon. In particular I have a Passover hockey plotbunny, so like, please someone hit me over the head if I don't write it thank you.

Until that happens, here's what I wrote for Yuletide and Purimgifts:

An Unexpected Visitor (Parks & Recreation/The West Wing)
Words: 1700 words
Rating: PG, gen, no warnings
Summary: Pod!Chris arrived in town on December 21st, 2012. (Written for [personal profile] krabapple for [community profile] yuletide 2012.)

And for [personal profile] hagar_972 for [community profile] purimgifts, three stories that take place in the same place, which had different names in different eras (my how clever am I):

1. Gate of the Valley (Bible)
Words: 765
Rating: PG, gen, no warnings
Characters: David, Abigail, Joab
Summary: At the Gate of the Valley, a royal carriage breaks down.

2. Neveh Ilan (NCIS/The Voice (Israel) RPF)
Words: 1000
Rating: PG, gen, no warnings
Characters: Ziva, Tony
Summary: Ziva meets an old friend during a visit (home).

3. Bab El-Wad (Israeli Defense Forces - Anthropomorphic)
Words: 990
Rating: PG, gen
Characters: ...anthropormorphic IDF corps er
Summary: The corps wait around.

...as you may have deduced, my recipient was Israeli, which allowed for a bit of fandom flexibility/limit stretching. At least it got me writing again! I am telling you. HOCKEY PASSOVER FIC, IT WILL HAPPEN. Very possibly as a crossover even, shocker shocker. *fingers crossed*

SO HI. This thing right here is back:

A multifandom ficlet/art exchange focusing on female or Jewish characters,
and also some evil viziers.
Sign ups end on the night of Feb 3rd.
Rules, FAQs, and sign ups here!

There is also a pimping post if you want to grab the code, and a brainstorming post if you want to brainstorm, or you can jump straight ahead to the sign up form at the AO3.

Sign-ups this year are super short (started today, end on Sunday the 3rd!) because I suck. Then there's a super short time frame to write (Feb 4th to 21st), also because I suck! And because Purim is super early this year, I guess I can blame the Jewish calendar a little bit. But mostly I've been too exhausted to, er, get things moving, and I feel bad and hope people have fun and participate anyway.

If you have never done Purimgifts and are curious but don't feel like reading the whole FAQ, please feel free to ask and I'll pimp it to you personally :D

Okay. Sleep now, and then another DAY (and I mean a day), and then there will be a weekend, wow do I need there to be a weekend. WEEKENDS FOR EVERYBODY.
roga: pink lipped brendon urie looking pensive (patd: brendon urie: kind of pretty)
Where to even begin? Since I have still not caught up on sleep since the weekend and I barely woke up for work today, I will just say that I love everyone I met in London (hi guys!♥) and I will put up a full recap of everything after I get some sleep.

I will also say that anyone who wants to participate in [community profile] purimgifts but has not yet signed up, tomorrow is the last day for sign ups, so hurry thee to the rule post or AO3 sign up form and sign up :D

For those of you who've never done this before, it's basically writing 3 ficlets, each between 300-1000 words (no more), about characters who are female and/or Jewish and/or persecuted by evil viziers, and also gifting your recipient with 3 images/art/graphics of some kind. (I will remind you also that there is this guy in bandom, some call him Gabe Saporta, you may write about him if you like.)

Okay, so now I will go and sleep and tomorrow I will hopefully be awake enough to (1) be awake and (2) post stuff. I will leave you with just one video before I go:

THAT'S RIGHT THAT IS ONE MINUTE AND FORTY SECONDS OF DRUMMING BEFORE I MADE THE BIZARRE DECISION TO PAN AWAY FROM SPENCER SMITH'S FACE. I've rewatched this video an average of 7 times a day this week. I'M REALLY DOING BETTER.

and also some evil viziers.
Sign ups end Feb 8th.
Rules, FAQs, and sign ups here!

THAT'S RIGHT. There is an AO3 collection and everything! Sign up form is here!

Also I HAVE TO GET UP FOR MY FLIGHT IN HALF AN HOUR. Worst time management, worst, but okay. I have a stocked up Kindle for the flight (books! fic!), which I will try to ignore in favor of sleep. I've decided not to take my dSLR to London, which hurts my heart, oh my god, but it will be much more convenient to walk around without it, especially for the show. Still. My camera ;___;. If you happen to meet me in London and happen to have a dSLR you can lend me while we're together, that would be awesome lalala aaaaaaanyway I will go nap now.

\o/

(I have not signed up yet, but oh god things I want to recieve: The Good Wife! The Hunger Games (idk!)! BANDOM duh! Hmmmm what more what more I need to think.)
roga: (mcr comic: headdesking frank)
Okay. I really wanna go, I really really really wanna go see Panic in London on 02/02, if only because if I don't see them on this leg of European tour who even KNOWS when I'll be able to see them, but also just cause, you know. So. It's a really bad time work-wise, because if I had planned it out months in advance it would be fine, but as it is my current-boss is leaving that day and it will be future-boss's first day in the job, and one of the girls in my team will be abroad, and one of the guys on my team announced he was leaving at the end of the week, so if I were to leave next weekend it would leave only one team member and the new boss babysitting everyone's clients over the weekend. So it's really bad timing, but I asked today anyway, just to know if it was possible, and future!boss said I could take one day off, which, ha, $600 on a Thurs-Sat weekend seems kind of excessive (KIND OF) but I have not been abroad in over a year and ugh ugh ugh I would like to go, though I really do hate that it would be just for 3 days, barely even 2 full days in the city since it includes flights, ugh am I a complete idiot for considering this?

But let's say I am considering this. In order to have the best time possible and minimize costs,

1) would any of you/your nice London friends be willing to put me up for 2 nights next weekend, and
2) what are my chances for actually getting a good (standing? I believe the good ones are standing?) ticket for the London show on the 2nd?

...the more I think about it the more I feel like an idiot for thinking about it, but ugh. Why do they not, like, publish their tour dates for the next 2 years so I know when they'll be in the area again...

*

On a different note, [community profile] purimgifts will take place this year, belated though it may be. Since Purim is early this year (March 6th), at the moment I need to choose between a short sign up window and a short writing window -- right now I'm really hoping I can open sign ups for a week/6 days on Wednesday, then a day for match ups, leaving a month to write. So if you are interested, stay tuned for that.

*

I'm halfway to crashing and know I'm not going to answer any comments to this post today, so ha, I suck. But please do let me know your thoughts about London, here or in private <3
roga: (ai: cookradam)
So I realized that I never crossposted my [community profile] purimgifts stories to LJ/DW, and oh, god. I'm one of those people now. The ones who are all "oh yes I wrote this fic and totally forgot to post it here ha ha I am so nonchalant and carefree and don't care about comments and stuff". I DO CARE. I AM NOT ABOVE SELF-PIMPING MYSELF TO DEATH. I think I was just having a weird and super busy time around Purimgifts and kept wanting to make a special post or something and putting it off till I had time, and, well.

With THAT out of the way -- these were my Purimgifts ficlets, written for [personal profile] lferion, in the slightly belated manner to which all my purimgifts recipients throughout the years have become accustomed:

Three Reasons Adam Doesn't Let His Mom Book Them Shows Anymore

I. An Unexpected Venue (Adam Lambert/Narnia, G, 700 words)

II. Meleth Sôg (Adam Lambert/Lord of the Rings, G, 630 words)

III. Do You Know What You Got Into (Adam Lambert/Batman verse, PG, 740 words).

...summary in title :-)

Also -- and I apologize for taking so long to post about this -- [livejournal.com profile] reena_jenkins, who is a posfic master, has recorded my old House/X-Men crossover The Trouble With Mutants, and you can download it and leave her a comment here. It's an excellent recording and she has such a good acting voice, and I am honored and excited and utterly pleased. She really is awesome :D
roga: coffee mug with chocolate cubes (Default)
I am so exhausted I keep taking 5 minutes off to just rest my head on the desk or the chair and sleep/not sleep (twicethree times in the middle of composing this post!), and I should really go to sleep for real.

I cannot though, not without linking you guys to my first [livejournal.com profile] purimgifts gift, the most perfect Sports Night/Gilmore Girls crossover you will ever read. Gilmore Girls/Sports Night. I repeat. Gilmore Girls/Sports Night.

You can also browse the 62 ficlets that were revealed today here.

:D
roga: (purimgifts)
Dear flisters/rlisters, in order to widen my pool of potential [community profile] purimgifts pinch hitters since I fear I'm beginning to run out, do any of you want to be added to the list? It means you'll be notified whenever a new pinch hit comes out and you can claim it if you want.

Fulfilling a request requires writing 3 ficlets, each between 300 and 1000 words (but no more), about characters who are female or Jewish or persecuted by evil viziers, in whichever fandom you claimed; in addition, you gift your recipient with three images of any kind you wish. (Rules/FAQs are here, if you want to check them out.)

The deadline for new pinch hits is currently the 16th/17th. IF you want in on the list, leave me your email in the comments, which are even screened, just for fun.

Thanks ♥

--One more day left to sign up for [community profile] purimgifts! Rules and sign ups here, and if anyone needs an AO3 invite let me know and I will supply. 57 people have signed up so far, making this the biggest year yet, and now that the AO3 is capable of hosting exchanges I am a lot less intimidated by the number. It is incredibly reassuring that not only will matching be easier than it was in past years, but I also won't have to send out 50 assignment emails individually, or post 50x3 anon fics manually. And the AO3 support people have been really really helpful during the entire process. All in all, I am definitely glad to be hosting the exchange there, despite having reservations.

--This Stars Who Look Alike slideshow is actually one of the first Yahoo! slideshows I have ever enjoyed (clicking Yahoo! celebrity slideshows may be a guilty pleasure of mine). In any case, they make some extremely good points, and some strange ones. The weirdest for me was the George Clooney/Adam Arkin comparison because what Adam Arkin WISHES, but then when you look at the photo again you suddenly see all these similarities and all of a sudden it's like WAIT, IS GEORGE CLOONEY NOT AS ATTRACTIVE AS I THOUGHT? or maybe IS ADAM ARKIN ACTUALLY ATTRACTIVE?*

*No offense anyone who finds Adam Arkin attractive! Just. Not my type.

--Tonight's Eretz Nehederet had one hilarious sketch: Cholent Driver (Hebrew, sorry!), whose motto is kids, don't eat cholent and drive. (Eating cholent -- which is, incidentally, currently cooking in our oven -- is for these purposes like eating turkey on Thanksgiving.)

--For the record, I am letting out so much Bandom (well, Panic!) steam in [livejournal.com profile] thesameband, it's excellent. I'm kind of spamming the comm with comments, but, uh, whatever. Also Spencer Smith thinks his Mac 'n Cheese should be rated NC-17. I can only imagine he has been reading some [community profile] kink_bingo "food" prompts if that is what came to mind. I hope he read the one where Ryan fucks a bagel OH MY GOD SELF SHUT UP.

Oooh also I've finally started reading But Not This Song, the Bandom slavefic AU that I've been putting off forever just because it's 200k, and I am loving it :D It hits so many of my kinks. Everyone keeps discovering everyone's secret pasts all the time! Everyone keeps being surprised by other's unexpected behavior! There are slaves and soldiers and revolution conspiracies and angst and h/c, I am enjoying it so very greatly :D
roga: coffee mug with chocolate cubes (Default)
I'm sorry, one last banner because I just made it:

So, okay. For those of you who don't know it, [community profile] purimgifts is a fun little exchange that takes place around the Jewish holiday of Purim but is not religious in nature and anyone can play (please do!). It includes writing (and receiving):

*three little ficlets, each between 300-1000 words (which means that overall you will be writing 3000 words TOPS)
*three graphics, which can be photos or icons or art or any random pic you find on the internet.

And because Purim is kind of a women power story about how a woman saved everyone, fics should be focused on:

*characters who are Jewish and/or
*characters who are female and/or
*characters who are persecuted by evil viziers.

All in all, it is a pretty low-key low pressure gift exchange, and the more people I know and fandoms I like participate, the more I enjoy running it :-)

So like, LET'S SAY you wanted to sign up and write Bandom, eligible characters would be: *points to banner* Killjoys Mini-Ray, Lyn-Z, Greta, Vicky-T, all of The Like, Gabe Saporta, Joe Trohman, Alex Greenwald, Eric Ronick. And another music RPF person you could write is of course Adam Lambert :D

And like. To name a few randomly popular fandoms. You can write about Arthur from Inception or Tim Drake from DCU, both of whom have enough canon/fanon support to be considered Jewish. You could write about any of the girls from Glee or Grey's or Friday Night Lights (please!) or Merlin, or... dig into your current fandoms, I'm sure you can find someone you want to write 300 words about. All the Sorkin shows people, the Whedon shows people, the Brian Fullar people... you get the gist :-)

Rules and sign ups here. And that is all I will say about the matter.

Also! The sky was very pretty yesterday: single pic )

And now to watch FNL 5x11. Only two more eps to go ;__;
roga: (ai: adam sunglasses)

:DDDDDD live, babies. Rules and FAQs here, sign ups close on Feb 5th, and okay. My working assumption is that if you've participated in past years then you're already watching the comm and I'm just spamming you now, and if I've known you for the past few years and haven't gotten you to participate it's a lost cause anyway, so the people who are left are people I've met in the past year who have no idea what [livejournal.com profile] purimgifts/[community profile] purimgifts is.

So it is you guys I plan on unleashing my pimping on. Tomorrow, when it is not 4AM.

:D
roga: (disney: baby pegasus)
1AM again, and I am falling asleep. Again. There are too few hours a day, man, and I keep wanting to say more and more things and I don't know when that will happen. And also I have recs to post! I haven't even gone through half of the [livejournal.com profile] no_tags I want to read, and I have recs from there too, and -- okay fuck it, just so I don't forget:

This amazing Merlin fic by anon that [personal profile] sophinisba linked me to -- it's a fandom AU, where Arthur is a BNF and Merlin is his beta and they fall in love and it's amazing and funny and I was just smiling the whole way through :D It's a kinkmeme WIP but constantly updated and up to 25 parts so far, and really, so much fun :D

I've been waiting so long to be where I'm going by [personal profile] lalejandra - PaTD, Ryan/Spencer, four times they kissed and one time it turned into more -- one of my absolute favorite no_tags fics, which starts with a beautiful scene with them as teenagers but then progresses to show all the different stages of their relationship and the band until today, and it's just, every single thing I wanted to read about the two of them pre and post split written in the most gorgeous way possible. Awesome post-split fics are so, so satisfying. I loved this.

Five Times Spencer Smith Came Out -- Spencer/Brendon but mostly Spencer gen, five small scenes about coming out, aww ♥. Just a small, really nice fic.

...and also a ton of more no_tags fics to rec, so okay, hopefully I will remember at another time.

Now, a note some notes about current politics:

No Thoughts, just thoughts; one of those times where this place really leans towards journal rather than blog. )

And now it's 4AM and I have somehow distracted myself into wakefulness and I will hate myself tomorrow.

Also, also. I really need to set up [community profile] purimgifts by this weekend omg. I'm afraid I haven't given myself enough time to look at the AO3 sign up forms (the one time I tried my net connection died) and I fear changing the set-up and figuring out how AO3 sign ups would work would, in this timeframe, be more work than having sign ups on LJ and manual match ups.

Anyway, I am getting excited about it though. I really hope we'll get some Bandom fic this year (any Bandom people reading this, rest assured that I will find a way to pimp this exchange to you, it is short and sweet and you will LIKE IT), and IDK. Every year there are a few stories that make me the happiest person in the world, to know that in some way I helped enable their existence. So that is something to look forward to soon.

Okay, so I cannot even begin to tell you how amazing the fic I received for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide is, and I am wholeheartedly reccing it for people who have watched the movie and not:

Masks Upon Masks (fandom: the movie Kick-Ass).

Relevant movie recap: Kick-Ass tells the story of a few teenagers with no special superpowers who decide to become superheroes, including an 11-year-old girl, Mindy, who was trained by her father to be a brutal, foul-mouthed, incredibly kick-ass heroine: Hit Girl. At the end of the film she retires the costume and enrolls in school, for the first time in her life facing the task of living a normal life as a regular girl.

The fic I got is about what happens to Mindy next: it's about her trying to settle into life as a normal girl, becoming a teenager and growing up, figuring out where Hit Girl ends and Mindy begins and whether the two can be separated. It's a beautiful coming of age story and exactly what I wanted to read after the movie, and god, this girl, I love her so much ♥.

I've started slowly going through the archive, though I've only read a handful of stories so far. I've also been reading the [livejournal.com profile] bandomstuffsit stories as they come -- so many good ones over the past few days! -- so my Firefox is a tabful of riches and I hardly know what to do with it. Hopefully I will be able to go trough them all.

I hope all you who celebrated Christmas on the 25th had a great Christmas! I went to Jerusalem on Christmas Eve, to see what the Old City was up to. In the past, I'd gone to Jaffa and Jerusalem and Nazareth to see how various churches celebrated and how the streets were decorated; this year, I considered going someplace new, but I still (...as always) had to finish up my Yuletide story, so I didn't want to go too far, and the Old City has a high concentration of churches so even if you miss/have no room in one church, you can make it to the ceremony in another one.

Pics under the cut. )

And now I shall return to a fic and then sleep. It's so weird having three different things in three different anonymous exchanges at the same time; I keep expecting some kind of action to happen like when you post a fic, but it's all low key and not everything's even been posted! It's really fun though, especially the exchanges where gifts are spaced out over a couple of days.

Which reminds me oh my god, soon I will have to start planning [community profile] purimgifts again /o\ Which, like, yay, but how so soooon? I'm always afraid people will be too burned out by the various December exchanges to sign up. On the other hand, I do enjoy the fact that it's relatively small; makes modding that much easier, though I've never modded anything bigger so I don't really know. In any case, Purim is thankfully late this year, which means sign ups can open up in mid-to-late January with people getting at least 5-6 weeks to write, which is frankly more than anyone needs for this exchange.

Okay. Going.
