I watched some more TV this week! My shows, plus I DLed a bunch of pilots and pilot-hopped with my sister; there were so many that if something didn't capture our attention in the first 10-15 minutes, we moved on to the next one. So:

Mad Men: I am finally all caught up on season 4! Oh, this show. "The Beautiful Girls" (4.09) was so good, and the last shot of the episode -- the cinematography of this show just takes my breath away. Also I'll just mention that my favorite things about the Sally scene (you know the one) in "The Chrysanthemum and the Sword" (4.05) is that she was watching The Man from U.N.C.L.E on TV. Ducky! <3

Detroit 1-8-7 1.01: New show about Homicide PD in Detroit. Oh god, how can a show with such an awesome cast be so, so bad? Maybe I just shouldn't have started watching another show on the tail end of The Wire, but seriously, I don't know much about police work but I know that their police work was bad, the script was full of itself, and the emotionally stunted but brilliant detective mentor is the male white lead, and it -- and he -- are freaking annoying. The other characters look like they might turn out to be interesting -- some of them even were, a little -- but the only two white guys are set up as the brilliant mentor and the hot up-and-comer, and it sucks. And oh god, that interrogation scene. I wish I could take this show seriously, but here is what happened: meaningless spoiler )

Anyway, it's just a shame to see a good premise and cast go to waste like that. Too bad.

Undercovers 1.01: Watched the first 20 minutes before I stopped. IDK, I like the idea, I like the cast, I want it to work out for this show! But... I was kind of bored :/ And it felt like JJ Abrams was trying something new with the editing that didn't really work out; the pacing, the comic timing, people talking over one another; I could see what he was trying to do, but it just didn't work for me. But I'll try again without my sister, at least watch until the end of the ep.

ALSO, this faily little exchange was not appreciated:

Sister: "Are you with the Chan-Finkelstein wedding?"
Disdainful old white guy: "...Do I look like a Chan? Or a Finkelstein?"

Ummmmmmm... the fuck?

Better With You 1.01: New sitcom. With a laugh track. Stopped watching after 5 minutes.

The Whole Truth 1.01: Okay, I actually liked this one! Its editing was a little annoying, as is on occasion the dialogue, but I liked the premise: it's a lawyer show that equally shows you the defense and the persecution. Moira Tierney plays the DA, with Eamonn Walker (!) and Sean Wing on her team, and Rob Morrow plays a private criminal defense attorney, with Christine Adams and Anthony Ruivivar (Carlos from Third Watch ♥) at his side. Tierney and Morrow went to law school together, and now they're friendly rivals at the courthouse. The first episode features a murder, and the show follows both sides as they build their cases, and finally shows us the trial. This was the first lawyer show that made me feel like I was part of the jury. I was presented evidence by both sides, both lawyers believed that the suspect was guilty/not guilty, and it made the case really interesting -- even if I didn't care about the relationship between the two main characters (which I don't, not yet, though I'm loving all the other lawyers so far), I just found the case itself interesting. And in the end, once the jury reached their verdict, you still don't know whether the suspect actually did it -- you only know which lawyer made a better case in court. (They do give a hint at the very end of the episode, so we're not left completely in the dark.)

I'm not sure whether I'll keep watching this show because I already have a lawyer show on my list (The Good Wife), but it was definitely one of the pilots I liked more.

My Generation 1.01: Mockumentary about a high school class of 2000 who were filmed in highschool for a documentary, and the follow up of where they are ten years later. Very :////. It felt like the filmmakers had wished they'd actually done this project for real, but they didn't, so here's a fictionalized version of how it would have been instead, but with a more perfect narrative. But I stopped watching after 10 minutes so maybe it got better :/

Lone Star 1.01: Watched the first 25 minutes because I heard good reviews; would have watched more just to test it out if I were watching alone, but my sister got impatient. IDK, it's probably one of those shows you have to be patient with.

The Office 7.01: The Office! :-)

30 Rock 5.01: Tina Fey, thank you for bringing joy back into my life, for 22 minutes a week. Thank you ♥. LOL, Jenna. "As great as I am at this, I'm not really necessary. The last time I said that I was in a threeway with two of the Backstreet Boys."

Grey's Anatomy 7.01: Oh, no, no no no no no, Cristina Yang, you do not get to break my heart like that. God, I just kept going back to the season three finale, my all time favorite moment on this show; this scene, specifically 4:16 and onwards, gives me chills every time I watch it. Oh, Cristina.

SPN 6.01: spoilers )
