I watched Jupiter Ascending this evening. My responses are as follow:
1. OSCARS. OSCARS FOR EVERYONE.
2. LOLOLOLOLOL.
3. No but seriously that script felt like I was reading it straight from Mibba. I'm not even talking ff.net, poeple. Mibba.
4. The only review I read about the movie beforehand feels to me like the best and only review one needs to read about this movie. It is from The Mary Sue, and titled Jupiter Ascending Is The Worst Movie Ever Go See It Immediately.
5. That said, overall, it was enjoyable. An extended facepalm, but enjoyable.
We went to an early showing, which unfortunately meant that the the mall was open for another hour after the movie was over, which translated into me being 350 shekels down by the end of the evening: one book, and three lipsticks (rather, two lipsticks and a primer. Apparently primers are a thing.) I don't really do make up - I don't know how it works, I don't know how to choose it, and I literally had to ask the lady at the store how to try on the testers because I have never done that before. But I bought a lipstick a couple months ago - strong and red, which I wore to a couple weddings and liked, but nothing I felt comfortable in any way wearing on a day to day basis. But at the mall tonight I stumbled upon a Mac store, and there we go. The two I got are very mild and natural looking and I think I'll like them; it remains to be seen how much I'll use them, but so far I'm satisfied with the purchase. (I got the standard yearly raise last week, so I'm just gonna pretend I spent money in honor of that.) The saleswoman almost convinced me to buy mascara too, but I felt a little too anime-eyes with them, so, as the saying here goes, "cow-cow", or - one step at a time.

Because I mentioned the weather yesterday, here are a few photos I took (on my phone) just to demonstrate:
the ocean starting to creep in on our car in the parking lot
before and after wiping my windshield yesterday morning
and a black car I saw parked in the street today, after yesterday's rain.
Finally, I am sure many of you have seen this as it's been making the internet/tumblr rounds, but good grief, this choreography and dance performance of "Take Me to Church" is utterly breathtaking:
As the ever clickable Buzzfeed article describes it, "so beautiful it hurts".

* Is there anything you want to drink, particularly if it's hot? Okay, drink it before you start.
* Moistrize your lips with something non-oily. Primer's one option, but I like using my usual face lotion for that, or my face primer. (Bobby Brown's vitamin stuff. Best primer ever, and for non-dry skin it's also the only lotion you need.) Let it absorb. Reapply until lips are smooth.
* If you're going to use lip pencil, use it now. This isn't necessary for casual colours, but for anything with lots of pigment and particularly anything darker than your natural shade, it'll help.
* Apply layer 1 of lipstick. If using a dark or dramatic shade, a brush is highly recommended. An angeled eyeliner brush will also work.
* If you applied straight from the tube, remove excess by gently pressing tissue paper between your lips.
* Apply neutral powder. (If you have a silicone-based product, this is where it goes. If you want glitter-powder, this is also where it goes.)
* Apply second layer of lipstick. Do NOT remove excess. Do NOT apply gloss.
* Do not eat or drink anything for 2hr, to let the whole thing set.
Matte > satin> anything glittery, in terms of resilience. This is why I use matte shades and shimmer powder if I want glitter. Mac's lip pencils are great, and their lipsticks are reasonably resilient. However, for everything else? Don't. Smashbox cost the same and basically everything else they make will be better than Mac's. Also they have tainted primers, which are brilliant if your skin has an undertone you don't like or tends to run ruddy. And eyeshadow sets that actually complement and you use all shades which I swear no other company pulls off consistently.
Except mascara. Those, buy from Clinique. They have the biggest selection of brushes, they're the best for sensitive eyes and they actually cost less. If you want something dramatic, try Lancome.
For casual makeup, this is seriously all you need.

I've had two lipsticks basically: one of them is a strong red, long lasting Mac lipstick, the one I mentioned wearing to a couple weddings, and when I say long lasting I mean long - like, it dries 1-2 minutes after you put it on and you can drink and eat the whole evening, it doesn't come off on anything, and it'll still be on the next morning (and you have to kind of scrub it off to get rid of it). So that one's - intense, but not at all inconvenient.
So that's the one. The other newer ones I got are a lot gentler and more natural seeming, and I like the way they look; my lips are kind of chappy, and it gives them a nice color but also makes them look smoother. But yeah, they definitely came off withing like 1-2 hours of me putting them on. I'll try Hagar's technique, I guess, and see if that helps.

The reason the mascara went doll-eyes on you is because Mac have only 1-2 kinds of brushes and only black, and you need brown and probably a different brush type. (Edit: and a differen application technique! The ones artists at stores always implement is designed to do the doll-eyes look. I can show you sometime, it's dead easy.) If you want mascara, hit the Clinique stands. Nude-rose lipstick is cute, but most bang for least work dailywear makeup is brown mascara and gel liner - go to Smashbox's stand (April; other chains don't have 'em) for liner, but buy Mac's angled eyeshadow/liner brush because Mac's brushes are cheaper and just as good.
And if you want makeup-buying company, do let me know. Putting together starter-kits is one of my favorite things.
Edit 2. I'm pretty sure #266 is the brush you want for liner - the fibers appropriate for wet products are lighter in colour and smoother than the ones appropriate for dry products (e.g. #263). Also, I'm willing to bet the brush you need looks about like this - it's the one I use, and my lashes will go doll-eyes at almost anything; I use this in brown, and sparingly. (Unless I want drama. In which case the purple comes out.)

We'll need to talk a bit about what you want (where and when do you intend to wear makeup? How often do you expect to do that? How much do you want to spend?) and how your skin's doing (<-very important), but that's maybe 5-15min and no problem.
If I understand correctly, you want to try doing something relatively simple to work (and if that actually catches, maybe expand the dailywear category), and also have something real nice for going out in the evenings.

And yeah, that's pretty much what I want - like, very casual work, maybe also casual outside of work (which I feel might be different?). I'm kind of self conscious about evening make up but we'll see where that goes.

And yes, day-work and day-going-out can be a little different. It can be using the same eyeshadows differently and pairing them with a different makeup, or it can be a whole different set. For a starter-kit, I usually try to go for a minimum number products; if it turns out you actually like this makeup thing and use it often enough, then we can spend more money and expend your collection.
Oh! Another distinct category is "big meetings at work". If you have meetings were you need to impress clients or bosses or where you would just feel better with "war paint"/shielding we can do that, too. (Usually that would be "upping" the usual work look a bit - adding a contour or swapping a lipstick.)
(Example: one of my toned-down work-setting looks will be two-tone pink eyeshadow, and a nude-rose lipsick. For a dress-to-impress work setting, I'll swap one of the pinks for brown and do three-tone shadow, and use matte raspberry lipstick - same palette, but more sophisticated and attention-catching. Swapping a matte item for a similar-tone but satin [day-appropriate mild glitter] one is another option.)
Another issue is how you want to approach whole-face products (primer, foundation, powder). I'm not recommending those for dailywear. One of those may be nice to have, because those are where the big look-upgrade is. If only one, definitely primer or foundation. For primer, I seriously recommend Bobbi Brown's - it's full-on moisture for non-dry skin and it smells like tangerines, it's awesome. And it gives better effect than even Smashbox's primer, which means it's several grades about Mac's. If you can get this one abroad or at the Duty Free, it might be cheaper.
