this weekend, I:

1. Learned that Harry Styles apparently has a thing with Judaism? DON'T DO THIS TO ME 1D FANDOM. I do not need to be drawn in via this.

2. Read a memoir about hockey which was, hey, at least an actual book instead of just reading fic, so it's almost as if I expanded my horizons.

3. Watched The Sound of Music for the first time in at least 15 years. When I was a kid Christopher Plummer was always old and mean and unattractive and watching the film now my mind was blown at the fact that he is hot and sarcastic and witty, WHO'D HAVE THUNK. He's pretty mean but in a... deliciously cynical way. How is this movie still so enjoyable. Also, I want a Sound of Music AU in pretty much every single fandom I've ever been in, but ugh especially now, I would totally read a Kaner/Tazer futurefic where Tazer was a mean embittered single dad with kids both old and young and Kaner is the hockey player/nanny that --

--shit just realized this already exists in real life in the form of Danny Briere and Claude Giroux carry on.

(I still totally want the Kaner/Tazer version though. Could be minus the age difference I don't mind.)

4. Got no writing or primering done :( :( :(

5. But uh, thought a lot about the fic I want to get done?

6. Slept a lot.

7. Marveled at the new video ad of Patrick Kane stickhandling because jfc:

On that note I'll mention that if you're not a hockey fan and you watch that video, I would love to know if it looks impressive or not. Because to me right now it's like O_____o holy shit but I think perhaps two years ago I'd have looked at it and completely shrugged it off? I am lacking any kind of objectivity here.

...Two more September holidays to go. Hope I'll be more productive then?

I'm not all that impressed, and I know that's precisely because I don't have the experience or background knowledge of the sport you do. When I watched that video, I saw that he made it look easy, and while I have enough awareness to recognize that he's got enough skill to make it seem that way, I don't have enough to see how much effort he put forth to get to that level.

I can't shrug it off, but I can't sit in awe, either. More of a quiet murmur of appreciation for sportsmanship and skills in which I have no inclination or interest beyond a moment's observation.

Yes, growing up I thought Christopher Plummer was kind of old for Maria but now, woof. *fans self*

I don't know a thing about hockey, and I thought this was impressive as fuck.

On the other hand, I'm not exactly a naive observer on matters of dexterity and precision physical skills, or overall body-handling.

I wasn't a gymanst. I have minimal background in ninjitsu and korindo-aikido, and I hang out with martial artists relatively a lot. I also studied piano at a pro level with primarily Soviet-trained teachers. And I'm the alum of quite a bit of physiotherapy, multiple methods.

Which sums down to a high body awareness, martial-artist-level knowledge of kinesthetics, and enough experience to know how much work goes into things.

So in this case, I went !!wtf at the speed and dexterity of handling the stick and the - puck, right? -(because shit that was fast and it's wet and long sticks are clumsy tools for precision-work because basic physics), at the overall body posture (indicating overall strength, body awareness, and body-management on a very minute level; also indicative of some psychological factors) and, lastly, the planning that goes into the legwork.

I'm not a hockey fan, but I am a Canadian? And it totally looks impressive to me.

No hint (I don't even know if they're already in the building--I'm guessing not), but I will let you know!

A "thing"? What kind of thing? Like, he finds Barbara Streisand attractive or he wishes he could grow Orthodox facial hair or what?

He apparently speaks Yiddish, though, and has celebrated Pesach enough to "always feel nervous" when called on to sing, and if this is an "exploration" it's been going on for a few years, which is interesting for a kid so young. But then, I was 19 when I converted so lemme shut up. :D

His judaism thing is so strange! He doesn't seem to BE Jewish but he's really good friends with at least one family in LA that is, and this is the second year he's flown out to celebrate the high holidays with them. He seems to take it really seriously, too. He is a weird dude.

I was pretty impressed by the hockey video. I've only ice skated a couple of times so for me it was kind of impressive that he even managed to keep his blades from touching the pucks. :P

I realize I'm in hockey fandom so I don't count, but I'm pretty sure I would have found it crazy impressive before I was. I mean, even just skating around the pucks like that is impressive, and manipulating a slippery puck at the end of a stick like that? Sheesh.

Actually, if I saw that before I was in hockey fandom, that might have pushed me over the edge.

This doesn't really apply to the video, because he's not also skating very hard, but what impresses me now about hockey in general and Kaner in particular is having that level of precision when also being in an anaerobic state from sprinting. That's freaking amazing.

My lips are sealed. But yes :D

It is like watching puppies! Now that video I think you have to be a hockey fan to appreciate. BUT IT'S SO CUTE!!!! Thank you for finding it!
