Ummm...

From Action Comics #835:

I actually have no idea what the context is. This takes place a few issues before One Year Later, and I only read it to have some background before reading those, skimming for the interesting bits, and then... well, this was interesting.

So: who are these people? What do they have to do with Jimmy Olsen? What is up?

Bonus: Apparently, according to Wikipedia, the DC "Guardians of the Universe" were modeled after David Ben Gurion, which does not fail to crack me up. I don't know it it's true, but come on, it's totally true:

If I'm not mistaken they are Jimmy's relatives, but i don't recall from which side or what the exact relation is.

Also, c'mon, comics are filled with Jewish allusions, it's just a matter of time when they put in actual textual Jewish ceremony and not just characters.

Superman was created by Jerry Seigal and Joel Shuster, Batman was created by Bob Kane (nee Kahn) and Stan Lee created a bunch of Marvel characters.

We rock ;P

[identity profile] roga.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
The guy kinda looks like my grandfather, except with a kippah.

I don't know, I spot them here and there, but hardly as outright as this. I just love (or am freaked by? not sure yet) the image of Superman wearing a kippah.

And yeah, I knew about the creators - even though Kahn isn't necessarily a Jewish surname, but I'll trust you - but that has no bearing on the content of the comics themselves. (I'm guessing it was a good couple of decades at least until they started having said allusions...)

I love the ending, when she isn't satisfied with his Superman's appetite. Sounds about right :-)

ETA: Also, I just noticed that they got him GRAPE JUICE INSTEAD OF WINE. Oh my god, Superman.

[identity profile] a2zmom.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Supes, it wouldn't have killed you to have the wine.

So, Jimmy has some Jewish family? Who'd a thunk it.

[identity profile] roga.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The little people are an inspiration for him, and he drinks grape juice. He really is the world's biggest boy scout.

Also, hee, I love "should I offer to take off his cape?", which I just noticed. I think the first time I read it I only kind of stared at all the kippahs, and I'm only now getting all the jokes.

[identity profile] a2zmom.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Many people don't like Clark because of the whole boyscout rep, but I think he's secretly worried all the time that he could so easily take over the world. Plus the fact that he's totally whipped by Lois will always endear him to me.

[identity profile] roga.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, totally. And she's all, "I'll buy you lunch later, Kent." It's adorable.

[identity profile] a2zmom.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It just proves that unlike Bats, he really is Clark Kent, Kansas farmboy and the Superman thing is just a job. Because if all you knew was Superman, would you guess that in reality he's a sub personality? That's the real reason no one figures out the Kent/Superman thing.

I mean, I love Batman, but the Bats is a nutjob, no doubt about it.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
That's why I love Batman. I always love the crazy Dom ones. Supes just bores the FUCK out of me. Although if he hung out with Bubbe more often, I'd probably read more Superman comics. ;)

[identity profile] a2zmom.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I find it strangely hot that Lois orders Clark around. I don't know what that says about me. **g**

Actually, though, my favorite by a wide margin is Nightwing, the Former Boy Wonder himself, Dick Greyson. How he managed to stay so normal while being raised by Bruce is beyond me. Of course the fact that he looks really good half naked and chained up does nothing to hurt his appeal.

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, I like it when tiny women Top too.

Nightwing is nghhhhhhh. Awesome. Esp. Nightwing/Dark Knight slash. HOMG..

[identity profile] a2zmom.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I can't get into Nightwing/Batman slash for the most part. For me, they have such a fascinating (and screwed up) father/son vibe, that I don't want to see it sullied, so to speak.

That said, one of my favorite Nightwing stories is one where there is a nuclear bonb threat in NYC and the teen titans respond. Dick being Dick, he tows it out into space because he doesn't want any of the other team members to be in that kind of danger and the thing blows up.

Bruce being Bruce, he reassembles Dick's molecules but it doesn't quite work. Because Dick is now dickless. The story is currently something like 80 chapters long and isn't even close to finished. I'm not sure it ever will be. Anyway, what I love about it is it's a very realistic look at what would happen if you had an unwanted sex change operation, from having to relearn how to go to the bathroom, to dealing with the fact that you're a foot shorter and have a different center of gravity. Bruce is, of course, totally thrown, because all of a sudden his "son" is a hot 23 year old girl and Dick does't understand why Bruce is behaving so weirdly.
And that was a total ramble.

...pretty much that you are awesome. I love that no matter how much Clark idolizes Lois and is willing to move heaven and earth for her, beyond all reason, in a totally excessive and obsessive way that has led to some level of destruction - even then, she's never (well, from the little I've read) a pristine woman-to-be-rescued that he keeps on a pedestal. She's still Lois, who... bosses him around and buys him lunch and is a much better reporter than him.

my favorite by a wide margin is Nightwing

Ditto. And it really, really sucks that i've finally started reading issues from the past two years and the characterization is weird and the art is butt-ugly. It really makes me cringe.

[identity profile] a2zmom.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard that the current Nightwing writer/artist is good, but I've been so disappointed the last few years that I stopped reading.

If you're interested, I can hook you up with some great fic. For whatever reason, I don't have any interest in comic slash for the most part. I tend to prefer stories that have action along with great character interaction. (Although my favorite Nightwing story may be heading toward slash, sort of, assuming the author ever finishes.)

[identity profile] roga.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yes recs yes, please. I've probably gone over everything Nightwing on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van and another rec list or two, but I am always happy for more, especially since this is one of those fandoms where not everything is concentrated on LJ.

[identity profile] schemingreader.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the line at the end, where the balabusteh complains that Superman has no appetite to speak of! Excellent.

[identity profile] roga.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That cracked me up :-) Come on, Supes, finish your tzimmes.

From what I'm finding, Josef Schuman was a character introduced by Gail Simone in Action #831, as a reporter for the Daily Planet. His connection to Jimmy seems to stem from concern that Jimmy's associations with Superman lead him to take risks that endanger his life.

[identity profile] roga.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah! That clears things up. And I am only a tiny bit disappointed that there is no family connection between them... I'm satisfied enough with having Tim Drake as my token DC-maybe-half-Jew.

eat, eat, Supes, bubuleh, you didn't make much of a dent in your chicken zoop!

I once saw Art Spiegelman (writer of Maus) lecture on the contribution of Jewish immigrant culture to the history of comics. He pointed out Superman's "real" name -- Kal-El... voice of God?

Supe is also a dark-haired immigrant, if you will, with a secret history, who adopts a meek persona to fit in (a bespecled writer -- how Jewish is that?), which alternates with every meek, immigrant Jew's fantasy identity: the powerful hero.

[identity profile] roga.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
The 'El' suffixes were always weird to me, because growing up I'd thought they were unintentional, until one day I realized that wait, they really were hinting at the Kryptonians' godlike status. I always thought it was less 'voice' (kol), and more kal as in light (the opposite of heavy, not of dark) and easy.

I remember reading that the Clark Kent character was partially inspired by Harold Lloyd, which really made sense to me, since the first time I ever saw Lloyd I thought "whoa, Clark Kent".

I really need to read The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, to get a sense of the beginning of the comics industry, be it fictional or not. It's fascinating.

This is SO AWESOME. That whole sequence puts a smile on my face.

But I think the real question is, how the heck does Supes know about Shabbat in the first place?!

how the heck does Supes know about Shabbat in the first place?!

I know! I mean, he's Superman, so obviously he knows everything about everything, but I can't help but wonder where that comfortable "I'm familiar with kiddush" came from.

I'm surprised she didn't send him home with a bag, "for later, when you need a snack."

Hee!

[identity profile] roga.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I just read a Batman issue where Alfred pretty much says those exact words to Robin, giving him a doggie bag. Alfred - the Bat-Bubbe?
shalom: (Default)

[personal profile] shalom 2008-09-11 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
That's great! Only I never heard Alfred sighing and laying guilt on anyone that no one notices how well he takes care of them. :)

[identity profile] roga.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
True. If he ever did, I'm sure Bruce would be a heartbeat away from committing him to Arkham, or at the very least check him for alien mind-control.

[identity profile] eglow23.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so, this is just how my mind works, but this reminds me of the scene in Borat when he accidentally stays at a B&B run by a Jewish couple. Which is crazy, because that scene was horribly offensive (and hysterical) and here Superman is polite and all...but yeah.

Haha, this is adorable. Those are totally my grandparents, too.

[identity profile] roga.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen Borat. Yet? I know that if I do I'll enjoy some of the humor and cringe horribly at the rest.

And I mean, GRAPE JUICE. That's what the kids drink at the seder! Okay, so I still drink it to this day, but. I love how he they all feel he shouldn't set a bad example by drinking wine in front of the... old Jewish couple who want to do kiddush :-)
